Chapter 22:
PEETA
When Katniss and I arrived in our room in the train, she stood in awe. The daze look in her eyes fled and she turned in a circle looking around, she looked at me.
"Peeta, how much did you pay for this?" She asked, I smiled slightly.
"You don't need to worry about that, Love. Just make sure it's worth it. Are you going to test out the bed or will we go find food first?" Her eyes lit up at the word food. It amazed me how much better she seemed from just yesterday morning. She seemed so much more herself and I couldn't be more glad.
"Let's go get that food," She said.
I nodded and held out my hand to her. She took it and together we walked out of the room. I swung our knotted hands as we walked through the train. Katniss looked at me, asking with her eyes what I was doing. I smiled at her as she just shook her head and smiled slightly. When we arrived at the dining cart I got us a table and sat down with Katniss. I held her hand over the table, she smiled slightly as I rubbed my thumb over her knuckles.
"Peeta, this train is amazing! Are you sure it's a train and not just some fancy hotel?" Katniss told me jokingly. I smiled at her.
"I'm pretty sure it's a train. Just look out the window," I said gesturing to the window beside our table, "You can't even focus on a tree before it's out of sight," I said. She nodded thoughtfully.
"It's amazing how they've made all these mechanisms and technology. It must be so complex," She said, no necessarily sounding like herself.
"It truly is, just like you. Your amazing Kat, you go through so much and you're still able to smile and joke. It must be the babies inside of you. My joking self that I gave them is rubbing off on you, isn't it?' I told her. She rolled her eyes and smiled.
"Yes, Peeta. That's it, go on and keep telling yourself that," She replied with a smirk.
"I will, don't worry," I replied. She shook her head at me, I pulled her hands up to my lips and kissed her knuckles gently.
"Thank you, Peeta," Katniss said out of the blue, interrupting our peaceful silence.
"For what?" I questioned her. She sighed heavily.
"For everything, but especially for distracting me right now. I really needed this. To help me clear my head," She explains, I nod.
"I thought you seemed happier. More sure of yourself," I said. She nodded. Suddenly, tears welled up on her eyes.
"Oh, Katniss, don't cry. Why are you upset?" I asked gently, wiping under her eyes.
She smiled slightly, she laughed lightly.
"I don't know, it's probably these babies messing with my emotions," She said. I smiled lightly.
"Now babies, don't be making your momma cry. This is supposed to be a happy trip," I scolded jokingly. Katniss smiled, resting her hand on her belly. "Katniss, there are two babies in your stomach. We get to raise them. They are half me, half you. This is incredible isn't it?" Katniss smiled at my sudden wonder.
"It is pretty incredible...We.. are going to be parents, Peeta," I nodded enthusiastically.
I was going to be a Dad. I was going to have two little humans looking up to me for support and someone to idolize. Katniss and I will be there sun and moon. Katniss will be their Mom who teaches them how to hunt and sing. I will be their Dad who teaches them to cook and bake, to draw and paint.
"Katniss, what do you think the babies are? A boy or girl?" I asked her, she thought it over for a second.
"Well, I don't know. I'd love one of each, to be even. The Mom, the Dad, a daughter, a son, a complete family, you know?" She said, and I nodded, I did know. "How about you, what do you think they are?" She questioned.
"I think that it's probably two little girls with long dark hair and their mothers beautiful eyes. They'd both be amazing but like you," She smiled but rolled her eyes at me.
"Passengers, evening has come please return to your quarters nightly roaming isn't accepted on this train," a loud voice over an intercom said.
"That's our queue. Come on, let's go get some rest." I told Katniss. She nodded, when she stood up she yawned as if my saying it was time to sleep had made her realize her exhaustion.
~
It was the middle of the night, Katniss had woken up from a nightmare. I held her in my arms gently cooing, somehow getting her back to sleep fairly quick. When Katniss' breathing evened out, I adjusted her in my arms where my face was closer to her stomach. I ran a gentle hand over her slight bulge. My babies were in there. My babies.
