Chapter {11}
I tapped my fingers in concern more than impatiently on the windowsill of the SUV. My stomach more than sick. I should be use to this feeling though. All the times she goes in alone and in my mind-goes in recklessly is enough to make me lose my mind from worry. Of course, she's ranked above me so if she orders me not to pursue? I can't. And I hated that more than anyone ever knew.
Right now, it was testing me. Where did my loyalties lie? I knew that answer all to well. I can't just let her take on the world by herself. She thinks I don't know why she wants to do everything alone. I feel sometimes I know her better than I know myself. She's to brave for her own good. Wanting to take on the risks for everyone.
Dang it, Lily!
My hand moved toward the door handle as I glanced at the tablet again watching the dots on the radar. I mentally groaned, stopping my hand.
I couldn't disobey orders. I knew better. Think, Tyler. I glanced at Eric who sat behind me through the rear view mirror. Then back at my hand. She needs your help. She needs your help. You can't leave her in there-no. She's a pro. She can handle herself. Dang it, Lily, why do you have to be difficult with me. Won't she ever see all I want to do is kiss-keep her safe. I had to tell myself.
I couldn't take this.
"I'd rather die then have to watch you die, Lily." I repeated those words I said to her in my mind and narrowed my eyes. I'm sorry, Lily. I always keep my promises.
Without another thought I pulled the handle on the door and swung the door open, the beeping of the car when a door was ajar started and I heard it as well as another door open after I started to run toward the building across the street. I felt a muscular-heavy body tackle me as I landed with a grunt on the ground, my palms stinging and my chest heaving. I growled mentally and clenched my fist. Eric.
"What the heck are you doing, mate?!" He snapped at me as he kept me pinned.
I shifted and used my leg to wrap around his, as I used my energy to flip him beneath me so I was on top.
"Eric, don't even try to stop me." I chided through gritted teeth. Bringing my balled fist up, ready to swing at him if he didn't take me seriously.
He winced as he murmured something beneath his breathe and looked up at me. "Tyler, use your brain! It's not worth it! She'll be fine."
"Oh for God's sake, Eric! Like Heck you know that!" I snarled at him, my hand gripping the collar of his polo.
Eric narrowed his eyes with a subtle glare. Not moving as I kept him pinned,"maybe I don't!" He snapped,"I'm trying to save you, wake up and smell the roses! You can't do everything with her or for her, Tyler." He reminded me.
"Maybe not everything. But I'll die before I let her do this alone."
"She ordered you not to pursue, idiot. If HQ finds out or she rats on you, you are screwed! What do you not understand about that?! And I highly doubt you want to sit before the director and explain to her exactly why you disobeyed that order. That will only get you in a deeper mess." He explained to me.
I didn't lessen my intent gaze or drop my glare and narrowed eyes. "Take the keys. Be ready to step on the gas when we all get back." I told him, completely ignoring his words. I lowered my fist and grabbed the keys out of my pocket and handed them to him right as he rolled his eyes at me.
"Fine. Get yourself fired and killed. I'm only here, trying to keep you all from getting yourselves killed. But it will be a million freaking years before any of you ever take my advice. For heaven's sake." He muttered as I got off him and he stood up.
I smirked a little at him but didn't waste any time as I took off down the sidewalks and across the street to the back of the building.
Heat rising in the alleyway from an air vent connected the the building and puddles of dirty water from a recent rain fall making noise as I ran through them avoiding them crates. I climbed down the stairs and stopped at a bright yellow emergency door.
Glancing at the key pad I frowned. Great...
There was no way to use the keypad without them knowing unless you had the right combination. And at the moment the only person I knew who knew it was Liz and comms aren't exactly working at the moment. I hurried back up the stairs and paced the alley trying to think. Then it hit me and I stopped, with a small smirk, and pulled a folded up navy blue and white baseball-type hat out of my pocket and pulled it on over my hair and head. And zipped up my jacket before walking to the front of the building and glancing around at the people on the sidewalk who were to busy to notice me before walking in.
I kept my hat low over my eyes and my head down as I walked trough the crowded lobby. Glancing at my watch, Liz had made, to see the radar. Two levels down. They were all two levels down.
I glanced to the side and saw a sign reading: "emergency staircase."
Don't do anything stupid, Lily...
I'm coming.
