Chapter 3: Free

Elsa's POV

I watched as the one Pitch called Jack Frost slowly inched his way towards our hideout. I tilted my head. Jack seemed careful, but he didn't seem like his usual bright happy self. Of course, I hadn't seen him in person before today.

I winced as I remembered Pitch's anger when I returned. I had failed to kill Bunny and Jack, and he was furious. I closed my eyes, remembering what had happened.

flashback

"You let them escape?" Pitch hissed, his eyes flashing dangerously.

"I'm sorry Pitch. I'll do better next time," I promised.

"You'll be lucky if there is a next time. Now that they've seen you, they'll be more careful!" Pitch yelled angrily. He snapped his fingers, and black sand crashed into me. I collapsed on the ground and shut my eyes as nightmares filled my head. After a moment, Pitch removed the black sand.

"You will go to the entrance of my lair. You will stand guard. And you will not leave until I give the order. If you fail me again, I will not be so... kind," Pitch threatened.

"Of course," I said while climbing to my feet.

end flashback

I pulled myself back into the present and watched Jack. How would Pitch want me to react? I was under orders to guard the lair, not kill anyone. Was I supposed to attack him? Or stay? I wouldn't be a very good guard if I was defeated, which was highly unlikely. And besides, I wasn't supposed to leave the entrance to the lair. Then again, I was supposed to be guarding the lair. I couldn't let him just walk in.

I dropped out of the tree, making sure I was between Jack and the entrance. He was still a good couple feet away. He blinked in surprise when he saw me, and then he gripped his staff with both hands.

"You can't come any closer," I said.

"And why not?" Jack asked.

"Because I'm supposed to be standing guard," I told him.

"Yeah, well I'm here to kill you," Jack said.

"But then I can't be a good guard," I said. Jack made a weird face.

"What?" He asked.

"I'm supposed to be standing guard. Pitch will punish me if I don't stand guard," I explained.

"Why are you talking like you have no will of your own? Are you stupid or something?" Jack asked. I opened my mouth, then paused.

"No, I'm not stupid. At least, I don't think so," I said.

"Say something for yourself then. Do something that you want to do," Jack said.

"But if I do that, Pitch will punish me," I pointed out. Jack rolled his eyes.

"I'll admit, this is sort of pathetic. I was expecting you to be some sort of terrifying fierce half mortal/half spirit. But this is just stupid. You've got the mind of a ten year old," He said.

"I can be terrifying and fierce! And I'm not a ten year old!" I said angrily.

"Oh yeah? Prove it," Jack snapped. I stood still for a moment, and then charged at Jack. I must have caught him off guard, because he stumbled back a few steps before taking to the sky and flying a short distance away. I stopped running.

"Who's the ten year old now? Are you scared Jack?" I asked.

"Of course not. I'll admit, you surprised me. But you could have just used your ice powers," He pointed out. I shrugged.

"I didn't feel like it," I said. Jack landed.

"Let's try something. Use your ice powers to make something. Anything," He said.

"Anything?" I asked. He nodded. This was strange. Pitch only ever wanted me to do what he wanted. Not what I wanted. I waved my hand and made a short little snowman. Jack looked it over.

"Very nice. You've got some talent," He said. I smiled. It was the first time I could ever remember smiling.

"You could make a decent winter spirit. But let's see how you would do... in a snowball fight!" Jack said, suddenly throwing a snowball at me. I ducked and made a snowball, which I quickly threw back at him. We threw a couple of snowballs back and forth until I finally surrendered.

"What do you know? You really can laugh!" Jack said. I stopped. I hadn't even realized that I was laughing. Laughing wasn't allowed. But it felt good to laugh. I felt lighter, and something else. Happiness?

What was happening to me?

Jack's POV

I landed beside Elsa as a confused look came over her face. What had started out as a mission to kill her had ended in a snowball fight. But I'll admit, I was curious. She didn't seem to be attacking because she wanted to. It was like Pitch had her under some sort of spell. As an experiment, I had tried to get her to do things she wanted to do. To make her happy. And believe it or not, the happier she was the more like a real person she became.

"Are you ok?" I asked.

"What are you doing here?" She asked.

"Well, originally I was coming to kill you. But now I'm not so sure," I said honestly.

"You should go. Pitch will be coming to check up on me any minute," Elsa said.

"You seem more yourself now," I noted.

"I'm serious! It was nice of you to try and help, but if you don't leave Pitch will kill you. Warn the other Guardians. He's going to attack again," She warned.

"Why don't you come with me? We could protect you," I offered.

"Come with you? To the Guardians? I would never do that! The Guardians would kill me!" Elsa said.

"No we wouldn't!" I protested.

"You wanted to kill me," She pointed out.

"But-" I started to protest, but she cut me off.

"Get out of here!" She said, shoving me. Then she turned and ran back the way she had come. I took off and flew back to the North Pole.

That had probably been the most confusing conversation I had ever had. But at least I made some progress. She had betrayed Pitch at the very end. That meant that maybe, with a little work, I could turn her to the light side.
