Chapter Six (Now)

THE WAITING PRINCIPLE.

"Mummy, hurry up now," Mofe whined for the umpeenth time, talking her pencil heeled foot on the ground rapidly, while dabbing beads of perspiration from her made up face.

"I am coming oh!" Her mother said and Mofe rolled her eyes. One of her cousins were getting married and they were late. Not just late by minutes, but late by more than an hour. At that rate, they would get to the church after the wedding had been conducted.

"Mummy please, there is no need for all that," Mofe said, referring to the extra makeup she was adding on her face. Mofe would be annoyed, but then she was already used to her mother. She was always running late, and it would be quite unusual if she was actually early.

"So you don't want your mum to look good?" Her mother asked in her dramatic fashion, and Mofe let her eyes run over her mother's elegant, floor length Ivory gown, which was tight at the upper body and only flared under her breasts, the fabric shone making her mom look like a star. In simple words, she looked beautiful.

Her mother had coupled the Ivory gown, with a pair of white heels, that had small rhinestones in the front, a small shiny clutch and a brown full wig, making her look twenty years younger than her sixty. Mofe felt so lucky that she actually looked the woman in front of her.

"Mom, you look good already, magnificent even, you are going to be the star of the party. You will even steal the show from the bride," Mofe told her mother truthfully and she smiled when her mother blushed a bit.

"Now can we go?" She asked, and her mother nodded, the both of them then made their way to their trusty cream Camry car.

As Mofe put the key into the ignition, she was reminded of the first day she drove a car, she had just turned twenty and she felt that she needed to learn how to drive. She smiled wistfully as she remembered how scared she was that day, how her hands had been shaking as she held the steering wheel, how it had felt so surreal to have a whole automobile under her control.

After that first time, she hit her mother's car about three times before she finally mastered the use of the car. And six years later, she was gliding through traffic like a pro.

They got to the venue of the wedding in one piece, by that time, the joining was already over, and the pastor was preaching on the many virtues needed for a successful marriage.

Mofe sat beside her mother on one of the pews, looking at the newly married couple, as the pastor talked on and on of the things that can strengthen a marriage.

Truth be told, Mofe didn't believe those things, at least not anymore, she didn't think the words of the pastors could be all that true since even pastors had failed marriages. She knew that even if one read all the marriage books one earth, and listened to all the sermons, that there was still a possibility of a failed marriage.

She looked at her cousin, and her brand new husband, she viewed how happy they looked, she truly hoped that their happiness would last.

After the preaching, Mofe went to congratulate her cousin, meeting several relatives on the way. The particularly nosy ones asked whether she was going to get married. As usual, she easily fended them off with excuses.

Her cousin, Isoken was truly the vision of a beautiful bride, her makeup was simple and flawless, the bronzer glistening against her light skin, she was wearing an exquisite white ball gown that was oh so regal, what completed her look was the huge smile that graced her lips.

"Soky, you look so good. I am so happy for you," Mofe said calling her by the nickname that had been bestowed on her because Isoken had loved to suck on her thumb, hence, soky.

"Mofe stop calling me that, I am a big girl now oh," Isoken said, reminding Mofe of how young her cousin was, Isoken was a whole five years younger than herself, just turning twenty-one and she was already getting married.

"Of course you are," Mofe said to her cousin, even though she was genuinely scared for her, scared that her marriage might not work out in the way it supposed to. But then, she looked so happy, and Mofe would be tagged a witch if she advised her cousin not to get married. Besides, the deed had been done.

"Congrats Peter," Mofe said, turning to the groom of the day. If anything gave her a bit joy on her cousin's marriage, it was the fact that she was marrying someone relatively close to her age, someone that she had known for a long time. Peter was a tall, dark man with an easy smile always gracing his lips, he didn't seem like the type of get angry easily. He didn't even seem like the type to get angry at all.

He was quiet and calm with a playful demeanour, he knew how to crack jokes, but yet was still quiet about it. Mofe would like to think that it was his uncanny ability to make her cousin laugh, is what attracted them to each other.

"Thank you Mofe," he said. He looked like he was about to open his mouth to say something else, when the best man came over and whispered something into his ear.

Mofe suspected it was about the reception ceremony and so she quickly excused herself, and went on to find her mother, before they both went on to the venue of the reception.

When they got there, the reception was in full swing, with High life jazz playing from the speakers, the cool air from the air conditioned hall gracing both her and her mother's skin, plates of samosas and spring rolls on their table.

The MC was throwing the funniest jokes as they awaited the bride and the groom. Mofe has always loved that part of wedding, the party jollof rice, the music, meeting different people, and having a reason to dress up.

She was swinging her head to the music, and was about to place take a bite of spring roll when she felt a heavy vibration from her purse.

At first, she shrugged, reasoning that she would probably call the person later, but the call seemed persistent as her bag continued to buzz on, attracting the attention of her mother and some of her relatives that she sat with.

Excusing herself, she went outside, away from the loud music to take the call. Extracting the phone from her bag, she looked and saw that it was an unknown number, and that the person had called her five times.

She was about to call the person back, when her phone rang again, and so she picked up her phone.

"Hello," a strangely familiar voice sounded from the other end of the phone.

"Hello," she replied, the voice was obviously male and had brought shivers down her spine, the good type.

"Umm, you don't know who is on the phone, do you?" The voice asked and Mofe shook her head in negation before remembering that person couldn't see her, before sounding a small no.

"Well it's Zino, from SHS, I hope you remember me?" As soon as the name got to her ears, Mofe heart picked up a beat, a fast one.

How can I not remember you? Was the question at the tip of her tongue. There was absolutely no way that she could have actually forgotten him, at least not in that lifetime.

"I do," she said after clearing her throat, trying her best to sound as withdrawn as she could. It had been almost eight years since she last heard his voice, since she last talked to him. If he really wanted to talk to her, he would have just called, she reasoned.

"Well, I guess you got the email for the reunion, I know that you get this email every other year, but then you don't come," he started and Mofe sighed, she figured that there was a hidden reason to why he called, and the reason was the reunion.

"I do get the emails," she said, just for lack of something else to say.

"Well, I wanted to specially invite you, to the reunion, it's a big one this year, a whole decade since we graduated, I just, well I really wanted you to come, I promise that you will not regret it," he said and for the first time during the call, Mofe caught on how nervous he sounded. She realised that the all confident Zino was nervous to talk to her.

She couldn't help the shy smile that crept up her lips.

"So, are you going to come?" He asked her.

"I will think about it," she said vaguely before disconnecting the call and sashaying back into the party, a shy smile gracing her lips.

"Why did you take so long?" Her mother asked when she came back to the hall. The bride and the groom were already there and dancing with the rest of the family, to an upbeat song.

"It was a call from an old friend," she said shrugging, and her mother nodded.

"And Mummy," she said to attract her mother's attention once again.

"Yes," her mother said.

"I am going to my secondary school reunion, on the 16th," she said.