"Hey babies," I whispered gently. "I don't know if you can hear me, but I'm your daddy. You're really exhausting your Momma. She just fell asleep, so easy guys. I can't believe you guys are real. You guys must be adorable Little Bugs. Your Momma is.. your Momma and she is gorgeous. You guys must have inherited her beauty. I can't promise I'll be a great Daddy but you can count on your Momma. She will always be a great Momma," I told them. "You guys are my cute Little Bugs. Let's go to sleep now. Good night babies, my Little Bugs," I said, then I kissed Katniss belly twice. With that, I readjusted Katniss in my arms and fell into a content sleep. Knowing my beautiful wife was protecting my beautiful babies.
~
"Peeta! No no no Peeta, get her! Save them please!" Katniss screamed. I sat up and pulled her in my arms.
"Katniss, shh baby you're okay, you're safe, Katniss wake up," I whispered. She kept screaming.
"No! My babies! No PRIMROSE! No please," She whimpered. I shook Katniss gently. She turned and put her face in my chest. She started heaving breaths. She looked up at me showing she was awake. "Peeta," she said, voice shaking and her arms squeezing my center. I brushed my finger through her hair gently, she sighed deeply, "Peeta, I don't want to go back to sleep. I'm scared," She whimpered quietly.
"Oh, Katniss. Just relax. Do you want to tell me what happened? Maybe talking about it will help calm you down. I can reassure you that it's just night terrors. It won't ever happen," I suggested, she shook her head slightly.
"No.. I'm not ready to relive it like that," She said simply, I nodded understandingly. "Can you.. talk to the babies again?" She asked. I looked at her surprised.
"How do you know I-" I started asking her.
"I wasn't asleep, Peeta. It was so calming. Please do it again," I sighed but nodded. I leaned down to where her stomach was. I pushed her tank top up gently. When just her belly was showing I leaned my head on her stomach. I was probably tricking myself but I think I could hear the faintest heartbeats.
"Hi babies, my Little Bugs. You know, your Momma is having a hard time sleeping. It better not be you doing that. It must be exhausting having you guys in your belly so you need to go easy on your Momma. I can't wait for you to be out in the world with us. I would bet your Momma wants you here too," I said gently. Katniss sighed.
"You're going to be a great Dad, Peeta," I smiled, even though I didn't believe it.
"And you're going to be an amazing Mom, Katniss. We will be the best team," I told her, angling my head on her stomach to where I could see her.
"We will be a great team. I'm not so sure about my being an amazing Mom, though," I sat up and pulled her into my lap. I put my hands on top of hers and put our hands on her belly. Her tank top was still pulled up so that our hands were on the skin of her stomach. "These precious babies deserve the best mother, I'm not sure I'll be able to be that for them," She sighed.
"Katniss, you will be an amazing Mom. Just remember how you were with Prim. You were like her Mother and you did amazing with her. Have hope for your own babies. Katniss, if either of us will be a bad parent it'll be me. I have absolutely no experience. But, we will even each other. When I scold them you will probably go talk to them and understand them. When you scold them I'll go talk them into apologizing to you so that we're all happy again. Together, I know we will do amazing being parents together. You won't be alone in this. Ever," I said. I looked down and sure enough I'd put Katniss to sleep with my endless talking, for once. I leaned back and got comfortable. I fell into a deep sleep, hopefully still protecting Katniss and my babies from the nightmares.
~
"Passengers, we will be arriving in district four in fifteen minutes please prepare to exit," The intercom said.
Katniss sat in front of me sipping milk as I took a long drink of my coffee. Katniss stood up and held her hand out for me to take. I took it and stood. Together we walked to our quarters. In our room Katniss collected our clothes and folded them and put them back into the suitcases. When we had our quarters cleaned back up Katniss set the suitcases by the door. I pulled her into my arms in a hug.
"Did you sleep well last night after, well after I talked to the babies?" I asked her, she sighed gently but nodded.
"I did sleep better. I felt bad for not being able to listen to the rest of your speech. Last night, your voice had a certain lull that made me so sleepy. Like a lullaby to a baby," She said, I laughed lightly.
"Well, that's great to know. Now I know I can talk you to sleep," She smiled slightly.
