Chapter 17
The dawn did not bring clarity; it only brought a harsh and unforgiving light that exposed the emptiness of the apartment. Miu had spent the remaining hours of her day off sitting in the exact same spot on the sofa, watching the shadows shift across the floor until the sun began to bleed through the curtains.
The silence that Tan had left behind was not a quiet thing. It was a loud and thumping presence that echoed in the hollows of her chest. Every time she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the darkened television screen, she saw a stranger. Her eyes were rimmed with a dull and heavy red, her skin sallow under the unforgiving morning glow.
She went through the motions of her morning routine like an automaton. She showered until her skin was pink from the heat, trying to wash away the lingering sense of failure that clung to her. When she stood before the vanity to apply her skincare, her hand instinctively reached for the jewelry dish on the counter. Her fingers hovered over the simple silver band that Tan had given her for their second anniversary. It was a modest thing, a promise of a life that was supposed to be stable and safe.
She picked it up, the metal feeling cold and heavy in her palm. For a long second, she considered putting it back on, using it as a shield to pretend that her world had not just tilted off its axis. But as she looked at her own trembling hands, she realized she could not carry the weight of the lie any longer. She set the ring back down with a sharp and hollow click, leaving it behind alongside the necklace she usually wore. Her neck felt strangely bare, exposed to the world in a way that made her feel vulnerable and raw.
The drive to the studio was a blur of gray rainy streets and the muffled sound of the radio. When Miu arrived, the bustling energy of the set felt like a physical assault on her senses. The crew was moving with a frantic purpose, hauling light stands and adjusting backdrops for the morning shoot. It was a domestic scene today, one of the final moments of quiet before the dramatic climax of the series.
They were supposed to be filming a scene where Sky and Summer share a quiet breakfast in their new apartment, a moment of domestic bliss that felt like a cruel joke given the wreckage of Miu's actual morning.
"Miu! You are five minutes early," P'Nan shouted from the director's chair, her eyes scanning a script. "Go to hair and makeup. Lena is already in the chair. We need to move fast today because the weather is turning and we need the natural light."
Miu nodded, her throat feeling as if it were filled with dry sand. She walked toward the dressing room, her heart hammering a frantic and uneven rhythm against her ribs. She pushed the door open, the scent of expensive hairspray and floral perfume hitting her like a wall.
Lena was already there, wrapped in a dark silk robe, her eyes closed as a stylist worked on her hair. The stinging awkwardness of the room was immediate. The air felt charged, a thick and heavy tension that made the simple act of breathing feel like a challenge.
Lena did not open her eyes when Miu sat in the chair beside her, but Miu saw the way Lena's jaw tightened, a subtle and sharp movement that proved she was acutely aware of Miu's presence.
The silence lasted for ten minutes as the stylists worked in hushed tones. Miu stared at herself in the mirror, watching as the makeup artist expertly covered the shadows under her eyes and added a healthy glow to her cheeks that she did not feel. It was a mask, a beautiful and deceptive layer that allowed her to be the version of herself that the world demanded.
"You're not wearing your ring," Lena said suddenly. Her voice was low, a private murmur that was lost to everyone but the two of them.
Miu flinched, her eyes darting to Lena's reflection in the mirror. Lena had finally opened her eyes, and she was staring directly at Miu's bare hand resting on the armrest of the chair. The look in Lena's eyes was not one of triumph; it was a mixture of concern and a deep, piercing curiosity that made Miu want to shrink away.
"I forgot it," Miu whispered, her voice sounding thin and unconvincing.
"You never forget it," Lena countered, her gaze moving from Miu's hand to her face. She leaned in closer, her voice dropping even further until it was just a breath against the side of Miu's head. "What happened yesterday, Miu? You look like you have been through a war."
Miu turned her head away, focusing on a bottle of foundation on the vanity. "It was just a long day off. I didn't sleep well. It is nothing for you to worry about, P'Lena."
