Chapter 6: Beverly
I sat in the backseat of Lisa's car as we drove down the highway in silence. I didn't like the silence, so I tried to start a conversation.
"Lisa, where are we going?" I asked and she shrugged, her hands clenching and unclenching the steering wheel.
"I have no idea. We're pretty much following Jack blindly." Lisa said, her voice uneasy. She drove off to the side to see if she could a glimpse of what we were heading towards.
"I think we're going to their old house," Blake said in a quieter voice as he stared out the left window. He seemed sad for some reason.
"How would you know? We could be going to another small town or a farm." I said, and he shook his head. He looked back at me through the rear-view mirror.
"They probably want to go back to their house to get their things and maybe we will stay the night if there are less infected in the area. I mean, Bev, you went back to your house, so why wouldn't they want to go back to their house?" Blake said, leaning his head on the window and turning in his seat, so he could look at Lisa as she drove.
"He does have a point. And I do know that they were talking about their next move before I left earlier today." Lisa said, seeming to calm a bit. She looked kind of stressed out, and I didn't know why.
"Lisa, are you okay?" I questioned and she glanced back at me through the rear view mirror.
"Why wouldn't I be okay?" She said hesitantly. There was definitely something wrong.
"What happened earlier?" Blake said, straightening up in his seat. Lisa glanced at him, her lips twitching as though she were going to be upset.
"I had to put down two of them. One of them looked like... Like.. Kristy." She said, her eyes filling with tears. Blake put his hand on her shoulder to calm her down, and it seemed to work. She gave him a sad smile, as though thankful for him being there. I felt like there was something going on between the two of them, but I wasn't sure just yet. She wiped at her eyes, one at a time with her right arm. All I could think of was how she left us and could have died. There was an anger building inside of me until it exploded out of me.
"Why did you leave in the first place? You could have gotten yourself killed! That was completely reckless!" I said, shouting in the car and flailing my arms. If she never came back and we had left her, I would have worried for the rest of my life, never knowing if she was okay or not. I don't think I could handle this world without her. She's like the only close thing to family I have left.
"I needed to go back... To my old school." She said and Blake's gaze shifted to her, his eyes widening. He stayed quiet, seemingly unsure of what to say. He seemed to regain his composure and settled. He knew the same thing I was thinking.
"Were you bit?" He questioned and Lisa thankfully shook her head.
"No, of course not! I wouldn't risk your guys' safety. If I was bit, I wouldn't have come back." She said, then stared out the front window at Jack's truck. Her hands continued to clench and unclench the steering wheel.
"What did you need at the school that was so damn important that you needed to risk your life for it?" Blake questioned and she just continued to stare out the front window.
"A locket. And a book." She said, tilting her head to the side, stretching out her neck.
"YOU RISKED YOUR LIFE FOR A LOCKET AND A BOOK?" I screamed as I fought to get out of my seat and hit her for being so reckless. Blake turned around and put his hands on my shoulders, pushing me down into the seat. I was beyond furious with her. Why the heck would she do that?!?
"Calm down. Let her explain." Blake said and I tried, but I was so angry at her. How could she have been so foolish?
"The locket belonged to my sister. It has a picture of her and I inside. The book had been a project we were working on together to give to dad for his birthday. I needed to get them. I couldn't just leave that part of my life behind. The past is what makes us who we are. And you're complaining about how I risked my life? You risked everyone's lives by running off to your house to get that stupid bear of yours!" She said, then shut her mouth in surprise. I looked at her in shock. I ground my teeth, then decided not to fight over something like this in a car while she was driving.
"Look, Bev, I'm sorry." She said, turning to look at me. I crossed my arms and looked out the window to my left.
"I guess I'm sorry too for yelling at you," I said, then I shifted to look out the front window.
Jack was slowing down, so we did as well. He came to a complete stop ahead and got out. Lisa parked behind him, and we all got out as well. We walked around his truck and saw what the others did. The highway was blocked off by a cement roadblock, and past that were cars upon cars. Most of them had their doors thrown open and some of the windows had been smashed. There were cars in the ditch as well, meaning we couldn't drive there either. I couldn't see any of the dead in the distance, but I felt like there had to be some out there.
"Guess we're going to have to walk from here," Jack muttered, his gaze focused on the dead cars covering the road.
"Can't we go around?" I asked and he shook his head. I looked at Lisa and she shook her head as well.
"Damn it." Blake sighed, grabbing the bags out of the trunk of the car. He handed me my backpack and I groaned; I really didn't want to walk. Lisa went into her car and took the keys out, just in case some sole survivor was to come by and steal her car. Maggy went over and did the same for Jack's truck; knowing him, he would probably lose the keys. Jack looked at me and put his hand on my shoulder.
"It would be nightfall by the time we went around and really dangerous. We need to grab what we can, and we'll come back for the cars tomorrow." He said, then grabbed his bag from the back of the truck and started to walk towards the unknown.