"Yes, you can. But I'm still so tired. I don't know how many months along I am but this is exhausting already. I can't believe I will have to deal with this for another few months," She said, I took a minute to think.
"I think you're probably around three months along maybe more. I know nothing about pregnancies but in my masculine guesstimation you're three and a fifth months along," I joked lightly. Katniss laughed her beautiful light laugh.
"Okay Peeta, let's trust this masculine judgement of yours," She said with a light laugh. She buried her head in my chest, we stood there for a few minutes. Suddenly the room shook, the train had stopped.
"Passengers, we have arrived in District Four. Please be sure you have all of your belongings and head to an exit. We hope you enjoyed your stay, it was a pleasure having you," The voice said I've the intercom.
Katniss pulled away and grabbed her suitcase. I grabbed her hand and my suitcase and we left our quarters. We roamed the train looking for an exit. Once we found one, we stepped off and took a look around. Katniss and I walked along the side of the train back to the main station. When we got there I saw a familiar bronze hair. I pulled Katniss in that direction. When Finnick saw us, he pulled Annie and we met in the middle.
"Peeta!" he said with a smile. He pulled me into a quick hug.
"Finnick," I replied. I heard Annie squeal.
"Oh lord! You're Katniss! I've heard so much about you," She said pulling a surprised Katniss into a tight hug.
"You must be Annie. I hope you've been hearing good things about me," Katniss jokes. Annie laughed then nodded quickly.
"Of course, of course. Come on, let's get going guys," Annie said. Katniss nodded and let Annie pull her ahead and left Finnick and I behind. Finnick and I followed behind them at a slower pace.
"So that's you beloved Katniss, huh?" Finnick said. I nodded, which was not what I was expecting.
"Yup the one and only," I told him. He nodded as he pushed the door open leading us to the parking lot where Annie still pulled Katniss along.
"Jo is having dinner with us so be prepared. Annie is convinced apologies are in order but knowing Jo that isn't necessarily going to happen," Finn told me, I nodded making a mental note to talk to Katniss.
Annie and Katniss were already waiting in the car when we got there. Finnick put our suitcases in the trunk then showed me to the backseat where he sat with me. Katniss and Annie already sat in the front seats.
~
Finnick and Annie had a house right on the beach. It was amazing. You walk out the front door and there is sand in your toes. You can see the ocean through almost a window in their house.
Katniss and I sat on the bed in the guest room that we were staying in.
"Finnick said Johanna is going to eat dinner with us," I said. She looked up at me with worried eyes.
"Finnick also said that Annie was going to try to get Jo to apologize to you even though she probably wouldn't," I added on.
"Johanna sounds like a lovely girl. I just can't wait to meet her," Katniss said sarcastically.
"Please, Katniss. Don't be cold to me because she is there. It will just give her more hope that our relationship isn't a good one and that she can do more stuff. For your own sake, don't let her bother you please," I told her gently. Katniss furrowed her eyebrows.
"No, Peeta! Don't tell me how to act. I'm going to do what I want to. Don't try to be the boss of me, I'm not a five year old," She whined.
"Well, you sound like one. Katniss," I said not realizing what was making her upset. But when her lip quivered and her eyes welled up with tears I tried to back track. "Wait, Katniss I didn't mean-" I tried.
"No, Peeta. You already said it," She said, turning away from me. I pulled her back towards me, I wrapped my arms around her.
"I'm sorry, Katniss. I didn't mean it. I know you didn't mean to act like that. I know it's not you. I'm not used to this yet. just give me a while and soon I won't do anything similar to that at all. Let's just try to avoid fighting during this trip. It needs to be a happy trip. Maybe like a last hurrah for us. Our last time to go have fun before we're parents. Okay, hun?" I told her. She nodded.
"Okay, a happy trip," Katniss said. I nodded and sat us back down on the bed. Gently I played with her hair as she calmed down in my lap. There was a knock on the door.
"Come in," I said quietly, trying not to disturb Katniss who might've fallen asleep. The door cracked open and Annie peeked her head in. She stepped in lightly.
