Chapter 1
Frisk's P.O.V
I opened the door to my mom's house and instantly went to collapse on the couch with a loud, relieved sigh, dropping my backpack beside it. My sister followed and sat down at the other end. "I'm so glad that our final project has finally come," I said, my voice muffled by the cushion. "The last thing between us and sweet freedom!"
"Speaking of which, what are you going to do for it?" Chara asked, and although I couldn't see her, I could tell her red eyes were staring at me. I turned my head to the side to stare back at her, and her eyes darted away, chocolate brown hair covering them. I frowned slightly. I knew she hated her eyes since they were such an unnatural color, but I thought they were beautiful and often found myself wishing I had eyes like hers. "Frisk!" Chara snapped her fingers in front of my face, abruptly bringing me out of my thoughts. She was glaring at me. I forgot that was another thing she hated: being stared at.
"Huh? Oh yeah." I sat up and stretched. "You first, though," I said. I was mainly stalling for time since I knew she wouldn't like my answer.
"I asked you first!" she protested. "Now tell me or else." She lifted her hands as a mischievous smile spread across her face. She was getting ready to tickle me, and being the very ticklish person I am, I always gave in when she does that.
"Fine, I'll tell you," I said, letting out a nervous laugh as she continued to threaten to tickle me. I opened up my mouth, but instantly closed it when the front door slammed closed. I glanced over to see our infuriated mother, Elena, walk into the kitchen. Mettaton must be taking all her customers again, since he's the only one to really anger her outside of the house. When she was out of sight, I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding and after a short moment, I realized Chara did as well. We smiled nervously at each other before I finally responded. "I'm planning to live on the streets for a few months."
Loud bangs and clangs came from the kitchen, and my best bet was that it was a bunch of pots and pans falling onto the ground. "Excuse me!?" our mother's voice exploded throughout the whole house. Almost immediately after, she stormed her way up to the couch, her business suit catching the light streaming in from the windows. "Who in their right mind would willingly want to do that?!" Her glare told me to keep quiet, contradicting what she asked.
With my determination rising, I replied, "In order to start a business to help those who can't help themselves, I need to understand what they're going through so I'm prepared."
She turned her glare to my sister. "What about you? Have your teachers approved of this?"
"I'm looking to get an internship at one of the businesses similar to what we want to do," Chara answered, her voice getting to a near mumble at the end.
"We won't find out until tomorrow if our projects will be accepted or not," I finished. Elena nodded after a moment, her glare changing into a thoughtful mask, and then walked back into the kitchen without another word.
After a minute, my sister whispered, "Okay, either she's pleased or really angry." I agreed, still staring at the archway to the kitchen. "Have you told your boyfriend yet?" she asked me.
"I'll tell him when he gets back from the store with Fuku, that way I can tell them both." She hummed in response, and I finally tore my gaze away to be met with serious, red eyes close to my face. I was about to ask her if she wanted something, but she beat me to it.
"Do you promise to be careful? Might I remind you that you won't have a phone, any money, or a place to live. Plus, there are all kinds of creeps wandering the streets! You never know if you might run into a thief or a murderer, and that's just the tip of the iceberg!"
"I know the risks, Chara," I reassured her, smiling softly. "But like they say, you can't spell Frisk without risk." I smiled wider as she slapped my arm in annoyance.
"You're the only one who says that!"
"What's going on here?" a confused, male voice sounded from the front door. I didn't even hear it open, probably because Chara was shouting at me. I turned my gaze to the voice's host and spotted my boyfriend and Fuku coming inside with grocery bags. "Is she using her 'Frisk without risk' thing on you, Chara?"
"Yes," my sister answered as I got up from the couch and went to give him a kiss on the cheek, which he turned into one on the lips. I smiled as he kissed me back before breaking it to help the two put away the groceries.
"Will, it's nice to see you," my mother greeted him, attending the stove with a boiling pot of water on top. "Fuku, come help me with dinner," she ordered the green fire monster. That was the one thing Chara and I really hated: how monsters were pretty much treated as slaves. It wasn't fair for them. They're sentient beings like us, yet they didn't even have a say in anything when they emerged from the mountain. I just hope, with the presidential election coming up in a few months, that the new president will be more open to the thought that monsters roam the surface with us.
"It's nice to see you too, Mrs. Nielsen," he said. Fuku complied with her order, moving over to the stove, and Chara came over to fill in her spot, putting away the refrigerated food while my boyfriend and I put away everything else like cereal and chisps - a monster brand of chips that's really good.
"Please, Will, call me Elena. You've been with my daughter for two years now, I think you are more than allowed to use my first name."
He nodded and said, "Alright, Elena," before turning to me as I was putting the last of the groceries away. "So, why did you use your 'Frisk without risk' card on Chara?" I froze for a second before sighing to help calm myself down for what I have to tell him. He's going to be the one person I'll miss the most. Not to say I won't miss any of my friends or family, but it's a different kind of love with him. A kind of love that makes me feel safe, and with me being away for so long, I know I'm going to be missing that feeling and him a lot.
"I used it because of my final project proposal," I answered slowly, avoiding his gaze by looking at the countertop. "I want to know what conditions homeless and jobless people are in so that I'm prepared for when Chara and I open our own business, meaning I'm going to live among them." I finally raised my gaze to meet his. It wasn't as shocked or as protective as I thought it would be.
"For how long?" he asked after a moment.
"At least a few months." For a second I thought his eyes sparkled, but it was gone as quickly as it came, so I wasn't sure. It must have just been my imagination playing tricks on me. Before Will could say anything, my phone's notification sound rang out. I checked what it was, and instantly opened the email when I saw it was from my teacher. Glancing over it, I nearly squealed with excitement when I read the big, bold words "PROPOSAL ACCEPTED".
