Chapter 1

* Picture of Violet^^*

Love me or hate me, both are in my favor. If you love me, I'll always be in your heart, if you hate me I'll always be on your mind.

This is a quote by one of my all favorite writers, William Shakespeare. His tragedies strike a chord with me and although I cannot relate to them, I certainly can relate to the pain felt by the characters or just pain in general. Usually let that pain flow down my pale cheeks but only in the confines of my room.

Outside my room, to the world, I am Violet Amanda Styles, the top lawyer of a multinational law firm Santos & Adams Law Inc. Ruthless lawyer by the day, kickass boxer by night. There's a reason that they call me Bitch in Heels and I intend to maintain that reputation.

After all nobody crosses me the wrong way and is sane enough to tell the tale.

But I wasn't always like this. I was fun to be around, I smiled all the time, made jokes and got shit faced at every possible opportunity, though never did I go near any kind of drugs, nasty things those little fuckers.

I was undecided and uncertain in life, stuck between the love of literature and my passion for law, but never did let it cloud my days of being reckless and carefree.

But, I changed. I changed because of one tragedy that struck our family in the worst possible way. My parents died in a horrible car crash leaving me and my little sister orphaned. All because of one motherfucking drunk driver. That rascal is still alive and my parents are dead.

though not for long, as long as I am concerned that fucker has numbered days.

I was only 17, off to college because I had finished school early and my sister just turned two. I had gotten myself emancipated soon after my parent's death because I did not want my sister to be taken away from me.

The process had been hard for an orphan like me but with the reputation of my father being one of the top lawyers of his time, he had many efficient  and reliable friends that helped me out.

My sister, Caley, is my whole world. The only person I smile for, though only a little. She although is my sister, looks nothing like me. I mean appeaeance wose we look a lot alike, but there is just something that makes her look a lot different than me. She, on one hand is a petite brunette with rosy lips, a constant tint of crimson on her cheeks and a sparkle in her blue eyes; I on the other hand am a brunette with a petite body and an average height of 5'5'. My eyes although are the same color as my sister's look a bit different. They lack the sparkle in it.

"Honey, I'm home!" shouted a very shrill high pitched voice accompanied by a giggle.

Ah, so the devil's home from school.

"In the kitchen."I holler back.

"What's for dinner?" two tiny arms wrap around my legs from behind blowing a raspberry on my bare thigh making me almost giggle. Almost.

"Mac and cheese with double vegetable and mayo sandwich and orange juice." I say knowing this was her favorite.

"I love you, Vi! You're the best!" that brings a small smile on my face.

"So how was your visit to the park with your friend, Lee?" I ask knowing that her I wouldn't be speaking for quite sometime now.

She and Madeline her friend were very close with one another and she practically lived at Maddy's house these days, but I didn't mind because even if she stayed here she would be greeted by an empty house.

The dinner finished with Caley describing each and every second of her visit to the amusement park, every ride she sat on and every candy she had eaten. Soon I had put her to bed and walked out of her room switching of the lights and turning on the night lamp knowing that she would be shit scared otherwise.

As I walked down the hall to my room I wonder why the hell I bought a penthouse suite for just the two of us. Sure, my parents were filthy rich and after my 21st birthday I got the money, the main reason why I was able to finish college and take care of a two year old simultaneously. But what was I thinking? A penthouse?

Random thoughts cloud my mind after that mostly related to tomorrow's early meeting at work.

Ugh, God, I hate waking up early!

I go to sleep thinking about how my asshole of a boss has called me extra early tomorrow for some new important project. I swear if this new project includes him shoving his hand or dick up my skirt, neither of them will be attached to his body any longer.

Christopher Benjamin Adams may be a decent looking man but that doesn't make him any less of an asshole and he doesn't even attempt to be more discreet about his promiscuity. He changes his secretaries like a person would change his clothes and somehow manages to get out of every possible sexual harassment lawsuit charged against him. I respect him as a lawyer because he is the best out there with me next in line but I absolutely loathe him as a person.

Well, maybe loathe is bit of a strong sentiment. I just don't like the way he treats women, like they are objects, that habit of his disgusts me.

But I also realise that it is not entirely his fault, the women he is seen with maybe beautiful but they are still trashy gold-digging whores that will let him demean them.

One day if he meets a girl that knows how to say no to him, maybe he'll change his ways. Maybe.

***

It feels like as if it's not even 5 minutes since I closed my eyes then that god forsaken alarm goes off. It's shrill noise making my ears bleed early in the morning. Sure enough it's 5.30 am and I have to be in my office by 7, sharp.

After quickly hopping out of the bed, I rush to my en suite bathroom and take the shortest hot shower in the history of hot showers. I put on my work clothes which consist of a white button up, a grey pencil skirt that clings to whatever curves I have and a grey blazer to go with. I put on minimal make up and rush out of the apartment.

But before leaving I stick  a post it on the fridge informing Caley of the whereabouts of the breakfast, lunch and dinner, just in case and telling her that I may be late. She is a big girl, she'll manage.