"Are you guys settling in nicely?" She asked. I nodded, looking down at Katniss to see that she had closed her eyes, most likely asleep. "That's nice, I'm glad to see she's comfortable," Annie said, I nodded with a light laugh.
"Being pregnant isn't easy on her," I said with a small smile. Annie gasped, I looked up quickly.
"Wait, she's pregnant!?" Annie asked happily. I realized that they didn't know that yet.
"Yeah, she is, with two babies too," Annie smiled so brightly.
I smiled. It really was amazing.
What if it had been identical twins? Then one was the one that died and now we might have two babies who don't look alike as twins usually do. Fraternal twins, I think it's called. Would we call them the twins or the triplets? Would Katniss want to name the other triplet when we have the other babies? Would their names tie together somehow or would they just be separate?
"Peeta, Peeta?" Annie said, pulling me out of my thoughts.
"Wait, huh? Yeah, what?" I said, realizing she'd been talking to me.
"I was just saying, that I'd come in here to tell you guys lunch is ready. She doesn't have to come if you don't want to wake her," Annie explained.
"Oh um, I'll wake her and we'll be down soon," I said. Annie nodded and walked out of the room.
~
After lunch, Annie and Finnick took us out to the ocean. Katniss loved it. Her and Finnick went swimming, while Annie and I sat on the beach watching them. The sun was setting behind the blue ocean. The sun's rays stretched out into the blue sky, I wanted so badly to draw or paint it.
"Hey Ann, do you have a camera I can use?" I asked.
"Oh yeah, you want it now?" She replied, I nodded, she stood up and went to get it from the house which was probably 12 feet from where we sat in the sand. After two minutes she ran back out and handed it to me, "Be quick, sunsets like this don't last long," I nodded and started figuring out how the camera worked and taking pictures. I looked through the ones I took, there was one good one, when I looked back up the sun was gone. "Did you get a good one?" Annie asked.
"Yeah, I think I did," I told her, showing her the picture. She nodded constantly at it.
"Hey, you want to help me make dinner? Jo should be coming over soon. She told me what she did and oh my Lord did she get a talking to! That way entirely inappropriate of her! I mean you talked about Katniss all night and then she does that, I'm telling you that woman has no manner whatsoever," Annie said.
"Yeah, I'll help make dinner," I said. I didn't need to think about what happened with Johanna because without Katniss here. I was suddenly hyper aware of the scars along my arms that Jo's actions led to. Annie nodded, seeing I didn't want to talk about that and helped me pick up the towels to head inside. When we got to their kitchen Annie pulled out bread and other things to make sandwiches. Together we simultaneously made the sandwiches without having to discuss who was doing what we just worked together.
Finnick and Katniss walked into the house, they both had towels wrapped around each other. Finnick said he was going to go wash up. I took Katniss back upstairs so we could both get ready for dinner. When I closed the door behind us Katniss started talking.
"I told Finnick. I told Finnick about our babies. And how one of them died. And about Prim. It was so weird but, it was like he was my big brother I never had. I could tell him anything. I'm sorry if you didn't want them to know," Katniss said in a rush. I smiled at her.
"It's fine Katniss, I trust Finnick, also I told Annie you're pregnant but only that," I said.
"Wow Peeta we are just great at keeping secrets huh?" She said with a slight laugh.
I nodded, "Yep, we're the best!" I said with a laugh.
"Yeah. I'm gonna get ready," She said, walking into the bathroom.
"Okay," I said, opening the closet door to pick out some of my own clothes. I couldn't decide, so I asked Katniss what she thought I should wear.
"Hey Katniss?" I called her.
"Yeah?" I heard her answer through the bathroom door.
"Can you help me pick out a shirt?" I questioned.
"Yeah sure! Do you have any that you're trying to pick from?" She asked me, exiting the bathroom.
I held up the two shirts that I was thinking about wearing. One was a light shade of blue, similar to the color that the ocean had been earlier, the other a darker shade of green almost like the trees back home in 12.
Katniss tilted her head to the side, looking from me to the shirts, then back to me, squinting her eyes as she studied them.
"Wow," I said jokingly. "You're really putting a lot of thought into this," I said with a grin.
