Chapter III

As they walked onto the train, Lena called window seat. Brandon didn't mind; they both thought we were closer to the best escape route. The pair sat down on the squishy, ugly seats. For once in their lives, they were silent.

"I was only about a mile east of you guys. Did you not search that far?" she interrupted the peace.

"We searched everywhere for in a ten mile radius for weeks. You weren't around," he revealed.

"Then where was I? And how on earth am I still alive?"

Brandon just shook his head.

Lena had so many questions, and he had so little answers. She knew it wasn't his fault. But she needed someone to blame.

"How?" she shouted, the sudden outburst causing the other passengers on the train to jump in their seats and look away. She ignored their meaningless antics and continued with the hissy fit.

"How can you not know anything?"

He shrank back like a small turtle, not knowing when her tirade would end. But he couldn't have guessed what she'd scream next.

"You are a liar. You know exactly what is going on. You just won't tell for whatever stupid reason you have!" Lena started crying angry tears, and the other train passengers must have wondered why the crazy woman wasn't in an asylum.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"What?" she asked, flabbergasted.

Until now, she hadn't realized that what had been whispered in the back of her mind and had just been shouted, by her, at her best friend, was anything remotely like the truth.

"That you think that!" he tried to cover quickly, catching that she hadn't really thought that.

"Brandon. You slipped, now you tell me," she told him, even though she was certain he should've told her at his first opportunity.

"It was a need to know. You didn't." he told me.

"Nope. Wrong answer. Try again." Lena wanted the real reason as well as what was going on, and Brandon was going to tell her.

The train stopped, waiting to exchange passengers.

"We were told you stopped liking being a double agent. That you had betrayed us. That you were our mole." he said, and looked away.

"And you believed them?"

"E-everything stopped once you disappeared. They didn't know anything new." he tried.

"You did. You did believe them."

She looked at him, eyes widening in horror.

"You still do."

His lips mouthed silent words that only he knew, but he didn't say anything to the contrary, because it was true.

She stomped off the train, the rain no longer a happy occasion. She needed to get away. She didn't understand what was going on at all. But at that moment, she didn't even want to. It was just too painful.

But then a headache came, showing her the true definition of pain. The minute Lena felt it coming, it was like she was tied to train tracks and the train was just about to hit her.

Lena never was a fainter. She hated it, and simply wouldn't do it. But she crumpled anyway, and slipped out of consciousness.
