Lies
Jack's POV
I bolted upright, heart pounding. The room was dark, lit only by a pulsing red light. A fine layer of dust covered my clothes and chunks of cement littered the ground. The door had been literally ripped off of its hinges and thrown into the hallway beyond.
"Hello?" I called, standing and brushing off dust. I glanced up at the security camera, but nothing had changed.
The last thing I remembered was laying down to take a nap after Elsa had left. Now it looked like a bomb had landed nearby.
I picked my way into the hallway, which was just as deserted as the interrogation room. I slowly walked down the hallway and past dozens of closed doors. Towards the end of the hall was a single open door. I stepped inside.
The room had a desk with a single monitor. Beside the monitor was a green light labeled Truth Meter. A video was paused on the monitor. It was Elsa and I, in the interrogation room. I pressed play and watched the scene play out.
"Pitch was trying to get me to do something for him," I was saying in the video. The green light pulsed steadily.
"Betray the Guardians?" Elsa asked.
"No," my recording told her. I tapped my fingers against the desk. Elsa must have wanted to use this as proof for the rest of the Frozen Four.
"Betray or kill us?" Elsa continued.
"No," my recording said, frowning. I backed away from the monitor, thinking as Elsa continued to talk. I still had no idea who had blown up the building, or why. The green light flickered red, bringing my attention back to the monitor. I was talking to Elsa again.
"I feel so violated," my recording said dryly. Apparently the lie detector couldn't recognize sarcasm. I started to turn away, but the light flashed red a second time, even brighter than before. And this time it wasn't sarcasm. I leaned closer.
"No idea why," Elsa was saying. "I've never met you before in my life."
I frowned thoughtfully as the light turned green again. Elsa was lying? About having met me before? Why? What did she have to hide?
A bright flare of red caught my attention. It was halfway through Elsa's call with Hans. As I heard the words Hans spoke, my blood ran cold.
"Stay away from Jack, I'm sure he has mind-bending tricks just like his father!" Hans roared. The light turned green as Elsa spoke.
"He's on our side," she said.
"He'll never be on your side!" Hans shouted as the light turned red once again, more bright than ever before. "You know who's on your side? Kristoff, Anna, and me! And I want what's best for you, so get back here and stay away from Jack!"
"Jeez, calm your jets," Elsa sighed as the light turned green again. "I'm coming, alright?"
"And Jack, if you're listening," Hans continued, "I swear you'll end up where you belong!"
Only this time, the light remained green.
"What are you playing at, Hans?" I muttered, pausing the footage.
I stepped back into the hallway and started going towards the exit, deep in thought. I paused as I heard something crunch under my feet.
"What . . ?" I said, glancing down. A fine layer of frost covered the floor. Another, stronger burst was just up ahead. I followed the trail of ice blasts. A Nightmare was frozen in one, wires sparking faintly. I turned the corner and was met with a battleground.
Snow and ice was everywhere. Frozen or dismantled Nightmares were scattered about, and in the middle of it all was an unconscious form on the ground. Elsa.
"Elsa!" I shouted, running forward and kneeling beside her. She was still breathing, thankfully. As I reached for her arm, her eyes flickered open.
"Jack . . ?" she whispered faintly.
"I'm here," I promised. "Everything's gonna be ok."
"How'd you get out?" Elsa asked.
"Door was blown off it's hinges," I answered. She closed her eyes.
"Right," she said, voice growing stronger. "Stupid Nightmares. There were too many of them. I couldn't stop them all."
"They're gone now," I told her. She sat up and opened her eyes.
"They took the others," she said. "I think they were coming for you."
I helped Elsa stand before glancing around.
"Does this mean I don't have to go back into the interrogation chamber?" I asked.
"As long as you help me get them back, then yes," she promised.
"Perfect," I said. "But before we go trying to break into Pitch's headquarters, we need to go to my place and pick up some equipment."
"You're the boss, Mr.Black."
"Don't call me that."
"Ok, Frost."
