Chapter 4-Scarlett

I slowly reached into my handbag to pull out my wallet and see a few notes there. I looked at one of them, the face of Banjo Patterson looking into the midst. Suddenly, Jean-Louis began screaming in French and fumbling around, which clearly meant that the effect of the gollywoggles was continuing to grow. Malawi attempted to calm Jean-Louis down, but failed. I would have too, because nobody could prevent the gollywoggles that easily.

I said quietly to Jean-Louis "Take a deep breath. In. Out. Relax. Everything will be fine. You'll get used it. A learning process." Jean-Louis replied "Pardón?" Malawi interrupted suddenly "Relax, it'll be fine soon," Malawi sounded calmer than I had ever heard her.

"I'm just telling him to calm down" I told her, motioning to her to sit down with us.

Malawi just continued to stay where she was filing through papers and scanning each one, occasionally peeking up to Jean-Louis..

Malawi slowly turned her head towards me. I looked at her. Her black eyes stared gleaming into mine. I reached into my bag again, to pull out a silver necklace. I knew Malawi probably wouldn't accept it but I still gave it a try. "Take it" I said sternly. "No" replied Malawi sharply. "Why don't you take it, Malawi? I'd actually be happier if you took it." Malawi didn't reply. She just whispered, "I like it, but.."

"Let's start making some serious progress here" were the soft words that came out of my mouth. "Jean-Louis could die in a week and we've been lounging around here like tired roomies" "We think we know where the gollywoggles are located, so let's find them, for goodness sake" I added. "Are you hiding something from me, Scarlett?" Malawi sensed suspiciously "One of my feelings" she said after about a minute of silence. "One of your feelings" I replied scornfully "Oh well. I guess to had to come out at some point. You see, Malawi, my boyfriend is actually a girlfriend." "I see" Malawi said stroking the necklace as if it was a cat.

I saw the reaction Malawi took to this. She was actually rather happy because of her story with Amahle and how she complained about there : quote 'are not enough gays' unquote. I didn't actually say I would get married, I didn't have any plans for that after what happened with Johnny, my previous boyfriend. My current girlfriends name was Lilac Johanssen. She was a Norwegian who escaped from Syria as a child, when her parents took her there, because they both were involved in the war there. Her parents died on the war sight in Syria and she escaped to Perth and from there she came to Melbourne. I hadn't mentioned this because I always remembered about how gay marriage was not legal and that always made me feel depressed. Not for the fact that I couldn't get married to Lilac, I didn't even want to, not yet anyhow, but for all the other people out there that do want to get married, but can't. That's what I feel depressed about. I told this all to Malawi and she seemed to cheer me up, although she seemed a bit more upset when she reminisced on the past.
