something absolutely crazy

"Tanya Rideout here."

"Tanya. This is Perry Harris."

Tanya turned away from her laptop and put her cellphone on speaker.

"Perry. I have been waiting for your call. Please tell me that you have some good news."

"Well a little of both, Tanya."

"Aw, fuck," Tanya sighed.

"Good news first."

"Well the good news is that we have managed to pull together enough people for you. Twenty in all. Enough to fill all your requirements, for now."

A huge smile came to Tanya's face.

"That's great, Perry. How soon can we get them here and working?"

"Well, we can have the crews there over the next couple days, but we have a bigger problem."

"Oh. So here comes the bad news."

"My buddy that supplied the site accommodations, sold his company yesterday."

Tanya took a deep breath.

"Let me guess. Jackson Lamont?"

"Well, he didn't say, for sure, but if I were a betting man, I would say that is your best bet."

"That Bastard. Can we get them anywhere else?"

"There is a company in Gander, but there's are all on site and there are a couple more in St. John's, but it will take a week to get them here and they will be expensive."

"Fuck."

"So what do you want to do?"

"Let me make a few calls, Perry and I will get back to you."

"Talk soon, then."

Tanya ended the call and sat back in her chair.

"Fuck."

"Youse sounds troubled, tomcod."

Tanya's eyes opened wide and a huge smile came to her face.

"Nanny Rideout."

She got up from her chair and hugged her great-grandmother's spirit.

"Its been so long."

"Sit down, tomcod and talk to me. Youse looks stressed to 'ell and back."

Tanya sat back on her chair.

"Nanny, this job is gonna make me an old woman before I am twenty."

Nanny Rideout sat on a kitchen chair near Tanya.

"Tomcod, youse needs to sit back, takes a deep breat' and relax fer a while. Maybe git out of da Bay fer a couple days."

"Don't have time. Especially not now. The shit just hit the fan again."

Nanny Rideout laughed.

"Youse certainly 'as da colourful language, dere tomcod. But youse still needs to bes takin' it a little easy. Why don'ts youse and dat young fella of yours goes away for a few days?

Da shit will bes still 'ittin' da fan when youse gits back."

Tanya looked shocked.

"Nanny Rideout. Are you suggesting Ise takes my boyfriend off on a wild romp."

The elderly spirit rolled her eyes.

"Ise sayin' dat youse shud goes away from 'ere fer a couple day and git to know yer future 'usband.

And ifin its gits a little wild, den whatever will bes, will bes."

Tanya laughed.

"I loves you Nanny Rideout, but Ise don't think I can do that right now."

"Ise don't tink youse can nots do it. Youse all stressed out. Youse need to relax."

Tanya stared at her grandmother for a moment. She was certainly stressed and she could use a break. And the latest round of troubles were stretching her patience even thinner.

"Its will all bese 'ere when youse gits back. Jest stop tinkin' 'bout it. Git in dat big truck of yours, go and grab dat young man and go. Come back in a few day and Ise can be sure dat youse will feels better."

Tanya picked up her cellphone and called Perry. She asked him to try and find trailers for the crews and told him to contact Lindsay with any news.

She then called Lindsay, as she threw a few things in an overnight bag, as she talked, and informed her that she was grabbing Quinton and taking off for a few days. Lindsay, excitedly,  said she would have a bag packed for Quinton, by the time she arrived.

"Thank youse, Nanny Rideout," Tanya smiled, as she hurried through the cottage and outside.

She started her truck and drove to Lindsay's house to get Quinton's bag and after assuring Lindsay she would be gentle with her little boy, Tanya drove to the garage and walked inside.

Quinton was talking to Kenny Johnstone.

A huge smile came to his face when he saw Tanya.

"Hey."

Tanya walked to him and took his hand.

"Come on. Get your coat on."

"What? But ..."

Tanya turned to him.

"But what?"

"I am working, Tanya."

Tanya looked to the office where Ken Johnstone was sitting.

"Hey Ken?"

Ken walked out of the office.

"Hey Tanya. How can I help you?"

"Just wanted to tell you that I am stealing Quinton for a couple days."

Ken laughed.

"Should I ask?"

Tanya shook her head. She looked at Quinton, who was still standing next to her.

"Well? What are you waiting for? Get your coat on."

Quinton looked at Ken.

"Best listen to yer boss, Quinton."

Quinton smiled and ran to get his coat.

