Mo' melanin mo' problems
"Seriously?"
I yelled out. Rohan had managed to drive over an erratic boulder of some sort and get us a flat tire...15 minutes away from our destination.
It was 5:00 but darkness had already begun to descend upon us. We had no way to get to the lodge. The only positive thing was that Rohan refused to drive on highways so our car had gotten stuck in some small town road as opposed to the middle of the freeway. I had absolutely no idea what we were going to do. The only thing that I could think of was to push the car away from the main road and into the trees in the side.
I yelled out my plan to the guys and they groaned but obliged. We pushed as hard as we could but the pick up truck remained in its place.I almost wanted to pull my hair out but I knew I had to stay calm. After taking a couple deep breaths I began to speak but then realized I had nothing to say. It was Derek who broke the silence,
"Let's walk into town and see if we can get a spare tire and a bite to eat."
With no other suggestions, Rohan and I agreed. We used our phone flashlights and walked on the side of the road ,slowly in search of civilization. In total one car passed us until we reached what seemed to be the main (and only) plaza in the town. There was a gas station to its side that we entered. A wiry old man was the only inhabitant of the store and he looked surprised to see actual costumers.
The store was shockingly clean and I was about to give props to the owner until he spoke,
"Git out we don't serve ni**as here."
I almost kicked the man, and it would've hurt too since I was wearing my Timberlands but Rohan stopped me. He stepped up in front of Derek and me and said,
"Excuse me sir, please don't be ignorant. I am Indian, Mel here is Hispanic, and Derek is half African American and half white. You just used a very derogatory and untrue term for us that we could report to the police." The man looked rightfully scared as Rohan continued,
"We need a spare tire for a Ford pick up truck. Do you have that for us? If not we will leave right this moment." The man nodded his head rapidly.
He went and got it for us and we payed him in cash and coins. I smirked at the sight of him counting out the change, thinking about how it served him right.
We exited the gas station with the newfound tire and went to the plaza to look for some place to eat as our walk had left our stomachs grumbling. A dingy 60's themed diner seemed to be our only option and we walked in. There was a pretty waitress in roller skates whose face brightened up at the sight of customers. Her smile disappeared however when her manager came in front of us and said that the diner could only do take out. The waitresses face scrunched up in confusion and I realized that the manager did not want us inside since we were not white. We did not have any other options however so we ordered our food and waited.
The food was ready 15 minutes later and handed to us in brown paper bags by the waitress who apologized to us for her managers behavior. I gave her a small smile and payed for the meal. We silently trudged back to Rohan's truck with our food in our hands and our tire in tow. Once we reached the car we climbed into the open cargo area in the back of the truck and huddled together for warmth from the frosty November air.
Finally, we opened our food and started eating. No one said anything, the day's turn of events had left us all weary and irritable. I felt as if there was a cloud of gloom above our heads so I spoke,
"This town must be funded by the Klan or something! Am I right?"
Neither of the boys responded to me although Rohan managed a halfhearted grin. Derek on the other hand angrily continued chewing his tuna melt.
"Hey."
I put my hand on Derek's. I was a little worried.
"Let's play 20 questions."
I said to try to break the tension.
"I'll start." "What's your favorite color and why?"
I asked the guys. Rohan responded first.
"Grey because it makes me feel calm."
I nudged Derek to speak.
"I don't have one."
"Okay, what about least favorite?" I prodded.
"Maroon since it was the color of the sweater my mother wore the day she left us."
I stayed silent. I had nothing to say.