I reach the garage to see my baby parked right in front of me in all her glory. She is a beautiful silver Aston Martin Volante Skyfall, my prized possession, the one my parents got me for my sweet sixteen. Soon as I hop in the engine purrs to life and in no time I am speeding down the busy streets of New York City.

I enter the firm's doors with one hand holding my office bag and the other my iPhone. I walk in with long strides, my five inches gray peep toe heels clicking against the spotless marble floor, not even acknowledging the various Good Morning Miss Styles that are thrown my way.

"Miss Styles wait up!" someone calls from behind me. I stop and turn around to see the busty blonde trying to catch up with me.

Not knowing who she is I continue my walk towards the elevators and get in to see a very scared and out of breathe busty blonde staring at me and yelling to wait. I give her a nasty glare which sure does shut her up.

As soon as I reach Chris's office I don't bother knocking and just barge in just like I always do. He wouldn't dare fire me or even yell at me, he's too much of a wimp for that sought of intimidating behavior.

"You better have a good reason to call me early in the morning because I am not interested in listening to your perverted thoughts at this ungodly hour, Christopher." I snap at him but come to a sudden stop as I take in his usually solitary office.

So imagine my surprise when I see that he is in fact not alone and no, before you perverted minds think nasty things, he was not with one of his bimbos.

Standing in front me was a man, a very tall and large man as a matter of fact. I couldn't see his face as his back was facing me. He could be no less than 6'4 with a well built muscular structure. His hair was a black mop and had just-fucked-someone's-brains-out look to it.

"Violet, you're in early today."Christopher chuckled nervously warily glancing between me and the mystery guy.

"Mr. Adams, it is you who insisted that I report to your office at seven in the morning, have you forgotten about that? You know very well that I do not tolerate tardiness,  not even from you. So there better has been a good reason that you have called me here!" I snapped at him, narrowing my eyes to tiny slits that surely made me look like a viper about to strike.

Christopher had the sense to gulp and look scared shit as he should be but the mystery guy on the other hand gave out a hearty humorless laugh. He was mocking me. That bastard. Who did he think he was?

"So I am finally witnessing the wrath of the infamous Ms Styles, am I?" his voice was deep and husky, seductive even. Like an addiction to my ears, an addiction I intend to stay away from. Even though it was very low, it rang out clearly in the huge office, clear as day. Even the tone he talked to me with seemed arrogant and mocking, I took an instant disliking towards the person, whoever he was.

"Who are you and what are you doing here?" I questioned the stranger's back ignoring his earlier statement.

 Infamous my ass.

If he wants to talk to me or about me , he better look me in the eye and speak.

"Chris won't you introduce us?" he turned only slightly to look at Christopher who nervously nodded his head in agreement.

What crawled up his ass and died?

"Of course." He said clearing his throat.

"I would rather you face me while having a conversation otherwise don't bother introducing yourself." I snap at him, I've had enough of this guy already.

Who does he think he is, the king of England, or something?

And then he turned around.

Oh. My. God.

The guy could be a fucking model for all I know.

His most striking and extremely attractive feature was his very prominent and extremely angular jaw line. That thing looked sharp enough to cut through rocks. I immediately imagined his slightly stubbled but strong jaw brushing against my inner thighs. His eyes, dark emeralds that almost had turned black and his hair darker than night made me feel warm and cool shivers, all at once. His complexion was somewhere between wheatish and ivory.

He had a very expensive looking and firm fitting dark navy blue suit on which flowed with his body defining each and every muscle visible to any bypasser.

There he was right in front of me, handsome as fuck, standing in the office gracing the earth with his godly presence and an arrogant smirk on his face which made it clear that he knew I was checking him out. Shit.

"Like what you see, tesoro?" he asked, his voice smug and eyes piercing. His was trying to intimidate me with his foreign language.

I scolded myself for the unholy thoughts I had for a stranger, a devilishly handsome yet disturbingly arrogant stranger, and composed myself into a semblance of nonchalance.

"Not even in the least. I have seen decomposed bodies that are more attractive than you." I said my smirk growing as shock registers on his face.

Suddenly his jaw clenches and anger replaces his smug look. His fist clenching around the rosewood desk, trying to reign in his anger. I swear I heard the table give away a little. Fuck, he's strong.

"Why am I called here Christopher?" I ask my superior before the arrogant ass opens his trap to spit out more shit.

"Yes, Violet. You see, this guy here is Lucca Santos." He said pointing towards the man who was now sitting on Chris's chair with an intimidating look on his, not that it would scare me. Suddenly something clicked.

"You are the other partner, aren't you? Santos. The one who never shows his face around. What, are we too measly to be in the presence of your grace?" I snapped sarcastically, my voice betraying nothing but sarcasm and accusation.

I kept my contempt for him at bay but I think he caught on because his expressionless façade cracked only a bit to reveal the anger.

