Chapter 6.4

The Priest of Andlenore chanted The White God's name as he saw the action unfold below, from the second storey of the Town Centre. The townsfolk who chose to stay away from the fight had gathered there. Though they did have surplus supplies of arrows and bows, whatever good they did.

The Priest saw twenty men come up to the Town Centre. They rattled the gate and called for the people within to open it.

Gods! Wilbur Glidron was right! They aren't expecting any fight at all. Rhugh only sent twenty. That and pride.

The men backed away, whispering among themselves. One of them came forward and others made way for him. He had an axe. He swung high and wide. The axe made the gate rattle as it met the lock.

A volley of arrows followed the strike. About thirty arrows didn't meet their target. Four did. The man with the axe was one of them. The soldiers were ready for a second volley with shields up. Another soldier picked up the axe and his fellow companion covered him with a shield to intercept arrows. The random arrows kept on shooting. But the soldiers were alert.

And well trained. Had they not underestimated us not even the four arrows would have met.

It took seven more swings to break the lock. The gate was kicked open after the last swing as the soldiers rushed in crouching, shields over their heads. The arrows stopped.

Two of The White Capes jumped at them from their hiding spots behind the wall. The Priest noted three casualties for the enemy as their shields were raised above their heads.

The White Capes were subdued soon as well.

Soon they were at the door of the town centre. This made them get out of the range of the arrows. No arrows would go so close to the door from the higher windows. They were about to do their axe drill again when clanking was heard in the distance.

The Priest gasped, watching Rhugh came towards them in full battle armour. He had eight men coming up behind him. His lips started quivering, hands shaking.

Wilbur lost?

His eyes widened as he saw the blood on the green and red armour. The armour barely had any scratches except a hole in the chest.

The White Capes lost?

The Priest tried to pray. But the words became wind as a lump formed in his throat.

The townsfolk around him seemed to be stunned as well.

Is this it?

The fourteen men gave way to Rhugh as he came up towards the gate. The eight men surrounded the fourteen forming a protective circle. The fourteen men looked at Rhugh as he placed his hand on the lock.

The vibrating would echo soon through his alchemy.

Silence greeted them. In the next instance Rhugh had unsheathed his sword and killed four men around him, in one single smooth stroke. He left his sword which glowed white as it levitated in the air. It floated to stab another man through his heart. The same time was used by Rhugh to kill another on his left with a knife.

Gladinstone. The Priest had heard about how Gladinstone was a metal that reacted to it's owner's will. This was the first time he had seen it in action. It wasn't just a good sight. It was a miracle.

This isn't Rhugh at all.

The rest of Rhugh's men were killed by his body guards, stabbed from the back.

The Priest half cried half laughed, as Wilbur revealed himself by removing his helmet. A silent wave of relief passed through the townsfolk at the revelation. The glowing sword floated back to Wilbur's right hand.

He waved his blade in the air. He put on his helmet again as he left the Town Centre with his eight men.

They scattered through the town of Andlenore.
