Chapter 17: Christopher
"Come pick up the gift."
Will's voice snapped me out of my trance. He abruptly ended the call, taking one last look at the lifeless body in front of us, "let's go Chris."
I told myself to move, but my legs were cemented to the ground. The gun was still in my right hand, feeling as if it weighed a ton. My arm twitched uncontrollably.
Will placed his hand on my shoulder, "once you get over this feeling that you're having right now, you'll be alright."
Alright? I just killed a man. Again. This time on purpose. And this lunatic is telling me that everything will be fine? As if killing people is as easy as breathing.
Losing patience, Will snatched the gun from my hand, "the cleanup crew will be here soon, and I've got a ton of shit to do. Are you coming or not, you know I'll leave your ass here."
The last thing I wanted to do was stay here with a dead body and another man who was bleeding out by the seconds. As Will started walking towards the door, I glanced at the pistol still in his hand, his grip tight.
"Wi...!"
Before I could finish uttering his name, Will shot his former soldier right in the head, not breaking his stride. It happened in slow motion, I watched as the guy fell backwards. The sound of his skull cracking against the hard floor made me cringe. Am I next?
Will pushed the main door open, the crisp night air brought me little comfort. The stench of murder and blood was slowing making its way out of my system.
As we got into the car, Will sat quietly with his hands in his lap, "I know you're probably wondering why I killed that guy?"
Which one? Only God knows how many lives he's taken. I figured it was in my best interest not to answer his question.
"I don't like weak people being in my crew," he looked me straight in the eye, "I can tell when someone has heart." He slid the key into the ignition. At this point, all I wanted to do was shower and hold Vanessa in my arms. I needed to feel human again.
As he started backing out of the parking lot, he laughed to himself, "before I forget, you're officially a member of the X crew."
"W...what?"
"I gave you an order, and you didn't even question it. You took a little longer than I would've wanted, but you got the job done. In one shot too! I'm impressed! I know it's more to you that I don't know. And I can't wait to find out!"
He couldn't contain how proud he was. Meanwhile, I was trying to overcome this sick feeling I had in the pit of my stomach.
"Will, I don't want to offend you, but I'm not with this gang shit. I'm just a humble mechanic who wants to..."
The sound of his laughter offended me, "what's so funny?" I asked.
"Cut it out Chris. It's me you're talking to. You like this shit. I can see it in your eyes. You got a lot of heart and I can respect that." After a few minutes of silence, he added, "besides we're brothers now, until death do us part."
Eyeing him out the corner of my eye I saw that his face was stern. I waited for his usual laugh that never came. This guy was really on another level of psycho. I just thank God that I was on his good side.
My phone kept vibrating in my pocket, I figured it was Vanessa. Knowing I'd be home soon, I didn't bother to answer, plus I wasn't a fan of talking to her while Will was around. We let the radio play for the rest of the ride without any words being said. Ever since I pulled that trigger, I experienced a high that I haven't felt before. It was intoxicating. As much as I didn't want to admit it. I think Will is right about me.