"Yes that's him, except the your grace part." Christopher butted in awkwardly.

"Can we get to the point? This entire conversation is meaningless and an utter waste of time for me." I said to Christopher but was looking at Mr. Santos.

"Ya, you got a new project, a big one." Christopher says looking at me with a small smile.

Call it my passion for law or just a way to satiate my sadistic side, but I loved fighting cases. Not for the sake of winning, no. That was a given, I have never lost a case. Ever.

But the real thrill for me is always seeing my opponent first lose his confidence, bit by bit and then see the hope drain from his eyes, drop by drop and finally when I know that he is completely lost. I go for the jugular and kill.

Call me a sadistic bitch, but I was in love with the power and satisfaction that came when I saw someone lose a case, when I saw them lose their hope at whatever they had planned afterwards.

It was like my own personal brand of ecstasy.

"What is it? Who is my client? Please tell me it isn't again one of your sexual harassment lawsuits. I am tired of those." I asked with child like enthusiasm, excitement dripping from my voice.

Christopher gave me an irritated scowl but the slight grin on his concluded that he really wasn't that irritated with me.

"You are going to be fighting Lucca's case, I would have but I am going out of town for personal reasons tomorrow and won't be back for another four days so you will have to take the lead on it. This file here has all the case details and evidences that have been collected up until now. It's a big case and the opposition is gathering a team, you do the same. That said I suggest both of you discuss the case and you start recruiting your team. I have flight to catch."

Ugh, just what I needed four days with the arrogant asshole and a team of incompetent lawyers. Now don't get me wrong, our firm hires only the best of the lawyers but they just don't match the standards I expect them to. As arrogant and narcissist as it sounds, it's true. I have standards and these lawyers aren't worth shit.

"Okay." I said picking up the file and leaving. As I was about the leave Christopher's annoying voice stops me again.

"What no goodbye hug...or better, a kiss? I am disappointed. I thought we were more than that, Vi."

"And here I was wondering the cocky ass has not opened his trapped because he is afraid of the other no better arrogant ass. Hopes, hopes. Well a girl can dream, can't she?" I replied back turning around without missing a heartbeat. Christopher simply laughed.

"Goodbye, Christopher. But to say that I hope to see you soon would be a lie, so I'd rather not." As I turned back towards the door I thought I caught a glimpse of smile on Lucca's face, well for all I know could be my wishful thinking.

As I walked into my office, Clark, my PA was right behind me with a writing pad and a pen in hand.

"Christopher is out of town so coordinate with his new Barbie to arrange his meetings around my schedule so I can attend them and not miss mine. I have a new case in which I have to gather a team so call Madison ASAP, I need her in my team, she is one of the saner ones, maybe Jeffry too. I want my Starbucks, now. Go, shoo." I dismissed him; it was a good thing that we had a Starbucks just across the street because anyone who knows me on a personal level knows Starbucks is my guilty pleasure.

I opened my Mac to start a search on the mysterious Mr. Santos. After all I had to know my client.

***

Nothing...nothing on him except his association with this firm. Nothing at all. Either this guy is a saint, who he is not, or he is a sinner with sins so unspeakable which are better hidden. He is very dangerous man. My train of thought was cut off when Madison and Clark came in.

"One Caramel Macchiato with three espresso shots and an extra something from my side." Clark said placing the cup on my table. I gave him a skeptical look but didn't argue further. He knew almost everything about me.

"Miss Styles." Madison greeted me.

"Madison, this is the file of the current case I am working on, you and Jeffry are the only two people I can remotely trust so get on with it. I need a report of it by tomorrow. Understood?"

"Yes, Miss Styles." She said, picked up the file and practically ran out of the door.

That's why I like her; she is not a kiss ass, simply focused and work oriented.

"What's got your panties in a twist? You scared the shit out of the poor girl." Clark's amused voice brought me back from my reverie.

"Huh?"

"Oh, come on! You were practically glaring at the poor girl the whole time. I bet, a few more seconds and she would've fainted, or worse, peed herself." He couldn't hold back his snickers.

I rolled my eyes at him and got back to my research. Sometimes, he was so childish.

"Whatever."

"So, I may or may not come this Friday."Clark said out of nowhere once again distracting me from my research, again.

"Why?"I deadpanned.

I'll admit I couldn't function without this guy. He is my lifeline here at work.

"Well, Bash is planning a weekend for us where we are going to Rhode Island where he owns this amazing house-" Bash or Sebastian was Clark's boyfriend of two years and was a journalist from uptown New York. If I let him talk anymore, I am sure he will corrupt me with the gory details of what they are going to do.

Don't need it, no thank you.

"Stop right there. Don't want to hear it. Go wherever you go, but I want you back on Monday."

"Fine by me. Drink your coffee, don't forget. I'm outside in my cubicle; call me if you need anything."

Coffee was heaven but work awaited me. I pity the opposition lawyer because when I am done with him he will be fucking crying for his mamma.

Ominous didn't sound any better.
