Chapter Ten: Maze

~*Enzo's POV*~

Perhaps it was the chill of the air outside, or the light of the sun sneaking through the window. Whatever it was, it made me uncomfortable.

I sat in the foyer outside of the training gym; Samus was somewhere else in the room. She seemed more or less content looking around. However I was fairly bored.

"How long is he gonna take? I swear, if Barley doesn't come out in the next minute, I'll-"

The door to the room opened, and the bearded man stepped out.

"You were saying?" Samus commented cockily. In response I rolled my eyes and stood up, approaching Barley. He gave me a sheepish smile as I passed.

Apparently the circuits in the machines that controlled the training gym's landscape had fried, and he spent the last two days trying to fix it. All I wanted was to train. Christmas was in five days, and the Tourney two after that. If I wasn't ready, I could kiss my chances of going home goodbye.

Don't take me the wrong way, I love it here. Samus has proved to be an excellent voice of reason. But I did miss my family, and my lil' sis is probably worried. And frankly, that Aidan kid has proven himself to be a bit of a prick.

Lelouch and Aidan have been joining us in training, apparently as 'mentors' or 'role models'. They came from the Tiger group, which Lillian leads. I am a little curious to see who the other people in the group are.

I don't know my opinion on much of the others in the Elk group, though. Elaine is probably the strangest. The way she looks at me all the time, like I'm going to pull out a knife and stab someone in the back. Along with how overprotective she is of her Amiibo Partner; I'm sure Zelda could fend for herself.

It takes a while, but the other kids begin arriving. I'm stoked because Luke told us we'd be receiving our weapons to train with. I'd noticed a few of the veterans, like Lelouch, already had things like swords or guns or fighting gloves. It would take an idiot to not notice they represented the Mii classes. Does that mean I'll become a Mii? How would that work?

Lelouch and Dan entered first, shaking me from my thoughts. I waved to them out of courtesy. Each had their companions beside them. The two seemed to be relatively good friends, and in all honesty I was slightly jealous at how easily they got to know each other. Both Myra and Samus tell me that I'm too loud and bull-headed for my own good. But they grew to like me.

Next to enter was Jack, and his partner Lucina. The way he acted around her was hilarious; I don't really know how to describe it. I never really notice how he doesn't seem to have anyone else, though. For a moment I considered myself very lucky to have Myra. But I'm sure Jack will make friends with someone else eventually.

Aidan was the next one to join us. I shuffled to the side a little as he and Diddy Kong came to stand beside Lelouch. I don't know how the dark-haired boy gets along with Freckles here. I don't like him, at all. He even seems particularly rude to his Amiibo Partner.

My face lit up as I spotted Myra and Elaine come in. With an excuse to move away from the group, I ran up to them. "Myra! You're tardy again."

In response she narrowed her emerald eyes. "Hey, there is no 'tardy' here. We can come whenever we want, mister." She poked me on the shoulder as she passed, giving me a goofy look. I don't know how she could be so open-minded here.

I joined the others as Luke and Lucario wandered up to the control panel. It raised a little ways above the ground. These were the longest moments of my life. I wondered how they choose what class you get. Are you assigned one? Or will I get to choose? If we are allowed to pick, I contemplated which one I'd like. Personally, I think Brawler would be the most fun. However, maybe it would be better to train Samus if I'm a Gunner?

That only raised the question, where do the 'humans' come in? Am I supposed to fight Samus, as if training her like a normal Amiibo? Perhaps I just tell her stuff and give her pointers. So many questions, I was just bursting to ask them. But it had eventually become clear to me that not a lot of people are appreciative of my constant inquiries.

My thoughts were shoved to the back of my mind as the lights flicked off. For a moment I couldn't see a thing, everything was completely dark, aside from a small glow emanating from the control panel.

Around us were mechanical whirrs, and I'm sure the room was transforming. I was baffled as to why the lights were off. I'm not a tech genius, so I have no clue. Slowly, mutters rose from the small crowd. What confirmed I should be worried was that even some Characters sounded confused.

"Did something short-circuit?" I heard Jack ask, although the tone of voice made me inference he didn't know everything about what that meant.

"Maybe Barley didn't fix it properly..." Myra uttered beside me. I nodded, although I'm sure she couldn't see it.

Footsteps resounded from my right. I turned towards them. Suddenly, the tall figure of Luke was illuminated by Lucario's aura sphere, which he was holding it his hands.

That's when I remembered that Myra still didn't know what actually happened that night, when he claimed Lucario disappeared. It was an irritating habit of hers, she always was so naïve because of it; and by it, I mean her ability to ignore just about everything and go with whatever. The world could be falling apart around her, and she wouldn't care.

I turned my head to face Luke. The blueish glow of the aura sphere cast shadows across his face, making him eerily creepy in the dark gymnasium.

"I assure you, there has been no malfunction. This is today's training. Hidden in the maze are several different items, corresponding to the three classes. You will try to make it to one of them."

"What if we find a class we don't want?" Dan asked. Luke looked at him thoughtfully.

"You won't."

