Chapter One: Myra
Myra looked up when she heard a knock. With a sigh, she put down her 3DS, got up from her bed, where she was sitting, and wandered to the door. As soon as she opened it, she was met with a familiar face.
"Enzo!" The girl shouted with glee, hugging her friend. She met him at her new school when she first moved in with her foster parents. Enzo was tall, with short dark hair and grey eyes. Today he wore a white hoodie and jeans, nothing special.
Myra pulled her light brown hair out of her face and invited him into her room. "Sorry it's a mess." She apologized, straightening her shirt. It was green, with an image of the Triforce on it. Myra was a huge gamer, and loved making theories and connecting the game-universe together.
"Ah, that's fine." Enzo smiled. He made himself at home by sitting right on Myra's bed, studying the posters on the wall. Myra only smiled, slightly awkward.
"So, what brings you here?" She asked, absent minded-ly sorting out all the figurines and papers on her desk. Enzo looked up at her with a smirk.
"What, you don't enjoy my company?" He joked. Myra rolled her eyes.
The sunlight poured into the room through a glass window above the double-size bed. A dresser sat at the foot of the bed, with a storage shelf in the corner, and a desk beside that. The dark hardwood floor reflected the light gently, making the room calm and somewhat serene. A single door led to a walk in closet, and on the other side a door to an en suite bathroom. The two friends sat in silence for a while.
"I love it when you come over." Myra finally replied, smiling. "Ever since I got separated from my sister I've been awful lonely... Being with a foster family sucks." She added.
"Only a few more years, and you'll be in college. You could get out of here and see your sis again." Enzo said, matter-of-factly.
"Come on, I'm only fourteen." The girl retorted.
Enzo was two years older than her, the same age as her sister, sixteen. Myra had met him in school, when he found her in the hallway playing Smash Bros. on her 3DS, on her own. He joined her, and they quickly became good friends.
"That's still only like, five years, right?" In response, Myra punched him.
"Ow!" Enzo exclaimed sarcastically. He then proceeded to stand up, and padded to the door where his black and red backpack was leaned up against the wall. Pushing aside a Pokéball keychain, he unzipped it. Enzo reached his hand into the bag and pulled out a 2DS in its case.
The young boy smiled and slumped down on the couch next to the closet. It was set into the wall beneath another window, and on either side was a small square table decorated with figurines, game cartridges, and a lamp each. Farther to either side was a bookshelf, and beside the bookshelf on Enzo's left was the door to the closet.
Myra joined her friend, opening up her purple 3DS. Laying open on her bed was her carrying case, inside it was an NFC adapter. It allowed her to use Amiibo without needing the new version of the 3DS. However, there was one problem. She didn't own an Amiibo. But she sure wanted one!
Enzo and Myra joined a Smash Bros. match together, and played online. Myra loved competing in tournaments and playing with people from all over the world. It had taken her forever, but she'd gotten pretty good.
"Together or against?" Enzo asked his friend, determining whether they wanted to be a team or do a free for all. Myra considered for a bit.
"Who're you using?" She asked, casting Enzo a cheeky glance.
Enzo cleared his throat, and in a mock 'proper' voice, he announced: "Today, Smash champion Enzo will be fighting with the marvelous Samus!"
Myra giggled at his display, and looked down at her 3DS as the Smash announcer declared Enzo's fighter as he selected her.
Samus happened to be Enzo's main, and although she didn't want to go up against that, Myra wanted to see how her skills with her main were doing.
"Fine. We'll go against. 4 man free for all." Myra stated, looking sure of herself. With a grin, she selected her best character: Link.
Enzo proceeded to the next screen, where they searched for a match. Mere minutes later, they found themselves facing a Fox from Britain and a Pit from the US.
"This'll be a breeze." Myra scoffed, righting herself on the bench.
Enzo raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?"
But she had no time to answer. The announcer started.
Three. Myra brushed her short golden brown hair out of her face.
Two. Enzo righted his grip on the oddly shaped red 2DS.
One. Myra got her bearings on the stage. Go!
Immediately the battle exploded. With zero percent and no lost stocks, obviously, Myra dove right into the fray. She executed a grab, down throw, up tilt combo, followed by a n-air, on the Fox. It stood no chance as Myra expertly navigated Link around the stage.
A minute passed. The gamer-girl stole a glance at the percent bars. Somehow, Myra had managed to avoid taking a lot of damage. Whoever was playing Pit, on the other hand, had racked up two-hundred percent.
Re-adjusting her grip, Myra smashed the stick to the right, causing Link to dash across the stage. Approaching the enemy, she hit A, causing him to perform a dash attack. During hitstun, Myra charged a side smash. When he came in range, she let go.
The first portion of the attack hit, sending the helpless Pit right into range of the next swing. However, a bright light flashed across the screen, connecting with Myra's target and producing a hitspark. With no delay, Pit had been flung out of bounds.
Myra focused on the other side of the stage. Samus was recovering from an attack, Enzo had stolen her kill! Face contorted in annoyance, she rushed at Enzo's character, pulling off a down-b and throwing the bomb at her.
Taking advantage of the hit, Myra went in for an up-tilt. However, Enzo was quick to read her movements and shielded the attack. When Link was recovering, he took the opportunity to jab-combo then side-b him off the stage. Myra growled.
She had one stock left. Enzo killed the opposing Fox, leaving just him and her. Letting out a mock battlecry, Myra began by pelting Enzo with projectiles, then pushed the joystick, causing Link to break into a dash once more.
Enzo hit the block button, but Myra anticipated it. She halted, then rolled behind Samus. Setting up a side smash, she waited and charged until Enzo dropped the shield, then released the button. One, two, out.
Myra had won.
"Ha! We did it!" Myra yelped, jumping up and punching her fist in the air.
"We?" Enzo asked.
"Link and I." Myra clarified. Enzo just rolled his eyes.
Moments later, he got up, shut down his 2DS, and wandered back to his bag. He hastily shoved the device inside, and pulled something else out. It was a cardboard box.
Myra tilted her head in confusion. "What's that?"
Enzo grinned mischievously. "Why don't you find out?" He proceeded to hand his friend the box, and sat down beside her.
The young girl tore open the cardboard with little to no grace. Inside was blank white paper. Pushing it aside, she reached her hand in and wrapped her fingers around the gift. What she felt was oddly shaped, considering she had no clue what it could be.
Shutting her eyes tight, wanting a surprise, Myra pulled the gift out. Enzo laughed at her display. Excitedly, she opened her eyes to see what she had, and gasped.
Myra looked down at the figure in her hand. Staring back up at her was an Amiibo figure of Link. "Enzo! Thank you so much!" She flung her arms around her friend, nearly throwing the Amiibo across the room in the process, but kept it in her tight grip.
"Myra, you're choking me." Enzo said, pushing her away. "But look!" He then reached into his pocket, and pulled out an Amiibo of his own. Samus.
The gamer girl squeed. "We can train them together!" She exclaimed. But Enzo shook his head.
"Maybe later, I have to get going. The dog won't feed itself." He explained, dropping his Samus into his bag and zipping it up. Enzo swung the backpack onto one shoulder, and turned to look at Myra. "I'll see you around."
Myra smiled. "See you!"
Enzo opened the door, exited, and closed it again. Myra trusted him to lead himself out of the house. But as she watched him leave, something began nagging her in the back of her mind. Something was off.
Something was about to change.