"What's wrong with that?" She questioned me. "I just wanna make sure you look good!" She said, kissing me lightly on the cheek, a smile adorning her face. It made me happy that I could get her to smile, even when her life was all but happy.
"Okay!" I said. "I mean it's only dinner with Finn, Annie, and Jo, upstairs, but we will stun them with our dazzling beauty I guess!" I joked, frowning when her face clouded over when I mentioned Johanna. It made my head hurt, just thinking about how I had betrayed Katniss's trust like that, and how it had hurt her so much.
She shook her head, probably willing the thoughts of Johanna to go away, and smiled again. "Yes, we will," She said, turning to walk back and get dressed. "Also, go with the blue shirt," She said. "It's kinda like the ocean, it'll look pretty!" She stated.
I nodded, and pulled the shirt on over my head.
After we got dressed, we headed back upstairs finding Finnick and Annie at the top of the stairs.
"Hey guys!" Finnick said with a smile. "We were coming down to see if you guys were doing okay," He said.
"Yeah, we're good," I said, as we walked to the living room, which had a beautiful view of the ocean that I could tell Katniss loved, as she kept glancing on it with a smile on her face. This trip really was a good way for her to clear her head about Prim, and everything that had happened.
"So are you hungry?" Annie asked us, holding up a plate of sandwiches. Seeing the sandwiches made me realize that I actually was quite hungry, so I nodded, and we went over to the table.
I bit into the soft bread, and tasted fish in the middle, which made sense because they lived by the ocean. In 12 people would just take whatever food they could get.
Annie handed Finnick and Katniss one too, before taking one for herself.
Katniss held her sandwich up to her mouth, but put it down before taking a bite.
"Are you okay?" I asked her, concerned that she wasn't eating. "If you need to we can go downstairs," I said
She shook her head at me with a laugh. "I'm fine Peeta, calm down! I just remembered I'm not supposed to eat fish," She finished.
"Are you allergic?" I questioned.
"No silly, it's because of the babies!" She said, still laughing.
"Oh right," I said chuckling.
"What's so funny?" Finnick asked us, as he had been talking to Annie while me and Katniss were talking.
"Oh nothing," Katniss said, a smile still on her face.
"I wonder where Johanna is..." Finnick said, and I cringed, knowing that Katniss would become upset at the mention of Johanna.
Annie shot Finnick for a look, and Finnick gave her an apologetic smile back.
"It's fine," Annie said, trying to smooth things over. "She usually is late,"
Katniss scoffed, rolling her eyes as if this came as no surprise to her.
"So, how long have you and Katniss been married?" Annie asked.
"2 months? Right, Kat?" I asked her.
She nodded, her face lighting up when she talked about our marriage, and how Finnick and Annie weren't bothered by the age gap that Katniss and I had between us.
"Yeah, it's been like 2 and a half months," She replied, still grinning.
We settled into a comfortable conversation talking about everyday things, and the ocean, and Annie made Katniss a sandwich, no fish this time.
We were interrupted by a loud bang, followed by careless footsteps. I turned around, looking for the source of the noise, and saw none other than Johanna, standing in the doorway.
"What?" She asked defensively. "Did I interrupt your perfect little get together?" She questioned, sarcasm lacing her voice.
I glanced at Katniss, and saw her face fill with anger. I could practically hear her thoughts churning through her head by just seeing her expression. She was probably thinking what the hell made Peeta want to kiss her? And I knew that this dinner might get kind of ugly between them, because as soon as Johanna locked eyes with Katniss, she smirked, and walked past me, purposely brushing her hand across my shoulders.
I flinched at her touch. There was no way I was letting her manipulate me like last time again. Especially with Katniss here after so much happened to her.
"Well...how are you Johanna?" Annie asked, attempting to get rid of the uncomfortable silence that had ensued as soon as Johanna walked through the door.
"Good. Met some dude at a bar," She said.
Katniss was beginning to get irritated. "What, so you just go around clubs just making out with guys while they're drunk, then never seeing them again?" She questioned.
"Yeah, sounds like you've got it right," She said with a smirk. "Although you're boyfriend here-" She started, but was cut off by Katniss.
