Chapter one
"Hailey Austin huh?" The man behind the counter asked me as he looked at a paper in his hands for too long. He looked like he was suffering from glaucoma or something of the sort. He has skin problems and he has a blonde hair.
"Yeah" I answered.
"You're welcome to Andres High School. Take this and go to room B3." He said giving me a pamphlet.
I nodded and headed to the room I was asked to go as a boy in uniform carried my luggage living me with my back pack.
I saw a room tagged 'B2' which means 'B3' is ahead.
I opened the door tagged 'B3'. It made a creaking noise which made the woman in there looked up. 'Great, Hailey, look at you disturbing people's peace on your very first day'
"Yes, come on in." The lady called.
I didn't know she was the owner of the voice. Her voice rang sweetly like she was singing.
I couldn't believe I was standing in front of a human. She looked very pretty. Pretty is an understatement. Her skin was pale white —very chalky. Her topaz eyes were beautiful and round. Her hair was very black and sleek making a contrast with her pale skin.
Her oval shaped face was the perfect definition of beauty. Her teeth looked like they were glittering. They were perfectly arranged and looked very white and shiny.
"Hailey Austin?" She asked in her perfect ringing voice.
"Yes. That's me" I answered startled.
"You're welcome to Andres high School. I'm your house mistress and so you're welcome to Nella house. My name is Theresa Behring. You're free to approach me when you feel like it." She sang.
"T–thanks" I stammered.
The boy bearing my luggage showed me into my dorm. He dropped my bag in the dorm and left without saying anything.
The room was so wide. It contained about ten double beds. I was asked to sleep on the remaining down bed.
I went to drop myself in it. It was now that I felt loneliness sweeping over me. Being in this place felt like being in a different world. It doesn't look like Earth. I looked out of the window starring at the greenery that starred back at me. There were tall green trees and bushes every where. It looked inviting but still gothic. I walked to the window and heard the singing and chirping of birds. I heard the flowing of river. I looked slightly to my right and sure enough, a river so smooth and clean flowed on pebbles. I felt like going out and putting my numb feet inside it.
I heard someone clearing their throat behind me. I turned and it was the boy who helped me with my bags.
"Miss Behring asked to move you to a different dorm" He said.
I nodded and followed him as he took my luggage from where he left it before.
We walked towards the right side of the dorm.
He opened a dorm room and dropped my bags just at the entrance and left silently like before. I stepped in and I was happy with this one. It looked convenient. It was not so wide and it had four single beds. I sat on the one closest to the window and I heard the flowing of rivers again. It was louder this time around. I stood and looked through the window. The river was so close to the wall and it looked even wider.
I slumped myself on the bed after standing for too long.
"I'll miss you, Hailey" "Do you have to go?" My little sister Daphne's voice kept ringing in my head. I miss them a lot especially Daphne. My mom's face flashed before me then my dad.
I felt like crying when I remembered my best friends Sav and Berny. I wished I could go back. But this are the things you have to go through when running after your dreams trying to make them come to pass.
I heard footsteps and laughing at the door. I sat up and felt a tear trickled down my cheeks. I quickly wipe it off and glued my eyes at the entrance.
Three girls entered. They were all blondes. When I came here, I haven't seen any girl with brown hair. It made me feel odd as if it matters.
"Hey, I'll see you. Will be right back." One of the girls said to me as she dropped her books on the bed next to me and followed her friends out.
I found myself praying and wishing the girl comes back soon as loneliness and meaningless fear gripped me. I would have weep to pass away the time but I've shed all the tears and it seems the tear ducts are empty.
I looked out the window and it was dark. Meaning I had some sleep. The girl wasn't back. I went to where that boy had dropped my luggage and brought it to my bed. I was very hungry and it's late.
I brought out my water bottle and drank the rest of the water in it.
I was about to lie down again when the girl sprinted in startling me. I sat up immediately as she threw herself in the bed and covered herself with her blanket. I kept looking at the entrance and at her to see what was after her.
