Chapter XXII
Richard rolled gingerly onto his side to look at John who was busy rummaging through an old wooden desk in what must have been the old man's' office.
"Tate's office..." He started.
"My Tate... not yours... when I see your Tate, I'm going to kill the murdering bastard!" John interrupted angrily.
"... but why are we here?" Richard asked.
"We're here because Williams dead. He came to me, trusted me to help him and now he's dead. He must have had a plan... he must have left something here, some clue as to what the hell we're supposed to do to stop your Tate from killing us all!
He slammed the desk drawer shut and stormed from the room.
Emmeline put her hand on Richard's arm and helped him slowly to a sitting position. "He's just upset Richard..."
"I know, so am I." Richard's head ached horribly. He reached back and found a large lump at the base of his skull.
"Yup, it's a doozey," Emmeline commiserated. "Been there done that, but at least your nose stopped bleeding." She handed him a bag of ice.
Richard looked down, his shirt was covered in dark blood. He pressed the ice pack to his head and winced.
From his new vantage point he could take in the whole room. Dark wood paneling was the motif and books lined the walls. Tate's desk was large and very old with an ornate brass lamp, dark green blotter and standing pen set on top. Behind the desk was a large painting of a beautiful nude Rubenesque woman being attended by Angels. A colorful tapestry, of horses and men in battle adorned the opposing wall. Old dusty pieces of furniture, like the couch they sat upon, were scattered around the room comfortably. Despite the dust everything was neat and tidy, including the three white boards placed equidistance apart to the left of his desk and covered in neat equations.
Richard put the ice down on the arm of the sofa and rose carefully, despite Emmeline's protests, to approach the boards. He stared at the rows of numbers and symbols, lost in thought.
Emmeline came up behind him quietly.
"Amazing," she ventured.
"He's a genius..." Richard answered sadly.
"He was a genius."
Richard and Emmeline turned at the sound of John's voice. He had come back into the room quietly with Flynn by his side. The soldier was back in her armor and holding her helmet which seemed to have been repaired.
Richard looked confused, so John continued. "He was brilliant, but now he's dead, or did you forget?"
"No, of course not, I just meant..." Richard started.
"Doesn't matter," John snapped cutting him off. "This isn't his work anyway, William was a genius but this is just too advanced. It's way beyond anything I've seen before."
Richard swayed slightly and Emmeline took hold of his arm to steady him. He blinked rapidly to clear his vision which had begun to dim again.
"I need to sit down." He said taking a tentative step toward the sofa.
"Sorry about that Mr. Crane," Ventured Flynn, "I was just..."
Richard cut her off, "doing your job. I know, forget about it."
With Emmeline's help he managed to get to the sofa and leaned back with his eyes closed as the world spun inside his head. John stood staring at the white board thinking and Flynn took a seat on Tate's desk and fiddled with her helmet.
No one spoke and the silence stretched uncomfortably. Emmeline left the room and came back with a damp face cloth which she placed delicately on Richard's forehead.
"So, if that's not Professor Tates work then how did it get here?" Richard suddenly blurted, startling Emmeline.
"What?" snapped John, turning to stare at him with open contempt.
Richard went on unfazed, "you said that isn't his work, so how did it get on the board in his office?"
"It's his handwriting, just not his work, understand?" John explained speaking as if Richard was a small child.
Richard smiled calmly with his eyes still closed. "No, I don't understand. If it's not his work and it's as advanced as you say then how did it get there?"
"The goggles?" Flynn said suddenly.
John turned to look at her not comprehending. "What?"
"The goggles," Flynn repeated this time sounding more sure of herself. "He must have seen it through the goggles!"
The light bulb went off in John's brain and his eyes lit up with understanding. He smiled hugely and grabbed Flynn lifting her up off of the desk with great effort considering the weight of her body armor. He swung her around. "Of course! That's it!"
Richard removed the now warm cloth from his head and opened his eyes to stare at them. "What the hell are you people talking about? What goggles?"
Richard laughed and kissed Flynn on the cheek as he set her down. He turned to Emmeline, "You fill him in, I'll get the goggles from the car."
Emmeline set to the task of explaining what the goggles were to Richard and ten minutes later they were all taking turns look at William Tates other office in amazement.
"This is incredible," Richard exclaimed as he walked around the room with the goggle over his eyes, his aching head forgotten with the adrenaline rush of the new discovery.
"And you're sure that these goggles don't exist in your reality?" John asked for the third time.
Flynn jumped out of the way as Richard walked towards her, totally immersed in the other world. "Like I already told you, as far as I know, they don't..."
John smacked his fist into his palm enthusiastically. "So we just might have an advantage!"
Richard was back over by the white boards. He pulled up one side of the goggles ignoring the dizzying effect of looking at both realities at once. "Yes, he definitely got the equations using these things. Incredible!" he repeated enraptured.
Flynn, tapped him on the shoulder lightly. "Uh... you mind if I take a look Mr. Crane?" She asked quietly.
"Oh, of course," he answered, reluctantly removing the goggles and handing them to her.
She put them on and began moving around the room ignoring the others.
Emmeline looked up at the two men from her seat on the sofa. "So, what now?"
John answered, "We set a trap for Tate, of course. He doesn't know we can see him, so we wait until he comes back here and Richard opens the gateway for us to attack."
"Will that be enough? I mean he can't be doing all this by himself can he?" She asked nervously.
Richard crossed the room to sit next her and took her hand in his, "No, but if he's the brains behind it, then it's a good bet they can't use the device without him."
"Perfect, so we just need to take him by surprise and kill him." John growled.
"No, we have to take him alive."
The group turned to look incredulously at Emmeline.
"And why is that?" asked John.
Emmeline bit her lip and looked up at him defiantly. "As long as that machine is out there someone could use it... we need to get him to dismantle it... we have to convince him that what he is doing is wrong..."
"Uh... excuse me everyone," Flynn said from the other side of the room, breaking up the conversation. "Something is weird over here..."
John came over to join her and she handed him the goggles pointing. "The door's missing."
He put the goggles on a looked where she was indicating. Sure enough the door to the storage room at the back of Tates office didn't exist in the other dimension.
"That's odd..." John intoned, more to himself that the others. He had already walked around the outside of the building using the goggles and everything was exactly the same. The room must be there.
Richard came over and took a look for himself.
"What does it mean?" Flynn asked.
Richard took off the goggles and got out his phone. "Only one way to find out... Cindi, open a gateway." He demanded.
Yes – Richard... She replied.
The gateway sprang to life immediately and Richard stepped through. Flynn and John followed leaving Emmeline behind. She had removed her shoes and now jumped up trying to put them back on as she hopped towards the opening. She stumbled to her knees and had just managed to get back to her feet as the gateway closed in front of her.
"Dammit!"