"Husband," She said coldly.
"Ah, already married I see," She said. "Well you move fast," She muttered under her breath, but we both heard.
"Anyways your husband," She said, glancing at Katniss, who rolled her eyes again. "He is a bit different, as here I am seeing him again. Who knows, maybe he'll realize he wants me more than you and we'll get back to where we were," She said.
I knew she was just trying to make Katniss angry, but it was making me angry too. She had no right to speak to Katniss like this. I tried to calm down, looking to Finnick and Annie, who gave me an apologetic smile.
"Jo," Finnick said. "Really that's enough. You're being rude," He said sternly.
"Wow, great observation! I'm gonna go get some more food. Don't do anything good while I'm gone," She said, glaring at Katniss once more before entering the kitchen on the search for some more sandwiches.
Katniss looked to me, her eyes stormy, her previous smile now erased from her face.
"Well, she's just pleasant don't you think, Peeta?" She said sarcastically.
"Katniss, calm down. I know she's a bit irritating but still-" I tried to say, but was cut off by Katniss's sharp words.
"What do you mean she's a bit irritating!? She's- she's disgusting! Like seriously I didn't know a human could even be that annoying!" She yelled.
"Okay, yeah maybe she is kind of... well awful. Just try not to let her get under your skin," I said, taking hold of her hands and rubbing my thumb over them.
"You're beautiful, you know that right?" I said to her.
"You remind me every day. How could I not?" She said, a trace of her smile coming back.
"Sorry about her, Katniss," Annie apologized.
"It's fine," Katniss replied.
"No, it's not really. I know how bad she can get sometimes we should've said something to her," She said, looking guilty.
"Annie," I said. "Really, it's okay. We're good," I explained to her. I didn't want her to feel bad even when Johanna had been the one causing all of the trouble.
We were talking for about five more minutes, before Johanna reentered the room. She brought with her a cloud of negativity, like just her presence was enough to put you into a bad mood.
"Your favorite person is back!" She said sarcastically, and was greeted by blank stares. "Wow, you guys are a fun bunch." She grumbled.
"So any fun topics that we wanna talk about?" She questioned, stuffing her fish sandwich into her mouth.
"Um...we went to the beach today?" Finnick said.
"I really don't care but okay, fun!" She replied, and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her.
Like what did she want us to talk about? Did she only enjoy annoying and making fun of people? Was that her goal in life, to just be as annoying as possible? Well, she certainly seemed to be excelling at it.
"What do you wanna talk about then?" Katniss questioned her, an edge to her voice.
"Anything that won't bore me to death would be good," She replied.
"Well, in that case we should talk about the most boring things so she just dies. That would at least give us some peace and quiet," Katniss said, and I knew that she was past trying to ignore her. Now she just wanted to infuriate Johanna too.
"Wow, this girl's got a temper," She said with a laugh.
"Look who's talking," Katniss muttered.
"Anyway, how old are you? You look pretty young to be married to him," She said. God, out of all the people to explain this too, Johanna was going to be the worst.
Katniss glanced at me before answering. "I'm sixteen," She said, looking her straight in the eyes. She probably had gotten tired of the constant judging from other people, just as I had.
Johanna laughed. "Now, that is something we could talk about!" She said, and I wanted to move on from this conversation, but remained silent, because I didn't want her to know that she was succeeding in her task to infuriate everyone at this table.
"Wait, so you were like twelve years old when she was born?" She asked.
"Yeah, around there." I said.
She continued to laugh, as if our age was somehow hilarious to her.
"You're only like a kid then!" She exclaimed to Katniss, and I knew that was the wrong thing to say to her.
"I am not a kid! I might be younger than him, but we are married, and I'm going to have two kids of my own soon, who will see me as a mother not a child, just like everyone else should!" She yelled, her voice fading away once she realized what she had just revealed to Johanna.
"You're going to-" Johanna started.
"I-I mean...I uh-" Katniss stammered, trying to find a way to cover up what she had just revealed.