Tanya let out a long sigh.

"I have a lot of work to do with that one," she laughed.

She winked at Ken.

"But it will be fun."

Quinton ran to Tanya's side.

"I'm ready."

Tanya took his hand.

"Come on. Let's get out of here."

A moment later, they were in the Tanya's truck and Tanya pulled off the parking lot, onto the cobblestone road, that led out of the Bay.

"Where are we going?"

Tanya could hear the nervousness and excitement in his voice. She took a quick look sideways and smiled at him.

"We are going for a little trip. I need to get to know my future husband."

She took hold of Quinton's hand and squeezed slightly.

Just over three hours later, the truck pulled on the parking lot of Sinbads Hotel in Gander.

Tanya parked the truck.

"You get the bags and I will get us a room."

When Quinton walked to the desk, Tanya was signing the registration card.

"I got us the suite on the top floor."

"How long will you be staying?" The desk clerk inquired.

"At least two nights, maybe three."

She looked at Quinton and smiled.

"Let's make it three."

She passed the registration card to the young woman on the front dest.

"You have room service?"

She nodded.

"Until eleven at night, but there are plenty of takeouts here in town that will deliver, after that."

"You have a wet bar, in the suite?"

The woman nodded.

"But it is so expensive. If you wants, I get get you what you want from the bar. A lot cheaper."

Tanya nodded.

"A dozen beer, some nice red wine, couple bottles and a couple bottles of your best champagne."

"When would you like it?"

"ASAP," Tanya smiled, "and then we do not want to be disturbed."

She winked at the desk clerk.

"You go on to your room."

She passed the card key to Tanya, winking back at her.

"I will have your order there in ten minutes."

"Thank you."

Tanya turned to Quinton.

"You ready?"

Quinton smiled nervously.

Tanya pulled his head down gently and kissed his lips.

"Relax my love."

"You 'ungry?"

Tanya shook her head.

"We will eat later. Right now, I just need to relax."

The two went to their suite on the top floor and after the beer, wine and champagne was delivered, Tanya put the 'Do Not Disturb' sign over the doorknob outside.

Quinton already had one of the bottles of champagne opened and two glasses poured. He passed one to Tanya.

"You look so beautiful."

Tanya kissed him gently, on the lips, and raise her champagne flute.

"Here's to us."

The two clinked glasses, entwined arms and awkwardly drank their champagne, laughing as they did.

"Looks easier when they does iy in da movies."

Tanya took the glass from Quinton, took his hand and led him to the bed.

"You nervous?"

Quinton nodded slightly.

"So am I," Tanya smiled.

She kissed Quinton gently, pulling him down on the bed, as she did so.

Tanya looked at the young man laying next to her and stroked his cheek.

"I love you."

"I love you," Quinton whispered.

The next morning, Tanya was standing in the window of the hotel room, looking out over the town of Gander.

She turned, as she heard Quinton move around in bed. A huge smile came to her face, as she looked at the young man and remembered the night before.

Though it had not been the magical moment that so many movies portray, it had been a wonderful experience and the more comfortable that Quinton became, the more wonderful the experience was.

Though neither were experienced, they had managed to find a comfortable place where both found their first times, to be far beyond the awkward stories they had heard from some of their friends.

By the time the two had fallen asleep, in each other's arms, both Tanya and Quinton were ecstatic and the only barrier that stopped them, was exhaustion and sleep.

Tanya had awaken at around 7am and she quietly got out of bed, put on coffee, showered and put on the housecoat, suppled by the hotel. She then stood in the window of the hotel room and watched the sun come up. As fate should have it, though it was winter, it was a beautiful cloudless morning.

She turned to the bed again, as Quinton moved again. She stood, staring into the face of the young man and al the feelings that her grandmother had told her about years before, came flooding into her.

She was only thirteen, when her Nanny Rideout had talked to her.

"Youse almost a woman now, tomcod."

Tanya laughed.

"I just turned thirteen, Nanny Rideout. I tink Ise 'as a long ways to go."

Nanny Rideout took one of Tanya's hands in hers.

"No. 'ere in da Bay, da womens grows up fast. Da men takes fer ever, but dey comes around."

Tanya shook her head.

"There be no mens here. The boys are all yucky."

Nanny Rideout laughed and patted her hand.

"Ise knows, tomcod. But dey bes jest boys yet, but dey will grows up and one of dem little boys will bes your man fer life."

