Chapter Nine
I woke up in the same mood I had been in all week--depressed. Not only did Alaina pick Kevin, but I had been beaten up in the process.
What did Alaina even see in him?
Who was I kidding, it was probably his dashing looks, supposed nice manner, and fiery spirit. I guess that was enough for her...
Still, she didn't seem like the kind of person who would go for an ingus, with her being a -
I sat up in bed. Oh my goodness. I like Alaina and I don't even know what kind of elemental she is. Well... If she even is an elemental at all.
Not that it mattered for me, but Kevin was a judgmental person when it came to elements. He would refuse to go out with any girl who had the "wrong element."
I quickly got out of bed and got dressed, grabbing a snack on my way out. Soon, I had made it to the library.
The massive brick structure stood in front of me, chanting at me to come in so it could swallow me whole. I took the dare and walked up its steps.
Once inside the library, I walked around aimlessly a bit before asking the receptionist where the ancestry books were. She glared at me under her glasses, then pointed her hand to the left, where a convenient sign I hadn't noticed before was guiding to the books. I awkwardly smiled and thanked her before walking away as quickly as possible.
The signage got more and more sparse as I got deeper and deeper into the library. I went own steps a few minutes ago, but they were now far behind me. Soon, I was the only one in the dimly lit hallway.
A gush of wind from who knew where hit me and I shivered, bundling myself in my way too thin shirt. I pressed on, my feet clicking against the cold bare floor.
Eventually, I reached the end of the hallway. A room was right in front of me, door closed. Even though I didn't know exactly what was behind it, I could tell it wasn't just books. My fingers grasped the handle and imminently jerked back.
It was ice cold. Even I, who wasn't normally effected by water, was grasping my hand to try to stop it from freezing it as well. I hesitantly reached back towards the handle, this time more prepared to pressure through the cold.
However, as soon as my hand made contact with it once again, I pulled back, but this time for a completely different reason. Now it was flaming hot.
I decided to try one more time, which ended up with another jerk away from the thorny handle.
I got aggravated and reached for the handle again, but this time it was nothing but air.
What kind of sick game was this?
This time, more motivated because all the elements were used already, I reached for the handle with more force. I ended up falling forward as the door disappeared, revealing light from within.
I stood up and brushed myself off before looking around the room. It was separated into 5 different sections, each holding a book on a pedestal. One book was floating in midair, another bouncing up and down on fire, another drifting on water, another resting on tree roots, and the last one resting on a rainbow, illuminating whole the room.
I had never seen the scene before me in real life, only in pictures where the author could make their own interpretation of how the room was suppose to look.
Let's just say, the it didn't look anything like the picture. For one, there were only four pedestals in the pictures I had seen.
I walked over to the water one and hesitantly picked up the book. Immediately with the noise of crashing waves, the water disappeared. Guess there was no putting the book back now.
I started to pace back and forth as I scanned each page, looking for Alaina's name. The books were infused with magic, so the words moved and bended as I read them. Also, every now and then a new name appeared as some aqua was born.
I found a few Alainas after scanning a few times. Why didn't I learn her last name before I came?
I mentally marked her possibly being in that book and I walked back over to where the aqua pedestal was and held out the book. The pedestal re-appeared and I put the book down.
I went to the ignus next, almost burning my hands as I grabbed the book. There were a few Alainas mentioned. Hopefully none of them were her. Most igni I knew were total hotheads.
I searched through the terra book (the ones who cared more about creatures than elementals) and finally the aeris one (the ones who were a little more light headed than normal). No Alaina was mentioned in the terra book, but two were mentioned in the aeris one.
She had to be in one of those, but there was no way of knowing which one unless I knew more about her. On a splurge, I decided to try the leukos book, too, just to be sure.
I slowly turned around to face the book sitting on the light. It was the smallest of them all, for the leukos had died off years ago. Apparently, some secret society had killed off every leukos, including the crown prince, because of some obscene hatred for them about them bearing the light. It was now a bedtime story that if you didn't eat all your food before dinner, then an infamous leukos would come and turn off the lights in your eyes so you would never be able to see again.
I hesitantly walked towards the book, sweeping at it with sweating hands.
My hands passed right through. I stepped back and walked around the rainbow.
Is this supposed to happen?
I tried again, this time using my whole body to try to grab the book. Instead, I miserably fell on the floor. Rotating my body so I was facing the ceiling, I started to get up, when I noticed something.
Underneath the rainbow, edged in little scratches of some glowing substance, were words.
Just like a rainbow created by storm and light,
And the ever mysterious color white,
This book, listing only few,
Is made of the creation of two
I layed there for a moment trying to decipher what in the world the poem meant.
So the leukos book is made of two books? My eyes scanned the room. Which ones though?
I started with the aqua and aeris book, laying them inside the leukos book's faded image. No such luck. Next, I tried the aqua and ignus. Nothing. I knew not to try with the terra book because if there were no Alainas in it and she for some peculiar reason was a leukos, then it wouldn't make sense for the book to work.
Finally, I tried the last option. Aeris and ignus.
I put the ignus book down first then laid the aeris on top.
A new book landed in my hand with a thud. Slowly, I turned the pages, searching for Alaina's name under each of the family trees. I found only one Alaina. And her last name matched with two of the other books, the ignus and aeris.
But that couldn't happen. She couldn't be leukos. They were extinct! I closed my dry mouth and went to close the book, only to graze her name instead.
Her face came up on the pages of the book. I saw her smiling, and her eyes shimmering in the light. They changed color even in the confines of the book.
The book fell out of my hands, landing on the ground with a loud thud. I slowly backed away from it as it slid over to the light beam that had just appeared.
This. Was. Impossible.
How could Alaina, a common girl, be leukos.
And a main target for anyone who wanted the entire leukos element eliminated.
I turned around quickly to go tell her as her knight in shining armor. I started to run faster than ever, out of the room, out of the library, and right into Kevin. I didn't even care if we were no longer friends, Alaina needed to know so she could protect herself.
"Kevin. Alaina, she's a... " I whispered the next part. "leukos."
Kevin acted like he was surprised.
"But- but that's a-"
"A myth, I know. They're real. Alaina is... one of them. She could be in danger. Do you know where she is?" I asked frantically. Kevin just stared at me, then started laughing before falling serious.
"Wait. Were you going to run off and tell her? That's cute. You think that she'll listen to you, or even if she does, believe you? Come on, who's she gonna trust? The guy who she thinks put her dad out of a job, or her boyfriend?"
"You're her- she's your? You two are together?"
"Yea."
I swallowed hard, forcing myself to say the next sentence. As much as I hated to admit it, Kevin was right. At the moment, Alaina wouldn't trust me, but she would trust Kevin and she had to find out somehow.
"Could... you tell her?"
"Sure, what are best friend's for?" he smiled.
I stared at him. We were not best friends. But we both liked Alaina and needed to protect her- no matter what. I forced a smile back.

AN:
Hello! Sorry for the late update! It's a lot harder to update two stories at once than one would think! Anyways, hopefully the long chapter makes up for it:)
