Chapter Twenty-One: Stranger

A dark cloud loomed above Pocket, signalling what could be doom for the small, Character filled town. Competitors and their companions fought against the Subspace-like enemies that seemed almost to come from the sky. But one thing perplexed Myra. None of them were doppelgängers, like the one that took the form of Enzo.

Tears still dotted her face, but otherwise Myra chose to stay determined, knowing and accepting full well what that meant.

Acceptance... She rolled the word around in her mind. Myra of course knew the definition of it, she wasn't stupid. It was the concept that was new to her.

With a glance at her faithful companion, Link, she drew her sword, preparing to join the others in the fight.

In a strange twist of events however, the ominous cloud began to shiver, slowly swirling out of existence. Glancing around her, Myra could see the surprised faces of Characters and competitors, watching as the shadowy foes melted into the ground, and in a blink it was like nothing had even happened.

Anxious murmurs spread from mouth to mouth, and even those with a case of 'Silent Protagonist' shared confused looks of their own. Despite this meaning the town was safe, Myra still had a bad feeling about lurking at the pit of her stomach. Her companion knew it too; Pocket won't be safe for long.

~A while earlier...~

Enzo blinked up at the spinning clouds, their colour turning from a light grey to a deep black. Indeed, things did not seem good.

His fingers twitched nervously inside his gloves, and he looked to Samus for support as more other-worldly creatures rose from the ground. With a reassuring nod, his companion stared ahead at the coming battle. It would be like nothing the two had faced before, not a simple arena match where a knock-out meant returning to Amiibo form; defeat here could mean certain death.

Before Enzo had any time to react, a tar black creature rose from what appeared to be nothing between him and is companion. It had no defined form, reminding Enzo of monsters from children's books, with the black substance dripping from outstretched limbs.

It feinted towards Enzo, who fell back in surprise. Without loosing momentum, the beast began ensnaring his companion in its thick grasp.

Samus let out a growl of effort, instantly attempting to throw off the onslaught of Subspace-like material clutching her in its grip. Enzo responded by launching to his feet, poised to attack. But when he attempted to extend his arm, something caught his wrist, stopping his punch mid-blow.

Recognizing the sticky substance, Enzo expected to see another monstrous beast. Instead, when he managed to turn around, a very human looking woman met his silver gaze. The sight brought a gasp from Enzo.

The first thing that caught Enzo's eye was her streamlined face, every contour and muscle proudly stood on her body. Dark brown, almost black hair fell barely over her shoulders. Over her left eye sat a patch, moulded to fit the cavity in her skull. Her right arm was extended, fingers splayed in the air.

This human was controlling the strange Subspace.

She kept Enzo under tight bonds, and slowly forced him to walk closer, his wrist still held in the air like a disapproving parent walking him home. With one souless eye, she bore into him, practically studying every line and edge on his face and outfit. The look caused him to grimace.

Yanking stubbornly, Enzo tried to free himself of the shackles, to no avail. The woman let out a deep-throated chuckle, like bitter honey.

"Look what the cat dragged in," She drawled, her voice making Enzo's skin crawl. If anything before hadn't given it away, this woman was bad news.

"Let me go, you coward." Enzo snarled, struggling once more to free his wrist. She only laughed again.

A couple moments of silence allowed Enzo to glance over his shoulder, catching a glimpse of his companion nearly drowned in the black goo. The word almost seemed to light-hearted for such a maniacal substance.

"I don't believe you're in very much of a position to argue," The woman said, twisting her hand.

In that moment Enzo could only look on as his companion's armor actually flickered. The Subspace material had somehow managed to break Samus's practiced concentration, one that was nigh impossible to break. "How..?" Was all he could say.

But the woman did not stop there. A pained yelp escaped Enzo's companion. He caught on before anything else could happen. "Stop, you've made your point!" He growled, eyes flashing.

An insane grin spread across her face. "Indeed, I have." She released the tension on Enzo's companion, but still kept the grip strong enough to break her focus on the armour.

Enzo returned his gaze to the woman, as sounds of battle reigned the rest of the field. "What do you want with me?"

"A mole," She said, matter-of-factly.

"A what?"

"A spy, Enzo. A traitor."

That made Enzo laugh. "You know my name, so you should know I'm not going to betray my friends and family just because you asked. Not very nicely, might I add."

The bond around his wrist tightened, forcing him to hold back a whine. Within only a few seconds, he lost feeling in the hand. Out of ideas, he turned to Samus, hoping for help. But she only returned his lost gaze.

The stranger's eye flashed for a moment. "It appears a friend of yours is causing a bit of trouble..." She huffed, flicking her free hand, another monster rose from the ground. "It's a shame she doesn't know that my master can hear her telepathic communications with her companion. Link, is it?" With another movement of the wrist, the summoned creature lumbered off with a laboured gait.

Done with the stalling, the woman straightened the cuffs of her sleeves and spoke up. "Well, then, little boy? What'll it be, work for me, or lose your companion?" She drawled. A tendril of the black substance snaked its way up Enzo's arm, reaching for his head threateningly.

However, Enzo wasn't really listening. Telepathic... communication? He asked himself. What on earth did this lunatic mean by 'telepathic communication', between Myra and Link?

A sharp cry from Samus made Enzo snap back to attention. He narrowed his eyes, and yelped. "Fine!"

That made the stranger loosen her grip. "How do I know you're not going to turn around and betray me?" She said, almost in a mock whine.

Enzo cursed his luck. Of course his actions were that predictable. He looked on as the woman mused to herself with a low hum. "How about I promise you something."

"What?" Enzo muttered, surely the death of his companion was promise enough.

"The power to bring your sister back."

Enzo inhaled sharply. "How did you know!?" He demanded, trying to run at her before being promptly held back by his bonds. "Not even Myra knows."

"I have a way of finding these things out." The woman cooed.

A mental disorder had taken his sister's life. It hurt him so much; he'd chosen to lie about her to everyone else. Even to his closest friends. His face contorted in pain as he remembered his father telling him what had happened, how she'd killed herself. So hard he'd tried to convince himself she's still alive. If a place like Pocket could exist, surely there's a way he could bring her back.

And that's what this woman was promising him.

"You could bring her back..?" Enzo finally panted. He was met with a curt nod, and sly smile.

"Enzo, don't listen to her." Samus called to him, but he ignored her.

He stood up straight, silver eyes appearing duller. "What do you need me to do?"

Two days late. Whoops. Any hoo, looks like Enzo's gotten himself into something. Who is this mysterious stranger? Can she actually resurrect Enzo's sister? Put your thoughts in the comments!
