Chapter Five
"Um, America?" I hear rather deep voice say through my sleep. Lightly groan and turn in my bed so that I'm facing the other way.
"America?"
I groan again. I really don't want to wake up.
"America."
I cover my head with the rather thin blanket that I've been sleeping under.
"America!"
"Can't you take a hint?!" I snap, fully awake as I sit up in what appears to be a cot. I feel a groan in the back of my throat when I realize that what happened wasn't a dream. Just my luck.
"Well sorry!" The voice says sarcastically as it moving closer to me. I look up and I see a boy. He's rather tall for his age, which I guess is the same as mine. Similarly to the rest of his group, he is pretty fit, except more in a soldier kind of way. He has dark hair and surprisingly tan skin, although that just might be because the only light we're getting in here is from the tiny cracks in the hut walls and the door that he had left open.
"Was I disturbing your sleep?" He says again sarcastically as he takes a sit at my feet
I scoff. Wow, we just meet and he already is treating me horribly. Well I guess I've faced worse people. (Even though she didn't really mean it.)
"Yea. Actual you did." I snap back. I'm really not in the mood to talk to this guy right now. "Oh, and you took me from my family. So there's that."
I hear the guy angrily sigh before turning his head to me. "Well, I was just told to get you up."
"Fine. I'm up."
"And to tell you that breakfast is ready. And that you better hurry before 'someone' eats all of it." He seems to chuckle when he says someone. Must be one of his friends.
"Oh..." I say feeling more comfortable and less cranky. "Th.thanks."
"Uhuh." He says before standing up and head towards the door.
"Your clothes are on the chair over there." He says nodding his head toward the chair in the corner. "Just in case you're wondering."
"Thanks." I say as he closes the doors. I then sigh as I put on the outfit that is slightly to big for me.
-----------------------
"Well look who's up?" Is the first thing I hear when I enter what I'm guessing is the dinning tent. I look at the head table and I see Solomon looking at me with a smile.
"Sorry. I'm just not used to getting woken up by screaming." I say hoping that the boy who woke me would hear.
Solomon chuckles and nods at my response. "It's fine."
He seems surprisingly cool today. Opposed to yesterday when I felt like he would try to kill me.
"Oh. Um, you can sit next to David." Solomon says nodding to the table on the far left of the tent. I just sigh and walk over to the table.
"Well hello, princess." I hear the familiar voice say when u get there. I see the boy who woke me up in the middle of the table, and grin on his face. As I suspected I'm the only girl in this whole camp, so of course I'd be stuck sitting at a table of just guys.
"Well hello, Jackass." I say back. I grin when all of his friends start to laugh that he got stood up by a girl. I then secretly looking around for an empty seat. And of course with my luck, the only empty seat at the table is next to him.
"Whatever. Are you going to eat or not?"
"Wow. Dave your starting to sound your dad!" One of his friends tease.
I sigh and start to make my way towards the guy, who I now realize is David.
I try to zone the two 'arguing' guys as I start to make plate of food. I have to say it looks pretty good considering that we're rebels. Eggs, sausage, and a potato dish that a little boy named Alex tells me is called Hash Browns. Apparently his favorite dish.
"So... You were Shalom's daughter?" Alex asks.
I just nod. I still can't talk about my dad or his death.
"You know he told us about you."
"Really?" I say taking a rather big bite of hash browns.
"Yea. He told us that you were in the selection. And that it was mostly your mother's fault that you were."
"Yea, well I can't blame her. Not now at least."
"Where you nervous about it?" Alex asks taking a sip of water with an interested look on his face.
"Yea. I was. But at first it was just because I wanted to be able to help my family..." I then start to think of the real reason why I went along with it in the first place. And why I was here now, instead with Maxon. "...and because of my secret ex-boyfriend."
"What happened?" He asks again very interested. I can tell now by his voice that he was 8. Which sort of explains the interest in my life.
"Well um. We broke up. And I went into the selection to get away from him." I admit, not really realizing that I'm the only one at the table talking.
"Then what happened?"
"Um. Well I met Prince Maxon. We became friends. We started to fall for each other. And we were almost going to get married but then um. He choose Kriss over me." I say trying my best not to choke on the last part.
"Aww, why?" Alex asks taking a bite of eggs.
"Um. I. Uh. Um..." I start to mutter nervously. I can't tell him. I can't tell anyone about Aspen and about why I wasn't chosen. "I..."
"Alex, leave the girl alone and finish your food!" David surprisingly interrupts. Thank you!
"But..." Alex objects but when David gives him a look he does what he says and hushes up and eats.
"Thanks." I whisper to David who just nods and continues to eat before turning back to his conversation.
