Seven

Ally picked leaves and sticks out of her hair as she walked, trying to comprehend what she'd dreamed about. Her mind kept flashing to the scene of the humans and the queen. She had powers? Were they strong enough for a queen to want to steal them? And her life . . .

She combed her hair in a trance, nearly tripping on a fallen branch. She thrust out her hand, willing something to happen. Nothing. Ally brought her hand back to her hair, but she noticed little flecks of dancing color across her palm. Gathering her concentration into her hand, it began to glow. Her eyes widened, light reflecting on the glassy surface. With an earshattering pop! it disappeared, leaving Ally stunned and more confused then before. She then shrugged, knowing all of this was crazy and she was just having nightmares. Really bad ones.

Ally then realized that she had an even bigger problem: where would she go to the bathroom? Or find food? Or sleep? Perhaps she could fashion a sort of cot, like the ones Shad had. She walked further, wondering how to make it. She pulled out more leaves from her hair, grimacing. She'd make sure hers didn't have the debris on top.

Eventually, she came across a small clearing, light pouring in from above. Ally twirled around, checking the area. She then made a better sweep, making sure she wasn't intruding on someone else's property. She shrugged, and set to work pushing leaves and branches out. When it was cleared, she found some rocks and laid them in a circle. She threw in a handful of dry leaves and sticks, then a couple more. She ripped vines from trees, apologizing if her tugging looked painful to the shrubbery. Most people would never talk to trees, but they were living things, too. Ally always thought humans took them for advantage, never even seeing what the world would be like without them.

When she had enough vines, sturdy branches, and large leaves, she began to weave the vines around the branches she was using as a frame. When she was finished, she sat back and inspected her handiwork. Ally picked it up, tying it between two trees. She spread the big green leaves across the hammock, patting them to be sure they stayed in place. By now the sun had climbed to the center of the sky, and she realized it was noon. She looked at the clearing, now equipped with a fireplace and hammock. Ally grabbed some access vines and tied a few slip knots, then attached them to trees, hiding the green ropes in the shrubbery.

Worked out and satisfied, she climbed into her hammock, swaying in the breeze. She looked at her hands, brows furrowing. Rallying her concentration, she forced the energy into her hands. Flecks of light spread across them, inching into larger spots. Soon her hands were glowing. Panic rising, she swung her body off the vines, landing on her knees. She tried to get up, but she was worried her hands might burn the grass. But she realized her hands didn't hurt, they were just warm and glowing. She tentatively touched the wettest blade of grass she saw, and was relieved to see it reacted normally. Ally willed them to darken. Eventually the light had left her hands entirely. But she couldn't help wondering if she could do more then make her hands light up. But if she couldn't, then what would that queen want with her? She pushed the thought to the back of her mind, and decided to focus on making her hands glow and resume to their normal state.

She spent the rest of the afternoon on her hammock, playing with her hands. By nightfall she could make them blink in and out of their bright state with ease, and had gone on to other parts of her body.   Ally continued into the night, working on her arms and feet. Soon she realized she was making herself glow as an excuse, afraid of what sleep might bring. Lighting up her fingertips, she fiddled with the soft green rope around her wrist, looking up at the moon through the branches. She noticed it looked considerably larger than it did back home, and a bit darker, too. It looked full, but she knew that last night was a full moon. So maybe she'd be fine. Ally scrambled for her satchel, pulling out the red crystal. She left the hammock, and crouched by the circle of rocks. Holding the stone to a twig, she willed flames to spark. When nothing happened, she grabbed a rock and hit it against the crystal. Sparks flew off of it, instantly growing into a red and white fire. It wasn't the same as a normal fire, but  it provided the warmth she needed.

Her stomach growled. For a moment she wondered what she could do to find food, but then remembered the fruit Shad had put in her satchel. She pulled it out, brushing her fingers across the silky skin. It looked like a pear, but it was dappled with pink, blue, and purple. She wondered if it was poisonous, but then took the tiniest bite, surprised to discover it tasted like crepes. She crossed her legs and ate by the fire, fingers still aglow. When she was finished, she tossed the core into the flames, a sweet smell filling the air. Climbing back into the hammock, she stared at the bright stars. It was amazing to see what they looked like without all the human lights and pollution. The thought reminded her of her family and her eyes welled. Ally pulled the hammock over, so it covered her body.  She gazed at her hands, letting the light overcome them, and blinking out just as quickly. The motion seemed almost calming. She repeated it until her eyelids began to droop, and she softly snored in a dreamless sleep.
