Chapter 12- Trepidation

I found Jemma, dead cold on the floor yet miraculously still breathing and fighting for her life. Laiechen's hysterical screams automatically summoned three nurses. One coincidently being the one who delivered the note to me.

A tall girl with dark skin, flashy green eyes and tasseled dark brown hair composedly tended to Jemma while the young nurse with brown hair and blue eyes proceeded to calm Laiechen down.

"Helmine honey, it's ok..." The nurse repetitively whispered while Laiechen wept in disbelief.

"Grandmama no! Not you too... not you too..." Laiechen mourned panickedly.

I was disoriented. Completely scarred by the occurring turn of events. What just happened?

The tall nurse ordered two other nurses to fetch a doctor and then ordered another to get a stretch.

Within almost no time at all, all three nurses returned. They tended to Jemma and sent Laiechen elsewhere.

"Is Helmine's panic attack normal?" I asked the nurses out of curiosity. The blue-eyed nurse muttered a yes while reaching down to pick the weeping Laiechen off the floor.

"She has been dealing with a severe case of thantophobia since she was three." The other nurse informed me.

The nurse placed me and Laiechen to a nearby room, telling me to keep watch while the doctor came to check up on her.

I immediately got nervous upon looking at her. Her eyes were brimming with tears and falling down her delicate cheeks yet she said nothing.

I felt compelled to ask if she was okay but judging by the way she turned her face from my sight and curled herself in the bed, I figured it best to leave her be.

A few minutes later, someone came in the room. I knew it was Dr. Varren when I saw the icy blue eyes and raven hair.

"Dr. Varren?"

She smiled when I recognized her.

"Ah Phiysilya, I didn't expect for us to meet again so soon. How are you holding up?" Dr. Varren replied, giving a somewhat unsettling yet motherly smile to me. I didn't like the uncharacteristic warmth in them. If anything, it made me suspicious.

"Why thanks, I'm doing great..." I shyly lied.

She smiled again at my response.

"Good, I'll talk to Laiechen again in the morning. For now, you should get some rest."

Dr. Varren thankfully dismissed herself shortly after checking on Laiechen, whom dozed off shortly afterward. I figured she tired herself by all the screaming.

I looked at her sleeping face. It was so serene and peaceful, a stark contrast to her panic-stricken face.

But I couldn't sleep. Whether it had to do with my worries concerning the New Burtiontions or Dr. Varren, I didn't know. But I did know that I couldn't trust Dr. Varren. I had to see for myself what she was going to do with Jemma.

So I crept out the bed, being careful not to awaken Laiechen. It was bad enough that I was doing something out of my comfort zone. Roaming the halls of the sanatorium at night.

I took the kerosene lamp from the nightstand and held it by the handle. I turned the doorknob, trying to open the door as quietly as possible.

As soon as I looked out the long hallway, my pulse started to quicken, my hands started to tremble. If I thought the hallways during the day were scary then night time was worse.

Besides from the screams of children and babies, everything was silent. Just like I expected.

The black and white tilted floors were soundless against my tiptoes. I have been around here enough times to have at least some recollection of where to go.

Before long, I came across the labs. In one of the labs, I smelled something horrible. Bad enough where I didn't dare to go in. I took a peek from the door only to see bottles and bottles of not medicine but something else...

Colorless to macaroon yellow liquids, chartreuse colored liquids, and odorless liquids. Not only that but I was also able to spot different types of leaves that didn't look right.

What the hell is this stuff?

I knew it couldn't be anything good because it smelled downright disgusting. I even felt tears start to cloud my eyes and I had to cover my nose with my other hand because it was so bad.

Quickly, I dashed right back to the room Laiechen was sleeping in and locked the door for extra measure.

I couldn't believe it.

I wasn't sure what all those bottles of liquids were but I was smart enough to know it wasn't medicine or anything beneficial of the sort. I looked down at Laiechen's sleeping face, knowing it probably wasn't the wisest decision to tell her.

So I laid in bed as far away from Laiechen as I could, looking up at the big white ceiling shortly before slowly dozing off.
