Tina glanced at Newt as they stepped into the principal's office for the third time that month. He looked tired and stressed. Turning back towards the room, she spotted the top of their son's head poking above the back of a chair. The principal closed the door behind them before sitting behind his desk. Newt and Tina sat down on either side of their son.
"Thank you for coming," Mr. Williams, the principal, started. "I'll admit that I was surprised that I had to call you. Your son has only been here for a little over a month but he always seemed to be such a quiet, well-behaved boy."
Tina suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. He had said more or less the same thing the week before.
"What happened, exactly?" Newt asked.
Mr. Williams frowned slightly. "Nicholas was caught chea--"
"I wasn't cheating!" Nick exclaimed, jumping to his feet. "Miss Harte just said I was. She knew that Paul was the one cheating, but she blamed me because I'm different and she doesn't like that."
Tina rested her hand on his shoulder and gently pushed him back into his chair.
"You can't have called us here just to tell us that Nicholas cheated," she said. "What else happened?" The question was really meant for her son, but Mr. Williams didn't know that.
"Miss Harte claims he punched her in the mouth."
Tina ignored him. She doubted Nick would ever hit a teacher.
"I didn't. She just said I did because she doesn't understand what actually happened."
"And what was that?" Newt asked.
The boy looked embarrassed. "Maybe you should just see for yourself. You'll have to fix it anyway."
Tina nodded Turning to Mr. Williams she said, "Could we please see Miss Harte?"
Mr. Williams nodded and left the room. Tina sighed and ran her fingers through her son's dark, messy hair, trying in vain to smooth it down.
"Nick, this is the third incident and it's still only the first month of school."
"Second month," he muttered, "and I'm not doing it on purpose. I can't help that I'm different."
"It's okay to be different," Newt said. "You're very special, even by wizarding standards."
Nick sank lower into his chair. "I know."
Tina opened her mouth to ask what had caused the accident but Nick answered before she could speak.
"We were taking a test and Paul was trying to read my answers. Miss Harte knew he was cheating but she didn't care. I tried to cover my paper but he's taller than me. He kept looking at my paper. Miss Harte happened to look at me just as I turned slightly in Paul's direction. She said I was cheating but she knew I wasn't. If I was going to cheat, I wouldn't have to look at anyone's paper. (And no, I wasn't cheating.) It's not fair. She always treats me differently because she knows something's different about me, even though she doesn't know what."
Just then, the door opened and Mr. Williams came in. He was followed by Miss Harte who was covering her mouth with one hand. Tina stood to meet them.
"Let's see what the damage is," she said. "Please lower your hand."
"I don't know what Nicholath did but I know he'th the one who did it," she said without lowering her hand. She had an obvious lisp.
"We know who did it," Newt said. "What we need to know is what he did."
"Please lower your hand," Tina repeated.
Miss Harte slowly obeyed and Tina nearly choked on a laugh. The woman's front teeth were twice as big as they should have been and all her teeth were bright green.
"Thee what he did to me? How ith anyone thupothed to fix thith?"
"Very easily," Tina sighed. "Close your eyes."
Miss Harte looked at her suspiciously before slowly closing her eyes. Tina pulled out her wand and silently cast a spell. The woman's teeth turned white and her front teeth shrunk to a normal size. Then she obliviated her as Newt did the same to Mr. Williams.
When they got home, Nick took a seat at the dining room table and began his homework. Tina grabbed her husband by the arm and pulled him upstairs so they could talk where there was less chance of their son overhearing them.
"Newt, we can't keep sending him to that school. He's only been going to it for a little over a month and he's already had three incidents."
"I know, but we can't just move him. He already goes to a different school every year, we can't send him to a different school every month."
"Well, there are two options. The first option is homeschooling him."
"No," Newt said quickly. "We tried that once and it didn't work. You didn't have time because of work and I was no good at teaching him. Besides, the only reason for sending him to school is to give him something to do. He already knows everything before we tell him."
Tina smiled. "I know. That's why I have a second option. Remember what Mark Whitman suggested?"
"What, that school on the other side of New York?" Newt asked.
"Yes," Tina nodded. "Maybe we should send Nick there. There are a few other magical kids who go there and he'll be able to make some friends before he goes to Ilvermorny. Most importantly, one of the teachers is a witch so we won't have to worry about dealing with any of the incidents."
Newt frowned. "But it's so far away."
"It's only the other side of the city. I'll still be able to take him there on my way to work and you'll still be able to pick him up in the afternoon, just like we do now."
"I suppose." Newt still didn't look convinced.
"Would you rather homeschool him?" Tina grinned.
Newt shook his head. "Maybe we should ask Mark to help us get him into the school."
"Alright. I'll write to him in the morning."
They made their way downstairs and called their son. Nick appeared in the living room and sank into an armchair. Newt and Tina sat on the couch to his right.
"I'm changing schools again," he said.
"Yes," Tina replied. "It's a school on the other side of New York where there are a few other kids like you and . . ." She trailed off. "You already know why we're choosing to send you there, don't you?"
The dark-haired boy nodded.
"I don't need to explain any of it, do I?" she asked.
Nick shook his head. His messy hair fell into his eyes. He got up and came over to sit between his parents.
"I won't really be with people like me," he pointed out.
Tina smiled and pushed his hair out of his brown eyes. "I know. You and your aunt have a very special ability that most witches and wizards don't learn till they're much older. Even then, it's not something that's commonly taught." She hugged him tight; Newt hugged both of them.
They stayed like this for a little over a minute before Nick spoke.
"If I'm changing schools, do I need to finish my homework?"
Before Tina could open her mouth to tell him he should finish his homework, he had wriggled out of her grasp giggling, "Daddy says I don't have to."
"No, I don't," Newt laughed as he made a grab for his son. Nick jumped out of the way. "I don't see why you need to finish your homework because I don't see why you need to go back to that school, but it's your mother's decision."
"Well, I suppose it won't hurt for you to miss one or two days of school," Tina said but she knew Nick wasn't listening. He had started skipping in circles around the coffee table the moment she had made her decision.
Both Newt and Tina reached out and caught their son on his way past. They pinned him to the couch between them and started tickling him. He squirmed and giggled as he tried to push their hands away. Eventually, he rolled off the couch and landed on the floor where he sat, gasping for air.
"That," he said between gasps, "wasn't fair."
"Yes, it was," Newt said, pulling the boy off of the ground. "You knew it was coming."
"Not really."
Newt chuckled and pulled Nick into his lap. Tina slid over to sit beside them. She pressed kisses to their freckled cheeks as Newt slipped an arm around her shoulders.
"I love you too," Nick murmured.
A/N: I wrote most of the second half of this story in Chemistry class. I worked a little during Math and finished it at the beginning of English.
I liked this story. If you did then don't forget to vote and comment. Feel free to leave suggestions for other stories.
Edit Note: Anyone who's curious to know what I think Nicholas looks like, just picture young Newt with black hair.
