Chapter 23
The wrap party was held at a private villa on the outskirts of the city, a sprawling tropical estate that felt miles away from the neon grit of central Bangkok. The production had spared no expense; the pool was illuminated by floating lotus lanterns, and the gardens were draped in fairy lights that mimicked a fallen galaxy.
It was supposed to be a celebration of their triumph, a collective exhale after months of grueling labor, but for Miu, the air felt thick with a different kind of electricity. This was the final night of being Summer. When the sun rose tomorrow, the contract would be over, the scripts would be recycled, and the only thing left would be the truth she had finally admitted to herself in Lena's penthouse.
Miu arrived wearing a dress of deep emerald silk, a color that made her look older, more grounded. She felt a strange sense of composure as she moved through the crowd, accepting the congratulations of the crew and the warm embraces of the supporting cast. She looked for Lena immediately, her eyes scanning the flickering shadows of the garden.
She found her near the outdoor bar, but Lena was not alone.
Standing with Lena was a woman Miu recognized instantly from the covers of every fashion magazine in Asia.
It was P'Rin, a legendary actress from a rival agency who had recently returned from filming a project in Europe. Rin was everything Miu was not: effortlessly cool, internationally famous, and possessed of a sophisticated beauty that seemed to make the very air around her vibrate. They were leaning close together, Rin's hand resting casually on Lena's forearm as they laughed at a private joke.
The view hit Miu like a physical blow to the stomach. It was a cold, sharp spike of jealousy that she hadn't expected. For weeks, she had been the one Lena protected, the one Lena watched with possessive eyes. To see Lena looking at Rin with such easy, familiar affection felt like a door being slammed in her face. It was a reminder that Lena had a whole world, a whole history, that Miu was not a part of.
"Nong Miu! You look stunning," P'Nan, the director, said, appearing at her side with a tray of signature cocktails. She handed Miu a glass filled with a dark, amber liquid. "Drink up. You earned it. You gave me the best performance of my career."
Miu took the glass and drained half of it in one go. The alcohol was strong, a sharp burn of bourbon and ginger that made her throat sting and her head swim. "Thank you, P'Nan. It was all because of your guidance."
"And your partner," Nan added, gesturing toward Lena and Rin. "Look at them. Two icons. They have been friends since they were juniors. It's good to see Lena finally relaxing."
Miu watched as Rin leaned in and whispered something into Lena's ear, making Lena tilt her head back and laugh, a genuine, unscripted sound that made Miu's chest ache. The bourbon was already starting to work, blurring the edges of her self-control.
She felt a reckless, hot anger bubbling up. She had stood up to Korn, she had ended her relationship, and she had bared her soul in a penthouse at dawn. She wasn't going to go back to being the "junior" who watched from the sidelines.
She finished the first drink and reached for another as a waiter passed by.
"Careful, Miu," a voice said beside her. It was Korn, looking polished and entirely too smug. He had seemingly forgiven her for standing him up, or perhaps he was just waiting for a new opening. "That stuff is a lot stronger than it tastes. You don't want to end the night in a scandal."
"I don't care about scandals today, P'Korn," Miu said, her voice sounding a bit too loud in her own ears. She took a large gulp of the second drink. "The series is over. I'm just a person now."
"A person who is staring very hard at P'Rin," Korn noted, his eyes following hers. "She is magnificent, isn't she? There were rumors years ago that she and Lena were... well, you know how the industry is. Everyone is a soulmate until the contract ends."
The words were like poison. Miu felt the world tilt. The combination of the heat, the exhaustion, and the alcohol was creating a dangerous cocktail of its own. She didn't want to hear about rumors. She didn't want to hear about "soulmates." She wanted Lena to look at her. Just her.
She walked away from Korn, her steps slightly unsteady. She didn't head toward Lena; she headed toward the far end of the garden, where a stone path led to a secluded gazebo overlooking a dark, mirror-like pond. She needed a moment of silence, but the silence only made the yearning louder. Her head was spinning, the fairy lights turning into long, dizzying streaks of gold.
