Chapter 4

You're going to want to stay tuned for this long chapter.

Through the long limbs, her face emerged, painted to look like a unicorn while holding a melting ice cream in one hand, Princess Lily in the other. "Oh sweetie!" Violet dove into a relieving hug, "Don't you ever go off alone again, do you understand?" Her voice affirmed as she pulled away.

"But Momma, I wasn't alone, Uncle bought me ice cream and got me this," She smiled innocently and motioned towards her face.

"What?" Violet blinked furiously in confusion, "How did--"

"No need to thank me," a familiar, deep voice rung from behind her. Wha-- Ross?

She whipped her body around to identify her suspicions. "Don't worry I won't," she bit angrily, pulling her daughter closer to her body. "What are you doing here?"

"Just enjoying this beautiful day, same as you," He smiled slyly.

"You don't honestly expect me to believe you are here on coincidence. Now why are you really here?"

He threw his hands up playfully, "Ah, you got me. I may have noticed the note on your fridge that said you'd be here, so abracadabra I'm here too."

"Leave." She drew an eyebrow and gritted her teeth. He had intervened too much for her liking.

"Hey, this is a public place, I'm just here to spend some time with my niece," He knelt down to Melody who had a ring of chocolate ice cream around her rose bud lips. "Ain't that right Melody?"

She mumbled 'Mmhm' through the thick layer of deliciousness on her face and wiped it away with her arm. Violet, fed up with Ross' sass, was ready to leave. "Come on hun, let's go home." She began strutting away, expecting her daughter to follow, but she was firm in place next to her 'uncle'. "Let's go." She demanded, but Melody shook her head reluctantly.

"I wanna stay with Uncle a little longer."

Knowing her only bargaining chip refused to go with her, she would have to succumb to it too, but on her terms. "We can do one more thing and then we're leaving. Deal?" She didn't even wait for a response, she just continued walking and listened to the sputter of feet follow behind her.

Suddenly, they all heard a happy scream that pierced the air. They looked up to see the the massive structures before them. "You wanna go on the Ferris Wheel?" Violet asked directly to Melody, avoiding Ross completely.

She gulped down her last bite of the cone, rubbing the excess ice cream from her face onto her arm. She then consulted with Princess Lily, "Lily says she's scared of heights."

"You know what I'm scared of?" Ross bent down to her height again, touching her hair gently, but took great caution. She shook her head 'no' silently. "The tickle monster!" He began ticking her furiously sending her into a frenzy of giggles. Violet was annoyed with it all, partly because she was whisked into 'what could have been' in mere seconds. What irritated her most of all was that he still got to her even after all these years, all the moments she spent cursing his name only to think of him more.

When he spoke again it broke Violet out of thought,"You tell her that princesses can't be scared of heights because they live in very very very tall castles."

Melody held the unicorn up to her ear, "She says she isn't scared anymore."

"Then let's go," Violet chimed in.

The line was longer than the loose hair that poured over Melody's silk skin. She occupied herself by having conversations with Princess Lily while Violet and Ross were forced to watch her and avoid eye contact.

"We're almost there!" Melody screamed in anticipation. As people entered and exited the ride she felt more and more squeamish and couldn't stand still.

The woman sporting an employee's name tag and a dull expression on her face instructed the rows of people loudly, "Next!" Violet, Ross, and Melody filed up to the front of the line. "How many?"

Violet and Ross exchanged desperate glances. How could we not have thought of how we would do this? I can't stand to be stuck in a box with Ross any longer, Violet thought over.

Melody beat her to the punch though, exclaiming "Three!" She held up three of her little fingers proudly.

"Go on in," The flat-spoken woman opened the black gate that led them to the shaded passenger pod. Melody was first to fumble inside while Ross and Violet were sure to sit across from each other. Melody held on tightly to the brim of the cart and eagerly waited for the ride to begin.

Melody drew her attention away from the ride momentarily to hand her mother something, "Uncle? Will you hold Princess Lily so she isn't scared?" Ross just grinned and covered the creature's eyes.

After a minute or two the ferris wheel had begun and Melody had already grew bored of it, "It's not fast enough," she complained with a yawn dripping from her mouth. She rested her wobbling head on the side of the cart, while Ross silently admired the sight without protest.

The gentle breeze rustled the leaves in a song and the noise of the city had fizzled out. It wasn't exactly the music of nature, but that would be the closest it could come to. Ross and Violet's eyes were steady on the horizon and even though they both knew it, they both held their pride tighter than they had ever held each other.

Then without warning the defiant sky adorned itself and mourned as golden maroon spilled and blended together. The sun had began its long fall toward its fiery twilight without a moment's notice. The sparkling sun was clothed in garish splendor and sat partially exposed on the swirling horizon, displaying its tinted citrus over the still silhouettes of buildings as the hills sloped away. They felt their cheeks become warmly lit as the sun tried to pry open the last drops of the vibrant, weak limbs over the fair. It had been kissed a bashful pink hue, glowing in orange tinged waves. The rolling, melted clouds were dipped in red, then violet and silver, then crept back to shades of orange. The brilliant sun hovered briefly then slid away, giving its last glimpse of beams on the rippling streams of people below. The city seemed oddly insignificant compared to the bleeding sky, simply just a prelude to the crumbs of nightfall. Hidden threads of light mingled with the tinted clouds. As the wounds of colors bled, Violet found her mind burnt from the sharp cut of the skyscrapers that ripped at the mutable, breathing heavens, she could think of nothing else, amplifying her thoughts.