I was about to ask a question, but to my utter annoyance Lucario dispelled the aura sphere, and Luke disappeared. Soon a small, dim light flickered on above us. We were in a small room, surrounded by black stone walls. Just around me I could see Myra, Elaine, Dan, Jack, Lelouch, and Aidan. Each were searching around frantically for something...

Samus!! The name roared through my mind. She wasn't here. I had the base in my pocket, but she wasn't there. Where was she? Where were any of the Characters?

"Enzo, something's wrong." Myra sidled up to me, her emerald gaze shining with worry. "I can't find Link."

I looked over her concerned face. There was no use trying to comfort her. "Samus is gone too."

"Lucina? Where did you go!" Jack was a little ways down one of the five halls leaving the room. Farther down it I saw the light cut off, to complete darkness.

Everyone was panicking. Except for Aidan and Lelouch. They would know what's going on.

"Ay, you two. Tell us what the hell happened to our partners." I stalked up to them, roughly shoving Aidan, then glaring at the other. Both had their Amiibo Partner in figure form, visible in the pockets on the chest of their coats.

They looked to each other knowingly. That only made me angrier. "Tell us! Before I wipe that smirk off your face!" I surprised myself. I had never been this violent about matters concerning anyone, not even, admittedly, Myra. There was a tug at the back of my mind, telling me I need to find my companion as fast as possible.

"You have to find them. They'll be by your weapon."

That was answer enough. I stalked off, choosing a random hall. On the way I passed Elaine. She was crumpled on the ground, staring at the floor with blank eyes. Her hands were splayed out on the cold brick, steadying herself. It worried me a little, how attached she was to her companion.

But I shook my gaze away from her, continuing on my set path. Little did I know today would be a day like no other, where we would fully learn what it meant to be a Fighter.

~*~*~*~

Left, Left, Right, Left, Right, Right, Left. That was the path I took. For a while, ever since I left the room, I had no definite route. Nothing was telling me where to go, I just went. But it was getting me nowhere.

I had no sense of time. It could have been ten minutes; it could have been ten hours. I didn't know.

Tap, tap, tap, someone was walking this way. I jerked my head up. A shadow emerged from around the corner, projected by one of the scarcely place torches.

I didn't know whether to be afraid, or to approach whomever it was. The shadow wasn't any help, as the angle was awkward and made it stretch and warp.

Tap, tap, tap, the steps were getting closer. I guess I finally decided on staying rooted to the spot. I was slightly scared, but curious as to whom it was. Maybe this maze was full of monsters? No, I would have seen one.

Tap, and it stopped. I brought my eyes from the floor and to the person in front of me.

Luigi? "What the hell are you doing here? Where's Dan?"

The Character seemed to be just as confused as I, responding with a shrug. There were several options I had. One, I could offer to follow him; Two, I could just keep going on my own; or three, I could see if he'd join me.

I didn't have time to choose. The torch went out with a puff of smoke. Someone didn't want us meeting each other. The floor felt as if it fell from beneath me, and I tumbled into the abyss. All I heard was Dan's companion call my name, but that was cut off as I fell down. I only hoped Luigi could find Dan and get out of here soon.

Pain shot through my side as I hit the ground with a thump. Groaning, I pushed myself upright. I would have checked to see if anything was broken or bruised, but without light it was no use.

"Hello? Are you still there?" I called into the darkness, just in case the Character was still miraculously in front of me. There was no response. Expected.

It was still pitch black. I placed my hand on the wall, walking beside it and blindly winding through the maze. Still, nothing showed me where I should go. More time passed, and the maze began to get on my nerves. How could I expect anything to be done straightforward in this strange town? Of course Luke wasn't just going to let us choose our class like a trainer chooses their Pokémon starter.

"Hello! Hello?" I kept yelling, maybe someone could hear me. It was proven that the others, including the Characters, were in here with me. If one was nearby maybe I could find them. One more time. "Hello!"

"Enzo?"

My breath caught in my throat. I knew that voice.

"Enzo, is that you?"

I rushed towards the sound, not caring when I careened into walls or tripped over uneven stone. I just stood back up, and kept running, even though I could feel warm blood dripping down my legs from the impacts.

"Samus!" I called, hoping she'd respond so I could continue locating her.

It wasn't needed, however. I could see the glow from her visor and arm cannon as I rounded a corner. However I didn't stop running, until I embraced my companion in a tight hug. I don't know why. Why did I care? How come I was so worried? I'd never felt this before.

Moments passed as I searched for my words again. "I was so scared, I couldn't find you." Was all I could manage. But she seemed to understand. I did make a note to self; I was going to get back at whoever's idea this was.

My companion had to tilt her head a bit to look at my face; I was a little shorter than her.

"I found something, I think it's for you."

Finally. I'll figure out my class.

Hey! A POV! Since no one responded when I asked who's POV you wanted, I chose Enzo. I thought he was an interesting character, and it would be fun to write what that stubborn boy feels about what's going on. It'd be a shift from the passive Myra, so yeah! Don't forget to comment and vote if you liked it!
