When people are digging deeper into the Earth, they aren't really digging deeper. I mean, they are but they aren't. Since the earth is round and spherical, then as they dig "deeper" they are actually getting closer to the other side of the Earth. They're getting farther from one side, yes. But they're also getting closer to the other side.