Their faces were aglow with an unwavering gaze and the last lingering rays before twilight would have to beckon to the stars. Ross' lips bared the resemblance of a smile, but Violet couldn't tell what he was thinking, but he looked to be enjoying his thoughts. Then, Ross stood quietly with warmth splashed on his face, leaving Melody's toy, and moved closer so that Violet would feel his presence while she took in the fading few seconds of the moment.

A calmness flew in with a gentle gust of wind that signaled night fall, making Violet's heart stop for only a second. The ferris wheel seemed to be moving in slow motion as people stumbled underneath them as if they were whispering one another to hush. A small chuckle flew from his lips, "She does that thing you used to do. Do you still do it?" Ross grinned in remembrance, looking at Melody splayed awkwardly across her seat.

"Do what?" Violet finally realized Melody hung her mouth slightly ajar, her eyelashes fluttering as if she'd been dreaming like this for hours.

"You know," Ross pushed, "That." His head bobbed towards Melody again. Her nose scrunched and wiggled in her dream state, the same way Violet's had when she was asleep.

"Oh," She pondered a moment, "Um, yeah I assume so. Nobody is around to watch me sleep so I wouldn't know." She shrugged slightly, careful not to wake the child.

Ross was caught in thought again, So she is single? "Hey, do you remember when our parents forced us to have that god awful dinner with all of them?" He tried to hold back a laugh.

She grinned, "How could I forget?"

His body naturally gravitated closer to hers, "It was terrible! They were arguing the whole time and then we snuck away." His teeth gleamed and her set his hand down next to hers, their pinkies touching. Her hand was cold, but next to each other they were getting much warmer. "You were wearing this dress, the same color of that sunset."

Violet wrapped herself in that day, "Of course I remember that, Goldilocks!" She giggled through her nose, snorting like a kid. Ross wondered if Melody would laugh like that too and was eager to find out. He used to be in love with that laugh-- and the woman who made it. She had always said she hated her laugh, but to him it was much more. It was a river flowing merrily through a beautiful forest when she chuckled or a dancing waterfall when she giggled. He didn't realize how much he had missed that melodic sound maybe because he hadn't heard in years.

"Ah man," His smile grew wider, "I haven't been called that in ages. Brings me back."

"Yeah, it does." She sighed happily, all too aware of her finger twitching underneath his. "Okay grandpa, but who says 'ages' or 'brings me back'?"

He smirked with a glare, then dove back into the memory. "Our parents were so mad when they found out. Grounded for a whole month, that seems like nothing now, but back then it was an eternity."

"There you go again with that age stuff," She joked. Then with a light, but serious tone she said what he'd been thinking all along, "It was so worth it."

They both had become disarmingly aware that they had gone around the ferris wheel three times already and time wouldn't stop for anyone. The darkness had since taken over the sky, speckled with silver, sequenced stars peeked out and glowed like the embers between their pinkies. The sparkling diamonds winked down at them, illuminating the atramentous curtain of sky, and then suddenly the clouds parted. They found the lustrous moon that appeared like a orb of opal that casted brilliant rays of moonlight onto the fair grounds. The moon was broken into pieces by the long trails of cloud, but the air remained slightly frigid. The sun was now only a sallow shadow of it's daytime self and left as a picturesque memory in their minds. Violet glared at the black abyss, wishing to see the pinks again, the same color that reflected on Ross' lips now. But she did seek refuge in the night, so nobody would see when she made a conscious effort to kiss him like she did all those years before.

She turned to him, examining his face and the tresses of silky blonde hair that hung over his forehead. His dark eyes seemed to be that of this very night, sitting below his eyebrows and stared back into hers. "Ross," Her voice cracked under its unusual softness.

His bravery was distilled in his long fingers that slowly and steadily captured hers, folding into the curves of her own. His tone mimicked hers and lined with what was to happen next, "Yeah?"

He leaned into her, a gentle smile playing on his lips as he pushed in closer, their hands kissing without the touch of lips. The thought of reconciling with a lost lover had set both of their heads spinning, veins on fire, and brought a tingle of a hot flush on their faces, luckily shaded by the night, but they couldn't bring themselves to look away, to miss this moment. His eyes swept to her velvet lips, then back up to the forests in her eyes. Ross closed the distance between them before they breathed each other in, reminding themselves of the air they were about to steal away from each other. Neither of them could wait any longer, their lips tingling for the familiar taste of the other.

Right as they were about to dig up the past and change their future, a body stirred from inside the cabin, Melody stretched her arms with a groan. They both suddenly noticed the ferris wheel had stopped moving and they were firmly on the ground. They clamored away from each other, disguising their intentions.

A sleepy grin appeared on the child's face, "Mommy, I'm tired. I don't like this ride," she poked out her bottom lip in a small pout. She hopped out from her seat and grabbed Princess Lily from  the other side of the ride where Ross had sat.

Ross followed them out the exit to the ferris wheel. "Okay sweetie, let's go home." Violet soothed, grabbing her little fingers and interlocking them with her own. Her hand still felt the warm imprint of where Ross' hand had been moments ago and she grinned to herself, something she didn't do nearly enough.

Author's Note: I know this one was long, but yay for Ross and Violet! Of course drama must instill so keep reading to find out more.
