Chapter 9: Lisa
I slowly opened my eyes, waking from the slightest movements of my head moving up and down. I adjusted my head to look up at Blake who was still here in the room, asleep under me.
His chest rose and fell as he breathed in and out which was a comforting rhythm. The room was lit by the sun light coming in through the window above the bed. It was nice. This....was nice. It was the first time any of us had slept in a bed for a while. I wondered...
I got up, trying my best not to wake Blake, and left the room, looking for a washroom. I found it at the other end of the basement and looked inside. There was a shower, but there was a slim chance they actually had water. I left the washroom and climbed up the stairs, looking for Jack. That's when I heard the running water from upstairs and smiled. I ran back downstairs, heading straight into the washroom and shutting the door.
There may not be any hot water because the power was out, but it was a shower and I smelt terrible. I turned on the shower and stripped from my clothes. I looked in the cabinet mirror above the sink. Yes, I thought, thank the Lord. A new deodorant stick was still in the plastic in the cabinet. There was even a tube of toothpaste and a brand new toothbrush.
This must have been the guest shower, but it was great. I hopped into the shower and just about screamed. It was freezing cold, but after about a minute, I got used to it. I knew I had to be quick if anyone else wanted to use it and wasn't too sure how much water was left anyways. I used the shampoo that was on a shelf, and I cleaned my whole body and washed my hair. There was no point in shaving because I would probably not be able to for a long time afterwards and it didn't really matter anyway.
I turned off the shower and got out, realizing that there was no towel in this room. Damn it. I must have been way too excited to notice there wasn't one, but now that I was clean, it really didn't matter to me. I looked under the sink and found one of my favourite things that I truly had missed. Coconut scented lotion. I lathered my legs in it and smiled. For once, I smelled good and was clean. It was a great feeling. There was a knock at the door. Damn, the shower must have woken up everyone else in the house.
"Hey, Lisa. It's Blake. Are you done in there? I heard the shower, and I would really like one. Can I come in?" He questioned and I scrunched my face in a frown.
"Could you go find me a towel first? I'm not really suitable at the moment." I said, and there was a pause before he spoke.
"Uh, yeah. Okay, I'll be right back." He said then ran off, his steps echoing throughout the basement. He must have really wanted a shower.
About five minutes later, there was another knock on the door. In that time, I had brushed my teeth and ran my fingers through my hair to untangle it. I opened the door slightly to peak out, and there stood Blake, towel in his arm and around his waist. He wasn't wearing anything but the towel. I glanced away, my cheeks filling with warmth.
"I brought you a towel." He said, then slid the towel through the crack of the door, and I closed it, while he stayed on the other side.
"Thanks," I said as I quickly dried myself off and threw my other pair of clothes on. I slid on the small shirt and the trouser pants and opened the door, letting him in. I grabbed the toothpaste, toothbrush and deodorant.
"It's quite cold. But it is way better than nothing." I said, keeping my eyes to the ground.
He nodded and walked into the washroom, closing the door behind him.
I went back to the room we had stayed in and grabbed my bag off the floor and put it on the bed. I emptied it out on the bed, looking at all the things that I had collected and at the trove from the duffel bag.
A large hunting knife about three-quarters of the length of a ruler, a box of ammunition and a small metal revolver. It was heavy to hold, but I held it up with little ease. My father had shown me once how to load a gun. He always wanted me to be safe and be able to protect myself and my younger sister. He had one, bigger than this one, at home somewhere in a safe he had shown me under the floorboards in his bedroom. It was located under his bed, and he said that it was only for emergencies.
I had once told my friend about it, but she thought I had been lying to her to make friends. I wasn't lying, but I really did want her to be my friend. We were in the second grade when I told her that. I heard the shower turn off and I stuffed everything back into the back of my bag, including the new stuff I had acquired from the bathroom. I began to load the revolver and spun the cylinder where the bullets sat. I pushed it back into place with a click and smiled. After assuring the safety was on and wouldn't slip, I stuffed it into the back of my pants and pulled my shirt over it.
Ten minutes later, Blake walked out with wet hair, in a grey pair of torn jeans and a dark blue hoodie. I sat on the couch, reading through the book Kristy and I were writing together before everything happened. When he walked over, I put the notebook back in my bag and got up. He grabbed his bag from the room and came back over to me again. We were about to walk upstairs when we heard a scream.
It was Cindy.
We heard the sound of a window smashing and another scream, but this time from Maggy. We ran up the stairs and stayed quiet, looking out the crack of the open door. There was glass scattered all over the floor.
The weird thing was, there was no infected in the house. The door flew open.
People walked in with guns.
People.
