Prologue

Shraddha's Point of View:

Life can be so strange at times. It takes turns without asking for your permission. One small action can change everything at once. But how you handle it makes all the difference. Every now and then, I wonder where life is going to take me.

"Ma'am, we've reached your destination," the cab driver announced, pulling me out of my thoughts.

"Oh, okay. How much for the cab ride?" I asked.

"Forty dollars."

I nodded and started rummaging through my bag for my wallet. I have so much clutter in here that I can't even find it.

"Ma'am, please hurry."

"Yes, I'm so sorry."

Ugh. Where is it? This can't be happening. I hope I didn't lose it. I checked the outside pockets of my bag and finally grasped my wallet.

"Thank God," I sighed in relief and took out fifty dollars.

"Here you go. Keep the change," I said, handing him the money.

"Thank you so much. That's very kind."

"No problem. Can you please help me with my luggage?"

"Yeah, sure, ma'am."

The driver stepped out of the car as I waited for him on the mushy pathway. I had been so lost in my thoughts during the ride that I hadn't even realized how dark it had gotten or that it was snowing. I checked the time on my phone. It was 5:15 PM.

After thanking him for helping with my luggage, he drove off. His car left imprints on the road that would soon be erased by an onslaught of fresh white snow. Thank goodness it started snowing after I landed. Otherwise, my flight would have been canceled, and I would've had to stay an extra day in India.

I started walking toward the hotel, struggling to drag my luggage through the snow.

The events of the past month have taken a toll on me emotionally and physically. Thank the Lord I'm back in New York, away from everything that happened.

I don't need anyone. I'm fine on my own.

As I entered the hotel, I was greeted by decorative lights and wreaths everywhere. The air carried a faint cinnamon scent. Did I mention it's the holiday season?

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry, ma'am."

I was startled back to reality and turned to see a petite woman in her late thirties standing behind the front desk, giving me an apologetic look.

"We have a shortage of bellboys. Here, let me help you with your bags," she said, stepping away from the desk.

"No, no," I cut in. "It's fine. I've got it. I'm a big girl. I have a reservation under the name Shraddha Rao."

"Yes, let me check the system." The receptionist began clicking away on her computer. "Ah, yes. Here are your keys, Ms. Rao. Your room is 1104. Enjoy your stay."

"Thank you," I said, forcing a smile.

"Feel free to call me anytime. Are you sure you don't want someone to help you with your bags?" she asked.

"It's fine. Thanks." I gave her another smile and walked toward the elevators.

I pressed the button and waited. As I glanced around, I realized this hotel was far too luxurious for my budget. But it was the only place available when I booked last minute before boarding my flight. I let out a quiet sigh. I guess everything happens for a reason.

The elevator was taking way too long. I pressed the button a few more times. I'm exhausted, and this damn elevator isn't even coming.

"Come on," I muttered under my breath.

"Don't break the button," a deep, husky voice behind me chuckled.

This is a reminder once again that this book is not intended for kids. This book will definitely have mature content.

Also, please, please, please, do not copy any of the material that is in this book because I wrote a similar plot for a play and I really worked hard on it.
