Chapter 12
Natsha showed up at Lorena’s apartment door at midnight after finishing work. She frantically pressed the doorbell even though it was already the middle of the night. The person inside had, of course, been asleep for a long time, but the ringing drove her mad and forced her out of bed. Lorena was extremely sensitive to noise.
She yanked the door open with a dark expression. Lorena was this close to beating up whoever had ruined her sleep. What met her eyes was Natsha’s face, her foundation still not removed. The corner of Lorena’s eye twitched. Without hesitation, she lashed out with a kick.
Natsha struggled but still managed to grab her leg before she could end up sprawled on the floor once again. One time was more than enough!
“Let go of my leg!” Lorena had to hop on one foot while Natsha refused to release her. “YOU PSYCHO!”
She shouted at the top of her lungs, thrashing nonstop. The result was both of them tumbling onto the floor. Lorena was truly furious. In the middle of the night, just as she was deep in sleep, some lunatic had been ringing her doorbell like it was about to break.
Both of their backs ached from the fall. Her lower back hadn’t been in great shape lately to begin with.
Before she could recover and beat Natsha up properly, Natsha had already wrapped her in a tight hold. Her arms locked Lorena’s hands in place, and her legs tangled tightly around Lorena’s.
Lorena could only lie there helplessly and breathe.
“What kind of mess are you making this time?” She closed her eyes, almost giving up, and said.
“Marry me!” Natsha lifted her head, looking at her calmly as she spoke.
The heat in Lorena’s blood flared up instantly.
“If you’re crazy, go to a hospital!” She really wanted to smack that woman’s face, but in their current position, that was impossible. “Marriage, my ass. Get away from me!”
“Are you planning to let the kid grow up without a mother?” She said, pressing her cheek tightly against Lorena’s shoulder.
“What kid?” Lorena replied curtly.
“What other kid would there be?” Natsha suddenly lifted her head, her face full of confusion.
Lorena ground her teeth. She wanted to gouge those eyes out.
“I’m joking!” Natsha finally said when she saw Lorena breathing as if her lungs were about to explode.
A joke is only a joke when everyone laughs. If she’s the only one laughing, then it’s NOT A JOKE!!!!
“I’m serious! Are you really going to let the kid not have a mother?” Natsha lowered her voice and asked.
“Oh, so I’m the father then?” Lorena sneered mockingly.
Natsha clicked her tongue. Of course Lorena knew exactly what she meant. But how Lorena chose to interpret it was still her right.
“What I mean is… don’t you want the child to have both parents?” She asked.
Lorena looked at her with an indifferent expression.
“Are you dying or something?”
Natsha frowned and shook her head.
“Are you planning to abandon 'it'?”
Natsha looked at her as if she had just been deeply insulted.
“Of course not.”
“Then who’s missing?” Lorena asked roughly.
Natsha let out a breath. She shifted her position so Lorena’s eyes could meet hers. They rarely looked at each other face-to-face in an atmosphere like this. Because whenever they did, it would turn into a serious conversation.
Even though she had been released, Lorena remained lying there, letting the other woman rest an arm lightly over her waist. They lay in the same position, each using their own arm as a pillow.
One in a dark hoodie and simple sweatpants. The other in a high-slit evening gown, the fabric of her dress spread across the floor. It didn’t match at all. But look at them. They were still there, together.
“Lorena Schuett, you know that for more than ten years, I’ve only ever been with you, right?” She asked softly.
Lorena didn’t look at her.
“As if anyone would know what you’re really like.”
“Look at me, Lorena!” Natsha said, her eyes still waiting for a response.
Lorena bit the inside of her cheek. She lifted her gaze and looked at her. Natsha’s dark eyes were truly beautiful. What the public said wasn’t entirely flattery. Somewhere in it, most of it was still the truth.
“You know, don’t you?” The lines of her face softened. Lorena wasn’t sure if she was imagining it.
“Mm…” She simply gave a small nod.
“I’ve said this to you before… but I still want to say it again. Not just once, but many more times.” Natsha’s lips moved, her words carrying not a trace of falsehood.
“I love you! Every day… it’s just a little more that I love you.” It took Natsha ten years to say it out loud, but her actions had formed from the very first day.
Lorena blinked a few times, then shifted her gaze away to somewhere else.
Natsha reached out, searching for the small, expensive handbag lying alone on the floor. She opened it, rummaged through, then grasped something in her hand.
“I was planning to use this to propose to you.” She held out a silver chain strung with a red ruby ring in front of Lorena. “But if you don’t like marriage, then just treat it as a piece of jewelry. You can wear it if you want, or not wear it if you don’t.”
Natsha took her hand and placed the chain into her palm. It seemed she had come to understand a little more about this alpha’s personality. More specifically, her alpha.
“When you found out… did you panic?” Natsha asked, carefully avoiding touching any “alpha” nerves.
“Of course not!” Lorena blurted out instinctively. After seeing the lack of hostility in Natsha’s eyes, she became aware of the situation.
“A little…” She whispered.
“Were you not certain about me, so you didn’t call?” Natsha didn’t beat around the bush. She truly wanted to know what this alpha had been thinking all along.
Lorena bit the inside of her cheek. A low hum left her throat.
“Yeah…”
“Can I know the reason?” Natsha asked softly.
Lorena let out a sigh and lay on her back, her hands resting at her sides.
“I don’t even know you as well as that Emily girl does!”
What she said couldn’t be denied. In more than ten years of knowing each other, aside from what Natsha allowed the public to see and those nights at Lorena’s private apartment, what else did she really know about her?
“I don’t even know exactly what you are!” The question that had been buried deep beneath layers of soil was finally dug up.
Natsha looked at her. Perhaps this was the first time they had talked this much.
“Tonight, whatever you want to know about me, I’ll answer.” She replied straightforwardly to Lorena’s uncertainty. If the foundation had never been solid, then she would start rebuilding a solid one from the beginning.
“You…” Lorena looked into Natsha’s eyes and asked. “… what exactly are you?”
“Have you ever heard of an enigma?” She asked.
“Isn’t an enigma supposed to be even more dominant than an alpha?” Lorena had practically turned the university library upside down because of one Natsha Taechamongkalapiwat, who existed outside the genders Lorena Schuett knew. “You don’t look any different from an omega.”
Natsha raised one eyebrow. Lorena sensed something was off and cleared her throat, choosing not to continue.
“Every individual is different. Enigmas are the same.” She said. “I wear dresses because I like to. As for whether I’m dominant or not…” Natsha looked her up and down, then curved her lips slightly. “… wouldn’t you know best?”
Natsha moved closer, her expression far from proper. Lorena crossed her arms over her chest.
“H... hey, 'it' is still there...” Before she could finish, a fleeting kiss landed on her lips. After getting what she wanted, Natsha leaned back, propping her head on her hand and raising a brow at her.
Lorena rolled her eyes.
They talked the entire night. With the stamina of an alpha and an enigma, staying awake for one night was well within their limits.