"Holy shit," Johanna said. "Holy shit. You mean to tell me that you are pregnant," She looked from me, to Katniss, then back to me again, staring in disbelief.
"Wow. Something actually shut her up," Katniss jokes, attempting to break the tension in the room.
"That's disgusting though!" Johanna exclaimed, and I clenched my fists under the table, telling myself that I wasn't going to get insanely mad like I wanted to. "You're like ten years apart, have only been married for like two months, and you're already pregnant?" She said. "I mean I thought my life was messed up but you guys just took it to a whole new level!" She said, and I had maybe never been more mad in my life.
She just came in here, started being a jerk to Katniss, and thought it was perfectly fine to just insult everyone left and right!
"Jo," Annie said. "Stop it. Peeta and Katniss are good people, I don't know what you have against them," She said, trying to help us.
"Oh, I have nothing against them. I just think it's stupid that he wouldn't give me a chance," She said, looking at me seductively. "Wanna give me a chance Peeta?" She said again, approaching where I was sitting. I stiffened when she touched my face lightly.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Katniss exclaimed, standing up, about to shove Jo away from me.
"Well, I'm just allowing him to see all that he missed out on by marrying you," She said to katniss.
"Get away from him," Katniss said forcibly.
I stood up, distancing myself from Johanna.
"Looks like he did it himself," Johanna noted sarcastically to Katniss.
"Yeah, who wouldn't want to get away from you?" Katniss muttered under her breath.
"Oh, shut up!" Johanna said to her. "At least I'm not the one who had her husband cheat on her because she wasn't good enough!" She said, knowing that was a touchy subject for Katniss.
"Wait a minute," I interrupted before she could go on. "Katniss is the best person in my life. She is more than good enough. I was drunk when you kissed me! And you are a disgusting excuse of a person if you think I would ever leave Katniss, especially now," I exclaimed.
I was done with this girl. She had taken it way too far.
"Johanna, I think it's time for you to leave," Finnick said sternly.
"You can't just kick me out Finn! I'm allowed to have an opinion," She snarled.
"Well, keep your opinion to yourself!" Katniss yelled, her fists clenched.
"Ugh, I don't understand how he wants you," Johanna said, her voice softer now, but still angry.
"You're just a whiny little kid that he's gonna get rid of once he gets fed up with you! He's going to leave you one day for someone who is RIGHT for him, unlike you. You're a child. No one wants a child. you are going to be all alone with those kids since you're so young and immature. And nobody's going to want you. Since you're tainted and just a child," She said with venom in her voice. She stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
I looked to Katniss to see her eyes welling up with tears.
"Katniss..." I whispered. She shook her head, retreating back to the basement, crying. I looked at Finnick and Annie.
"Peeta," Finnick said. "We are so sorry about her," He said.
"No, it's fine Finn, it's not your fault," I said. "I'm gonna go and talk to her," I said to them. They nodded, walking back to the family room to give us space.
I slowly walked down the steps, unsure if Katniss would want to be comforted right now, or would rather be alone. But I couldn't have her thinking that all of those things that Johanna said about her were true.
"Katniss?" I called softly.
"Mhm," I heard her say, her voice muffled by a pillow that was catching her tears.
"Katniss," I said gently, sitting down next to her on the bed. "You know that nothing she said was true, right?" I questioned.
She lifted her tearstained face from the pillow. "But what if it is true, Peeta!?" She yelled. "How do I know you're not just going to leave me!" She exclaimed, her voice shaking. "E-everyone is leaving me," She sobbed.
"Katniss, I am never going to leave you. Ever. No matter what anyone says or does I will always be here okay? Because I love you and I'm not stupid enough to throw all of that love for you away. You are the best thing in my life and I don't know what I would do without you," I said, feeling a tear slip down my cheek.
Katniss leaned into me, her back shaking as she tried to calm her crying. "If you ever leave me Peeta Mellark, I will personally find you and remind you of this exact conversation," She said, looking up at me with a small smile.
"Well, I'm never going to leave you so you won't have to do that," I responded, wrapping my arms tightly around her, holding her in a protective embrace.
"I love you, Peeta," She whispered.
"Love you too, Kat," I said back.
