the cool metallic ruler in hand
with each small increment etched and inked,
laying beneath my gentle fingertips,
the sharpened point of my heart
grazing along the sides
and deep crimson spills
and rolls over every curve and fold
like sweet kisses left behind by my parted lips.

a straight edge
one assumes
but when turned over,
the wooden layer
that my heart followed
wasn't so straight.