She sat on the stone bench, the cool air doing nothing to soothe the fire in her blood. She felt a deep, pulsing sense of unfairness. Why did it have to be so hard? Why did they have to speak in codes and hide behind scripts?
"Miu?"
She turned her head slowly. Lena was standing at the entrance of the gazebo, the light from the villa silhouetting her tall, elegant frame. She looked worried, her brow furrowed in the way it always was when she was truly concerned.
"P'Nan said you were drinking," Lena said, walking toward her. She smelled of the night air and that eternal sandalwood. "And Korn said you were looking for a fight. What are you doing out here in the dark?"
"Go back to your friend," Miu said, her voice thick and slurred. She tried to stand up, but the world lurched, and she had to grab the stone railing for support. "Go back to P'Rin. She's an icon, right? She's your equal. I'm just the junior you have to protect."
Lena stopped, a look of realization crossing her face. A small, sad smile touched her lips. "Are you jealous of Rin, Miu? She is like a sister to me. She was the only person who stayed by me when I first started. There is nothing there."
"There is everything there!" Miu cried, the alcohol finally stripping away the last of her filters. She stepped toward Lena, her eyes burning with tears. "She knows you. She knows your history. She can stand next to you in public and no one asks questions. I have to hide in your penthouse and pretend I'm just a co-star. I'm tired of being a secret, Lena. I'm tired of being the one you shield instead of the one you love."
Lena went very still. The "stinging awkwardness" that had defined their relationship for years finally reached a breaking point. The air between them was no longer filled with unspoken words; it was filled with the roar of them.
"You think I want you to be a secret?" Lena asked, her voice low and fierce. She closed the distance between them in two long strides, grabbing Miu's shoulders. "You think I enjoy watching men like Korn and Tan think they have a right to you? Every time I see someone touch you, I want to burn this whole industry to the ground. But I don't, because I don't want to be the reason you lose everything you worked for."
"I don't care about everything else!" Miu sobbed, reaching out and clutching the front of Lena's silk shirt. The fabric was cool, but Lena's heart was hammering against Miu's knuckles. "I just want you. I want to be able to hold your hand without looking for a camera. I want to tell the world that I'm not Summer, and I'm not 'Nong Miu.' I'm yours."
Lena's grip on Miu's shoulders tightened. For a long, breathless second, the only sound was the distant music of the party and the rhythmic chirping of the cicadas in the trees. The boundaries they had painfully tried not to ruin were crumbling, the "Safe Zone" finally being invaded by the truth.
"Say it again," Lena whispered, her face inches from Miu's.
"I'm yours," Miu repeated, her voice a broken, desperate vow. "I've been yours since the first day. Please, Lena. No more scripts."
Lena didn't wait for another word. She leaned in and captured Miu's lips in a kiss that was a thousand days of yearning made manifest. It wasn't a "screen kiss" it wasn't gentle or carefully angled for the light. It was hungry, desperate, and raw. It tasted of bourbon, tears, and a relief so profound it felt like dying and being born at the same time.
Miu melted into her, her hands sliding up to tangle in Lena's hair, pulling her closer as if she could merge their very souls. The alcohol in her system made everything feel heightened, a sensory explosion that drowned out the rest of the world. The stinging awkwardness was gone, replaced by a heat that threatened to consume them both.
When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other in the shadows of the gazebo. The villa was still there, the guests were still laughing, and the managers were still counting the profits, but for Miu and Lena, the world had fundamentally shifted.
They had crossed the line. They had set fire to the bridge.
"We can't go back now," Lena whispered, her thumb tracing the swollen line of Miu's lip.
"I never want to go back," Miu replied, her eyes clear despite the alcohol. "Let the world watch. I don't care anymore."
Lena looked at her, a look of terrifying, beautiful devotion in her eyes. "Then we do this our way. Private, but not a secret. Just us, until we're ready to tell them the story is over."
They stayed in the gazebo for a long time, held together by the gravity of their confession. As the wrap party continued in the distance, a celebration for a show that was already becoming a memory, Miu realized that the real story had only just begun. The "Safe Zone" was gone, but as she looked at Lena, she realized she didn't need a shield anymore. She had a partner.
