One of the saddest stories in a Harry Potter:

Neville's parent's were tortured to insanity. He lived with his grandmother because so.

Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Ginny are at St. Mungos (the hospital) when they see Neville and his grandmother.

She explains what happened to Alice and Frank. Neville stands there sorrowly.

Then Alice comes over to them. Neville's grandmother tells Alice that she can do what she wants to go.

Alice holds out a closed fist. Neville hovers his palm below it. She drops an empty gum rapper.

Neville smiles at her and says "thanks mum" then she walks away.

Imagine being Neville. Your parents are in a hospital because they were tortured into insanity and their torturer is still out there. No wonder that Neville was kind of shy and innocent (until book 7) I would be too, if I were him. Don't pick on the shy kids. They most likely can't help it.