"Better sleep now. You don't want Miss White to whip you do you? I don't think you'll like the idea of spending three months straight in the sick bay this early" she whispered and I quickly lied in the bed.
My eyes squint into the darkness to see who Miss White was. Why is this room even dark? They don't like light? Then I saw a woman walked into the room. She looked stout and sure enough, she was also a blonde.
Are brown haired girls forbidden in this part of the world?
She walked in with a cane in her hands. Cane?
She walked around and left the room.
"Why are the lights off?" I whispered in a hush.
"They usually go off after ten pm. That's curfew." She whispered sitting up.
"Why are you sitting up again? Won't she come back?" I whispered.
"We can stop whispering now. She's gone." She said and brushed her hands through her hair.
"Hi, so I'm Lara. And you are?" She asked smiling at me through the darkness.
"I'm Hailey" I answered.
We talked for so long. We talked about ourselves and she told me about the school.
She's from a wealthy family, her dad's a medical doctor and her mom's a lecturer. Her elder sister is stepping into the movie industry and she's a writer. Her elder brother is an accountant. She's the last child and so she's pampered a lot. I'm from a medium income family. My mom's a teacher, my dad works as a secretary. My elder brother is yet to finish University and Daphne is just a kid. She's in her grade four.
Apparently, there is something she doesn't know about the school. Meanwhile, she was supposed to be in this school for a year now.
She drifted off to sleep while I slept on my bed facing the ceiling. I couldn't sleep for unknown reasons. I kept thinking about my family and friends back home. Seriously, I miss Sav and Berny. Daphne would be asleep by now.
I sighed and prayed for sleep to locate me. I was only staring into the darkness at the ceiling as some creepy sounds came from probably the forest near. Which school has forest under their dorms? What if a creepy animal enters? I shuddered at the thought of seeing a snake crawl in through the window. I closed the louvre blades and sank back into the bed as a sigh escaped my lips.
I brought out my wrist watch and squinted to see the time. Who does that? I sighed and opened the window a bit to allow the moonlight in so I could see the time.
"Holy Cow!" I hushed.
"12 midnight?" I asked.
Who was I even asking? The watch?
Whoa! Well then, maybe I will get to experience all the creepy senseless stuffs they say about midnight. I don't believe in such things anyway, but this school seems like a different world. I could stay up the whole night back at home without any problems but this is school. A creepy gothic school. I don't know why, but I have a weird feeling about this school. It made me want to pack my stuffs and go back to Nassau. What about Miss White? I don't care. I don't give a fuck what she says. She would have to buzz off.
"Urggghhh" I groaned out loud as Lara stirred.
"Lucky girl" I mused as I watched her stirred and slept again peacefully allowing gentle and soft snores from her slightly parted lips.
"I wish I could sleep" I muttered in a sad voice.
Then the door creaked open. I was scared stiff. Is this some of the creatures that haunt people in the night?
I then suspected it would be the owner or owners of the two empty beds. Wait. Where's Miss White? The curfew overseer. That's my own nickname for her. Two figures walked into the room. It didn't look like they were walking. It looked more like they were floating an inch above the ground. They moved swiftly and smoothly. Not with speed but it was like they were using skate boards. They moved very gracefully. I was able to notice them in the night because of their chalky pale skin. They walked in silently and came to sit on the empty beds.
I wished I could switch on the light and see their faces. I could tell from the dark that they are also brunettes. No doubt.
I sighed to maybe get their attention but it looked like I failed. They said something very quietly and softly. It was inaudible but I could tell they had some kind of ringing in their voices. Or was I just missing the mystery Miss Behring.
I sighed again and they lied on their bed. They are not deaf, are they? If they were would they be talking with each other? I rolled my eyes and covered my face with the blanket continuing my prayers for sleep.
Hmm. That wasn't bad was it? Please comment and vote.