Tanya shook her head.

"No way. Ise not staying 'ere in da Bay. Ise wants to goes to university and move to the mainland."

"And why is that, tomcod?"

"Ise been lookin' on da internet, Nanny and dere bes so many things Ise can do. Ise don't want to be stuck 'ere in da Bay.

Ise hears Mommy cryin' sometimes at night. She bes sad dat Daddy 'as to go away fer work and dat so many people are talkin' about leavin' da Bay. Ise heard some say dat one day, da Bay might not even bes here."

"And whose bes talkin' like dat?"

"I heard Daddy talking to Poppy Clayt and Nanny Louise. 'e says dat dere bes people talkin' about movin' all da people of da Bay and putting dem in other towns and cities."

Tanya's great-grandmother patted her hand, again.

"Dat all bes talk, tomcod. And it bes talk dat youse not need to be hearin'.

Youse jest concentrate on bein' a young woman and prepare yourself for your connection."

"My connection?"

Nanny Rideout nodded.

"All da women of da Bay gits a connection to one of da men of da Bay. It jest bes da way of da Bay."

"Yuk," Tanya snapped, licking her tongue out.

"All da boys 'ere in da Bay are creepy."

Nanny Rideout laughed.

"Well, tomcod, all mens bes like dat when dey bes younger. But as sure as Ise bes sitting 'ere, youse will feel a connection wit one of the boys."

Clayton Rideout walked into the room.

"Now mudder, don't bes fillin' Tanya's 'ead wit dem old wives-tales."

"Deys not bes wives-tales," Nanny Rideout snapped back.

"Youse wouldn't never found Louise, ifin she 'adn't felt da connection."

Clayton rolled his eyes.

"Come on Tanya. Dey bes ready wit yer cake now."

Tanya jumped to her feet and kissed her great-grandmother.

"Thank youse Nanny."

Tanya sipped her coffee and turned back to the window.

It was later that year that her beloved great-grandmother had a massive heart attack and died.

Tanya did not see her again, until she finally felt the connection, on her fifteenth birthday.

"Morning."

Tanya turned to see Quinton, laying in bed, smiling at her.

She walked to the bed, put the coffee on the night table and lay by his side.

"Morning handsome," she smiled, kissing him gently.

Quinton rolled her over on top of him, kissing her passionately.

Tanya took a deep breath.

Quinton might not have had much experience, but he was a willing student and learning fast.

Quinton was sitting in the restaurant, when Tanya walked in.

"There youse are. Ise thought youse left me."

Tanya kissed him and sat down.

"No, sweetie. I jest wanted to quickly check me e-mails."

"Problems?"

Tanya shook her head, as the waitress filled her coffee cup.

"Are you ready to order?"

Tanya nodded, as she quickly opened the menu.

"I'll have the steak and eggs breakfast, with sour dough toast and orange juice."

Quinton nodded.

"I'll have the same."

The waitress took the menus and left.

Tanya stared at Quinton, who had suddenly become very quiet.

"What's wrong?"

"Ise just hopes I were okay."

Tanya took one of his hands in hers.

"You were fantastic, my love."

Quinton rolled his eyes.

"Ise knows youse jest sayin' dat."

Tanya shook her head.

"Sweetie, it were my first time too and if what we felt last night was the way it should be, then Ise will bes a happy woman."

She smirked, as she sipped her coffee.

"But Ise knows dat as time goes by, we will both get better."

"I love you," Quinton shyly whispered, looking away from Tanya.

Tanya put her hand on his face and turned his head to her.

"When youse says that to me, I wants youse looking into my eyes."

"I love you, Tanya."

Tanya smiled.

"That's better."

She kissed Quinton gently.

"I love you too."

Quinton suddenly felt very relaxed.

"So what do youse wants to so today?"

"You have anything in mind?"

Quinton smirked, as he sipped his coffee.

"Typical man," Tanya sighed.

"We will have lots of time for that," Tanya assured him.

She stared at Quinton for a moment and a realization swept over her like a wave.

"Youse okay, Tanya?"

Tanya smiled and nodded.

"Never been better, my love."

She stared for another moment and then said, "Want to do something absolutely crazy?"

"What do youse 'ave in mind?"

The waitress arrived with their breakfast.

Tanya thanked her and cut off the edge of her steak. She looked at Quinton.

"I have an idea," she smiled, as she put the steak in her mouth.