The use of the formal title stung. Lena sat back in her chair, a cold and distant mask settling over her features. "Fine. If it is nothing, then make sure it stays nothing when the cameras are rolling. P'Nan is already on edge today. She doesn't have the patience for wooden acting."
The shoot was a special kind of torture. The scene required them to be physically close, sitting at a small wooden table in a sun drenched kitchen. Lena had to reach over and playfully steal a piece of fruit from Miu's plate, their fingers brushing in a way that was meant to be light and affectionate. But every time Lena touched her, Miu felt a jolt of electricity that made her want to cry. The physical contact, which had once been a source of comfort, now felt like a reminder of everything she was losing and everything she was terrified to want.
"Cut!" P'Nan shouted, throwing her headset onto the table. "Miu, what's wrong with you today? You are reacting to Lena like she's a stranger. This is supposed to be a comfortable moment. You have lived together for months in this story. Why are you jumping every time she moves?"
Miu bowed her head, her hands twisting in her lap. "I'm sorry, P'. I will do better."
"Take five minutes," P'Nan sighed, rubbing her temples. "Lena, talk to her. Fix whatever this is."
The crew dispersed to grab water and check the equipment, leaving the two of them alone on the kitchen set. The artificial sunlight from the high powered lamps felt hot and oppressive. Lena stayed in her seat, her eyes fixed on Miu with a terrifying intensity.
"He left, didn't he?" Lena asked. It wasn't a question; it was a statement of fact.
Miu looked up, her eyes swimming with tears that she could no longer suppress. The "Safe Zone" of the set had finally crumbled. "He moved out yesterday. He said he couldn't do it anymore. He said he was tired of being a safety net for a woman who was already flying."
Lena's expression softened, the coldness vanishing in an instant. She reached across the small table and took Miu's hands in hers, her grip firm and grounding. "Miu, I am so sorry."
"Don't be sorry," Miu sobbed, a soft and broken sound that made the stylists in the corner turn their heads. "It's my fault. I ruined it. I tried to have everything and I ended up with nothing. I am a liar, Lena. I lied to him and I'm lying to the fans and I am lying to myself."
"You're not a liar," Lena said, her voice fierce and steady.
She stood up and pulled Miu out of the chair, leading her toward the shadows behind the set where the cameras couldn't see them. She pulled Miu into a hug, her arms wrapping around her with a strength that felt like the only thing keeping the world from spinning out of control. "You are just a person trying to navigate a world that doesn't allow for mistakes. You are allowed to be hurt. You are allowed to be lost."
Miu buried her face in Lena's neck, the scent of her perfume a familiar and grounding presence. For a few seconds, the awkwardness and the guilt vanished, replaced by a raw and honest connection that they had been dancing around for years.
"I don't know what to do now," Miu whispered into Lena's skin. "The house is so quiet. I'm afraid to go back there."
"Then don't go back there tonight," Lena said, her hand stroking the back of Miu's head. "Stay with me. Just for tonight. No cameras, no fans, no talk of the series. Just two friends who need to breathe."
Miu pulled back just enough to look at her. The offer was a dangerous one. If she stayed with Lena, the lines would be blurred beyond repair. The "almost" confession from Manila would become a reality. But as she looked into Lena's eyes, she realized she didn't have the strength to be alone anymore. The stinging reality of her life was that Lena was the only one who truly knew her, the only one who had seen her at her highest and her lowest.
"Okay," Miu whispered. "Just for tonight."
They returned to the set a few minutes later, their faces composed but their hearts forever altered. The rest of the shoot went smoothly, the chemistry between them so palpable that P'Nan didn't have to give a single note. To the world, they were Sky and Summer, the perfect couple in a perfect world. But as the sun began to set over the studio and the lights were dimmed, Miu knew that the story was only just beginning.
The stinging awkwardness was still there, a constant and humming presence, but for the first time, it didn't feel like a barrier. It felt like a bridge. As they walked toward Lena's car in the cooling evening air, Miu realized that she was no longer walking on eggshells. She was walking toward a new and terrifying truth, and for the first time in a long time, she wasn't walking alone.
