Chapter 1
I lean my head against the back of the plane seats trying to get some rest before arriving home after graduation. My education had been in the forefront all of my life and when I finally got there it wasn't as good as everyone had said. It was exhausting, not to mention how hard it was being away from my family and best friend. I rushed home as quick as I could at the sound of news. Of course Haydee, my little sister wouldn't say what it was over the phone, something to do with superstitions. So here I am surrounded by room hogging, overweight people to my left, but a beautiful view of the land below to my right. Being away for a whole seven years in the big apple getting my degree in Physical Therapy was no easy task.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Said the burley gentleman with a beard and pot belly like Santa Clause. I jerk my head in his direction causing a bout of dizziness to come my way. "You seem deep in thought young lady."
"I'm on my way back home for the first time in a while." I sigh while saying the last part.
"Why do I sense some apprehension in this trip home?" He gave me a knowing look.
"Because my family is a little...cold towards me." I said thoughtfully.
"Ah, yes I understand. I'm sure it will be fine, just keep trying." He winked at me, not in a provocative way but a friendly, encouraging way. I shut my eyes for a brief moment and then just decide to take a nap and dream of what lay ahead of me once I get off this plane.
I wake up to the voice of the obnoxious flight attendant screeching into the mic reminding us that our landing was upcoming. I take my time gathering the things I had brung along with me such as my Mp3 player, headphones, and pillow. I got a much needed nap, considering I'd been at the airport since five thirty in the morning because my flight left at nine fifteen and I wanted to be there early for security, baggage claim, and good seats. I stand to get my carry on, careful not to wake up the Santa on my left. The plane abruptly decided to hit turbulence in that moment. I landed roughly back in my seat still lacking my carry on I take a peak at the mystery man to see that he is still counting sheep. I try a second time with more success than the last. I sit back down pleased with my vintage bag in hand. The attendant comes back on air to announce that landing was but a mere ten minutes away and to expect some minor turbulence. I don't know whether to be excited that I'm finally getting off the plane or nauseous over my upcoming fate. I take a deep breath to calm my tremorous heart.
A few minutes later I'm walking down the plane isle preparing for my ever awaiting departure. If I had it my way I would have just stayed on the plane until I got back to New York somehow. The only difficulty is that I don't have a place to live or any other essentials to self preservation. My life was on some moving truck making its way from the big apple down to a small beach town in South Carolina. I sense I'm forgetting something, seconds later I realize it wasn't something, it was someone. I turn around and push through the clouds of people to reach the man I had sat with the entire flight. I see him still in his seat waiting for the commotion to clear, something I should have thought of before.
"Sir, I wanted to say thank you and it was nice meeting you." I gave him a wide smile to which he returned easily.
"The pleasure is all mine Miss. You take care of yourself and we'll be in touch." He took my hand and kissed the top of my knuckles. Confused I was about to ask him what he meant but the people behind me pushed me foreword, I had no choice but to continue on with the group of impatient baboons.
"The name is Calum Walters." He shouts in his thick New Jersey accent.
"Eveleigh Connors, it's been a pleasure." I waved at him and walked forward until I met the doors to my new adventure.
I'm back South Carolina!

After gathering my bags I call a cab to come and pick me up considering my sister hadn't mentioned anything about getting me. I make my way down the escalators picking at my fingernails, a nervous habit I had mastered over my twenty five years. I glance up to see how close I am to stepping off, I still have a few more seconds before gathering my bags. I take my time, feeling extra empowered to take a glance at the surrounding people to be met with a set of eyes I didn't expect to meet.
Nathan Summers, my best friend since I was three and dream guy since I was a high school graduate. I almost burst into tears right then and there. He looks different. Older and stronger. Three years really changed him, the last time seeing him being at his graduation. He started college a year before I had, him being a year older. He graduated at the community college, his major, Business. He looks powerful and important with a navy blue suit but the moment his eye's meet mine the childish fervor came back instantly. Before I know it, I'm pushing the people that were rushing me minutes before out of the way, totally forgetting my bags on the escalators. I run over to him and wrap my legs around his waist, hugging him for all I'm worth. His manly scent engulfs my senses and I can't help but sigh. I missed him so much.
"Wow now Evie, as much as I would like to, we can't stay like this forever. Your bags are causing some congestion." At first I don't catch what he's saying, his voice has gotten deeper if that is possible. I give him a funny look and he repeats himself. I nod and unwrap myself from him. Straightening out my outfit on the way I turn around to gather my things. Before I make it though Nathan is on top of it, loading all of my bags onto one arm while wrapping his other around me for a short moment.
"I missed you too." He whispers. I giggled like I had all those years back, a laugh reserved only for him. I reached up and kissed his cheek and he pulls back with a smirk.
"Now Evie I'm a taken man now, no funny business." The smile that was once prominent on my face quickly disappeared.
"What's with the shocked look? Didn't you think this stud would settle down?" He let out a laugh that was enough to churn my insides and send shock throughout my entire body, head to toe.
"No, nothing like that." I blink to keep the tears at bay. Of course he would have found a girl to settle down with, and of course it wouldn't be me. He didn't even know I was whole heartedly in love with him for more then ten years when I was being honest with myself. I thought that moving away would help, and I could move on but now, I quickly see it hadn't worked as well as I had planned. I got my tears under control and looked back up into his beautiful graphite grey orbs in hopes to find the truth to all of my unanswered questions. I pick the first question with a lead.
"So who's the lucky girl?" I try to keep my voice from cracking.
"Your sister."
