Chapter 20
The air in the studio felt thinner on Monday morning, as if the tension had been replaced by a quiet, vibrating energy that neither Miu nor Lena knew how to categorize. Miu walked onto the set with her head held higher than it had been in months, but there was a glassiness to her eyes that spoke of a recent and profound shedding of skin.
She felt lighter, the invisible weight of the ring she no longer wore replaced by a strange, cool freedom. But with that freedom came a new kind of vulnerability. She was no longer a person in a relationship; she was just herself, and that felt like standing in a crowded room without a coat.
Lena was already there, leaning against the craft services table with a cup of black coffee. She watched Miu approach, her sharp eyes taking in every detail, the way Miu's shoulders didn't hunch anymore, the way she didn't check her phone every five minutes with a look of dread.
Lena felt a surge of hope so strong it was almost painful, but she immediately suppressed it. She knew the rules of the heart. Miu was freshly wounded, her life still in pieces on a coffee shop floor near the university.
To step forward now, to claim her, would be to impose a new script before the old one had even been archived.
"You look different today," Lena said as Miu reached her. Her voice was steady, carefully neutral, though the way she looked at Miu was anything but.
"I feel different," Miu replied. She didn't look away this time. She met Lena's gaze with a raw honesty that made the breath catch in Lena's throat. "It's quiet, P'Lena. I didn't realize how much noise I was making just trying to stay still."
The awkwardness was there, but it was a softer thing now, a fragile equilibrium. They stood in the middle of the bustling set, a foot of space between them that felt like a vast canyon and a tiny crack all at once.
Lena wanted to reach out and touch Miu's hand, to confirm that this version of her was real, but she kept her hands wrapped around her coffee mug. She was determined to let Miu breathe, to let her feel the full weight of her new reality without the pressure of a new expectation.
However, the equilibrium was tested sooner than either of them expected.
Because the series was a global hit, the studio had begun bringing in guest stars for the final arc to expand the "world" of the show.
Enter Korn, a rising male idol who had been cast as a potential love interest for Miu's character in a flashback sequence. He was young, charismatic, and possessed a golden retriever energy that was impossible to ignore. He arrived on set with a bright smile and a lack of awareness regarding the complex, invisible spiderwebs connecting the lead actresses.
"Nong Miu," Korn said, his voice a deep, pleasant baritone. He used the affectionate term for a younger sister, but the way he smiled made it feel far more personal. He didn't just stand near her; he inclined his head, closing the distance in a way that signaled he wasn't intimidated by her rising fame. "It is a pleasure to finally work with you. I have heard so many wonderful things about your dedication."
Miu smiled, offering a respectful Wai. "Thank you, P'Korn. I am honored to share the screen with a senior like you."
From across the room, Lena felt a cold, sharp spike of something she hadn't felt in a long time. This wasn't a junior she could easily dismiss. This was a man who knew the industry, a man who was looking at Miu not as a co-star, but as a woman. The stinging awkwardness of the room shifted. Lena's posture became predatory, her eyes narrowing as she watched Korn lean in to whisper something about the script that made Miu tilt her head and laugh.
During the rehearsal for the flashback, Korn was supposed to catch Miu as she "tripped" during a university festival scene. He didn't just catch her arm; he pulled her flush against his chest, his hand splayed firmly across the small of her back.
"Careful, Nong Miu," Korn murmured, his face inches from hers. "We wouldn't want you getting hurt before the big finale."
Miu felt the weight of Lena's gaze like a physical burn. She looked toward the monitors where Lena was standing. Lena wasn't looking at the screen; she was looking directly at where Korn's hand was pressing into Miu's waist.
Lena walked over, her stride slow and deliberate. "P'Nan, I'm looking at the frame," she said, her voice smooth but laced with a lethal edge. "The physical contact feels a bit forced for this stage of their relationship, don't you think? If Summer is still guarded, she wouldn't let a man even a senior hold her that closely. It ruins the tension we've built for the main couple."
The director considered this. "You have a point, Lena. Korn, maybe just a hand on the shoulder? Let's keep the distance. We need to respect the 'Slow Burn' the fans love."
Korn smiled easily, stepping back but keeping his eyes on Miu. "Of course. Whatever is best for the story. My apologies, P'Lena."
The "P'" he used for Lena was respectful, but the look he gave her was a challenge. He saw exactly what was happening. But Miu saw it too. She saw the way Lena was shielding her, not from a scandal this time, but from another person's touch. The "senior" was struggling. The "shield" was jealous.
And to Miu's surprise, she liked it.
Later, during a break, Miu walked over to Lena, who was pretending to be engrossed in her phone. Miu was holding a small container of sliced fruit that Korn had just shared with her.
"P'Korn is very thoughtful," Miu said, her voice casual. She offered a piece of melon to Lena. "He's been giving me some really good advice on how to handle the press after the series ends."
Lena didn't look up, but her thumb froze on the screen. "He's an actor, Miu. Giving advice is just another way of keeping the spotlight on himself."
"I think he's just being a kind senior," Miu teased, leaning in just a fraction. The smell of Lena's sandalwood perfume hit her, and the playfulness vanished, replaced by the raw yearning they had been nursing. "Don't you think it's nice to have someone looking out for me, P'Lena?"
Lena finally looked up. Her eyes were dark, swirling with irritation and a hunger that made Miu's knees weak. "I think you are enjoying this a bit too much, Miu."
"Enjoying what?"
"Testing me," Lena whispered. She stood up, closing the distance until they were inches apart. "You think because you are free now, you can play with fire just to see if it burns. But remember who has been here the whole time, Miu. I know when you are trying to get a reaction out of me."
"Maybe I just wanted to see if you were still watching me," Miu challenged.
Lena's expression softened, the jealousy melting into something much more profound. She reached out, her fingers grazing the back of Miu's bare hand. "I am always watching you. I just... I didn't want to be another person demanding your attention."
"Then don't demand it," Miu said. "Just take it."
The director called them back, and Lena leaned in, her lips almost touching Miu's ear. "Tell P'Korn to keep his 'advice' to himself. You already have a senior who knows exactly what you need."
She walked away, leaving Miu standing in the shadows with a racing heart. The equilibrium was fragile, but the jealousy had proven one thing: Lena wasn't just a shield anymore. She was a woman who was finally ready to fight for what was hers.
