Chapter 35, Xander

I'd spent over an hour driving to Manhattan all the while avoiding traffic cameras as much as possible. You could never be too careful when it came to the Legion.

Before Izzie would just hack the cameras and loop the feed but with her gone, we only had one hacker and he was drowning in work Izzie could have finished in a few hours.

Finally, I made it to the Hideout and gave my keys to the valet. I'd have to change the license plates when I got it back but I doubted anyone would take it.

I walked up to the front door and was about to get in line when I realized how stupid that was; I was probably on the list or something like that.

Avoiding looking at the people in line I walked up to the bouncer. He didn't have a list, and he definitely wasn't wearing a hat.

What if it's a trap? What if it isn't?

"Ummmmm I like your hat," I said.

He gave me a funny look but after a minute he let me in. I walked into the crowded bar and instantly recognized at least ten people on the Order's 'kill list'.

Of course, I was probably on their kill lists too.

I kept walking but stopped as I saw a large man grab a waitress's wrist. She flinched but didn't try to pull away. Then the man laughed and twisted her wrist at an angle it was clearly not meant to twist to.

She cried out in pain and I started moving towards her to help. To my surprise, she pulled a pill bottle out of her pocket, swallowed a pill, and started trying to clear a table.

I got to the girl and tapped her on the shoulder. She flinched I instantly regretted my decision. Her nametag read 'Jenny'.

"Sorry sir, can I help you?" Jenny smiled as if her wrist weren't hanging sideways.

"You need someone to set your arm."

"It's fine, really. I'll go to the hospital after my shift."

"I'm sure your boss will understand you leaving early."

"Well, you've clearly never met my boss. Now is there anything I can help you with sir?" Her voice was surprisingly firm.

"Yes, is the Devil here yet?"

"She's in the backroom, is she expecting you?"

"Unless I got the time wrong she is."

Jenny smiled and started walking towards the back of the building. I followed, and suddenly Kate was there.

She was absolutely stunning in a floor-length black dress with a slit up her leg. She was wearing makeup that made her beautiful eyes even brighter. And she was looking right past me.

"Who broke your wrist?"

I was confused for a second. Then I remembered Jenny. I was surprised Kate would care.

"My wrist? Umm, I crushed it in a door. It's fine I took some Paingone." Jenny was a decent liar.

"The angle's wrong for being crushed in a door. Now tell me who broke your wrist."

"I really don't want to cause trouble ma'am, it's fine."

"No it isn't, now tell me who broke your wrist. Everything will be ok I promise."

Kate had a kind look on her face that I'd never have imagined she could make. Her smile was warm rather than smug and her eyes weren't nearly as cold as usual. It was beautifully unlike her.

Jenny pointed to the man who'd broken her wrist. I wondered if Kate would kick him out. She did own the bar after all.

"His name's Daniel Waters, he's a big stockbroker. Please just leave it be, he's a powerful guy."

Then I realized why Jenny had tried to hide the broken wrist. Daniel Waters was a billionaire, and a known ally of the Legion. Kate probably wouldn't do anything to anger him.

"I can guarantee I'm more powerful. Has he done anything like this before?"

"We all know to avoid him at this point. It's my fault for making eye contact."

Then to my surprise, Kate pulled a vial of MC-57 out of her purse and handed it to me. The kind look on her face was replaced with one of anger.

"Fix her wrist, and don't let her see what I'm about to do." She walked off.

I filled the syringe and found a vein in Jenny's arm. But as I gave her the medicine Kate pulled a knife out of nowhere and stabbed Waters in the throat. I winced but Jenny just smiled.

"You let her watch?" Kate asked clearly noticing the look on Jenny's face.

"I couldn't stop her, and I didn't think you were gonna kill the guy right here."

"I've worked here for over a year, I've seen murder before," Jenny added.

"Well, at least he won't be bothering you anymore." Kate addressed Jenny, "Tell the manager we have a code 11 and to call me tomorrow at 3 pm. Then take the rest of the night off."

"Yes ma'am, thank you, ma'am." Jenny grinned.

Kate did a 180 on the toe of her ridiculously high shoe.

"Give me one good reason why I'd team up with you to stop Gold."

I was taken aback, she'd just murdered someone in a crowded bar full of witnesses. And over what most would dismiss with an "it is what it is".

"Why did you just kill a guy in your own bar?"

"He broke my waitresses wrist. Now, why should I team up with you?"

"I know what he did, why do you care?"

"Because I hate men like him, men who treat women like shit." I saw a flash pain in her eyes, "Now for the last time, what possible reason do I have to let you help me?"

"Because Richard Gold still thinks I'm on his side, that has to be useful to you," I said, hoping she wouldn't notice that I'd been betrayed.

"You were on his side then?" she said, seeing right through me.

"I would never. Some of my friends had other ideas though."

"This is why I don't have friends, if a subordinate betrays you, you kill them and move on. I'm guessing you didn't even kick them out."

I was surprised by her sudden coldness. I suppose it was too much to hope she was secretly good.

"They're my friends. Now do you want to make the alliance or not?" I snapped. I didn't like this side of her.

"If Gold really thinks you're on his side then we can call a temporary ceasefire. We can communicate via x-com and I'll tell you the plan as soon as I decide on one."

"Do I get a say in this plan."

"Of course not."

Of course.

"Either I get a say or I'm out." I wouldn't let her take control, "And I don't think you want to give up a man on the inside. Especially since Gold killed all of your spies last month."

Izzie had managed to hack the Gold Order x-com messages that week and we'd seen Gold gloating about finding three girls from the Legion who'd been spying on him.

"Fine, you can make suggestions." She conceded.

"Deal." I decided.

She reached out to shake my hand and it was like unbelievably cheesy sparks flew. She looked so beautiful. And we were wonderfully alone

Our second kiss was just as perfect as the first.

Then I realized I'd kissed Death's daughter twice.

Shit.

"We're meeting in person now, no x-com," she said.

"As soon as possible." I agreed.

And I really wanted to see her as soon as possible.

Hey Gus! What do you think of Kate act of kindness? Can murder really be an act of kindness? What will happen next now that Kate and Xander have had their second kiss? Please vote and comment I want to know what you think!
