Almost
Kate Saunders’ heart skipped a beat, the ground was whipped from under her feet and she was falling again. She had defied Lucas’ advances but in a split second, everything had changed, with so few words Lucas had rearranged her world, her morality and beliefs hung in the balance. If Lucas had been the first brother she had met then everything could have been different and maybe Ellie’s life could have been saved. Lucas nodded back, smiling inwardly for he now had Kate Saunders, she was turning in his hand and there was no escape, her weakness was her compassion but also Lucas knew he had pricked her vanity, the blind belief that Kate truly believed that she was the only one who could save him. When so many others including his brother had tried and failed so many times before… Lucas advanced closer until he was a hairbreadth away and his breath upon her skin but he judged the moment well and held back. Kate knew Lucas had lost his humanity long ago, had done some truly bad things but was he beyond redemption? Maybe all along it had also been her destiny to meet Lucas, Kate truly believed that she could help him. And when Dominic returned, she could reconcile the two brothers, could help them both hold onto their humanity but then she wasn’t too sure what kind of person she was turning into…Kate Saunders had once had her own life in another time and place, by rights she should be dead but here she was, caught between these two passionate brothers and wondering how much longer Dominic could keep her safe in this world. Kate could not lie to herself, despite everything she had discovered about Lucas, he still had a hold over her. Unable to resist any longer Kate gazed into Lucas’ searching eyes, she was tired of fighting, she had been running for too long and if Lucas wanted her so badly then maybe she’d better give herself to him…Loneliness began to consume Kate again and even though she knew it was Lucas keeping him away there was no sign of Dominic returning. How much did he know of his brother’s terrible actions, how complicit was he in letting Lucas roam unchecked through time? Kate desperately needed Dominic to return, the longer she was left alone with Lucas the more it felt like Dominic had never been here.
“Let me show you how much I need you, only you can keep me safe Kate Saunders. Come away with me now.”
Kate could stand it no longer, his eyes resembled Dominic’s too much, she was clinging onto the edge and part of her gladly wanted to let go and fall. Lucas had been far too intimate with Kate physically but he had never kissed her, she wondered if she would feel the same way as she did with Dominic if Lucas was to kiss her now…Suddenly there was no air left in the room, Kate Saunders closed her eyes as an uninvited tremor swept through her body but as swiftly as that dark flame was lit it was gone because when Kate opened her eyes she wanted Dominic with all his passion, childish contradictions and kind smile to be standing there, she ached for Dominic but it was still Lucas standing there, the killer of her friend and nothing that the dark and complex Lucas could say and do would ever reconcile her to that. Lucas would always be the wrong man.
“Oh almost.” Lucas purred contentedly, the heightened moment of arousal between them was enough for him even if Kate still alluded him. “Just like the last time we met but we’re not even touching but whenever you’re alone you can still feel me touching you. Can’t you?”
“Please leave me alone. I didn’t ask for any this.”
Kate’s widened eyes glittered as the first tear begin to form within them but Lucas had seen the light in her eyes before she had closed them.
“Your eyes tell me otherwise.” Lucas cooed tauntingly, savouring every moment of his victory over her because although he knew Kate undoubtedly loved his brother, there was nevertheless something between them, a dark visceral connection which neither of them could deny.
“You can’t keep Dominic from out of this time for much longer!” Kate yelled desperately, all the time thinking that Dominic will come to her rescue at any moment but she had always heard him, a voice inside her head telling her what to do whenever she was in danger but now everything was silent.
“You’re right Kate…And Dominic’s growing stronger by the day, there’s something he’s keeping from me. We used to be so close you know.” Lucas carefully tucked Kate’s wavy hair behind her ear and whispered mournfully with something which sounded like regret. “I wanted you to come willingly to me but then again, maybe the thrill was always in the chase. It is too late Kate Saunders, I’m in your head and I’m part of you as well whether we like it or not…” Then Lucas smiled, it was the coldest and most spiteful smile Kate had ever seen. “Very well if you won’t come willingly than it’s my turn to send you away in time and hide you, then see how my brother will find you.
Lucas’ hand began to glow, sparks of raw energy flickered from his fingertips it was just the same as his brother. Lucas was going to send her away and there was nothing Kate could do to stop him as she pressed her face against the wall to shield her eyes from the light, she wasn’t afraid anymore of what Lucas was about to do to her, she had grown used to this never ending, torturous existence, no there was little left for Kate Saunders to fear, only the thought of forgetting everything that had passed and losing Dominic all over again.
