Alone
I've always been alone here, trapped within this cage of glass. I know I cannot escape, for my only escape is through death. My life is one of solitude, of light and dark, for I am trapped. Trapped as a lightbulb.
That may not make sense, so let me explain. I am Lumia, a light fairy. When I was born, stupid humans stuffed me in glass bulb and attached wires to my wings. Then they closed the entrance with an impenetrable wall of metal. I am forced to glow when little shocks travel into my wings. As I said, I am alone, trapped, my only escape through death.
Recently, the humans beneath me have been fighting, especially the older girl. I feel that she and I may be similar, if not exactly the same. I drifted to sleep, thinking about her.
ZAP! I woke suddenly as the switch was flipped, sending shocks throughout my body. Flaring my glow, I sighed.
"It's always just the same old thing: Fall asleep, be woken up by The Switch, glow, fall asleep," I muttered to myself. "Why always when I'm asleep, though?"
I heard a light knocking from outside my cell. Looking about wildly, I saw another light fairy waving at me. Must be new, I thought to myself. I waved back.
They tried to fly, but only exceeded in ripping their wing. The fairy doubled over in pain, and his light flickered. Soon, his light was out, but he was still alive. He fell to the bottom of the bulb, unconscious.
I cried, for this fairy was not even here a day, yet he was already gone, free from this horrible life. That fairy was definitely older, at least older than I was when forced into here. Somewhere inside of myself, I wished that I had been a struggler, even if it would mean that I would die.
I watched as a man unscrewed the bulb with the new fairy in it. He shook it a bit, then tossed it into a white tup covered with black plastic.
After that ordeal and my sadness was over, I watched the lives of the humans go on beneath me. The girl whom I felt a connection with was growing older, wiser, and talented. I listened to the music she made, on the wooden thingy with white and black things, and on a wooden thing with metal wires. I watched her study schoolwork and eat delicious looking food. One day she was dressed in strange clothes that I did not recognize. She hugged the older humans, and left. I never saw her again.
After the girl left, I felt myself starting to dim, going dark, losing the freedom I had gained by watching her. My connection, seeing myself in her, was all that had kept me going these ten long years. Slowly, I became weaker, my glow dimming, until one day. My glow was snuffed.
I closed my eyes, knowing it would be the last time I did so. I drifted off into a dark world, yet it was a free world.
