12.
I pedaled once more on Jake's bike, this time quick, but not too racing. They would give us time to die, and then blow the town away. I thought of dad, how he'd think his life had just ended when he would open his eyes in Reality. Maybe he wasn't my dad at all, but we were sure to soon find out...
June's hands were around my waist, with her sitting right behind me on the bike. She held on firmly, hand sight over where the gun was placed in my waist band once more.
We had chosen to die on the top of a hill, a few blocks away from school. It had been a place where many people strolled in the weekends, where we did our homework together. I didn't see any people there today, though. And I was thankful.
I slowly came to a stop at the bottom of the grassy hill and we got off. I propped the bike at the base of a tall tree and I stroked it one last time. It was only a program, but still, I was thankful for it.
June interloped her hand into my mine and I grinned at her. It was as if it belonged there, next to mine.
We slowly walked up the hill.
"You bot regretting, not afraid?" I asked as we walked. She shook her head firmly. "No, none at all, Rick. I don't want to live, trapped in a world that loooks like real but is not. I want to see the Reality, no matter how much it's terrible. Plus, it shouldn't be more terrible than live fire-breathing dragons, ghosts and magic curses, huh?" "You must be an avid player of games-or a great writer," "My answer is the second one, of course. Though I did play games-when I was 4," "Har har," I said as we reached the top of the hill. I thought every 'SSC member'(well, reality guys) were all watching our scene silently like a good audience, some smirking at how good their programs they had made and the people they had forced to the VR was doing. Well, they had to watch this, in fact-that we weren't their puppets. We were also human.
"Here we are," I said. "No deviations from plans, Rick Hunter," June said, turning around to press her back to mine. We had planned this from the shack as we got on the bike-this suicide was going to be historic and completely bullshit awesome-in Virtuality and Reality. It had to be.
I liked the feeling and loved the plan as we stood back-to-back on top of the hill with virtual wind blowing at my face. I wanted to look at her face just one more time before seeing her again in the Reality. But there was no time.
"Just remember this, June-just stay alive. We're gonna meet out there for real. Isn't that exciting?" My voice cracked at the sudden sadness. I heard her chuckle. "It is. I'm gonna search immediately for you and Jake," Her reply satisfied me, and I pulled out my gun. I heard her hand slip down to her own gun, and we were tense. "See you out there," I suddenly felt a thousand emotions as they came sweeping at me. Sadness to leave a place I had known for years. Longing for Reality. Anger for the guys out there in the Raeltiy for manipulating us all. But most of all, the thought of how much I had realized, grown , and felt in the last days. I felt... love, and curiosity for once. The nightmare that had frightened me that coincidental day had led to...all this.
I realized that I had true meaning to live, and would do the same out there in Reality no matter what the conditions were.
For June. For Jake.
"Ready?" June whispered, and I nodded, straightening up and aligning shoulders with hers. We both pulled the guns up to our foreheads.
"See you," June finally replied to what I had said a few minutes ago, and I could feel with a sixth sense that we had both closed our eyes.
Our fingers, together as they always would be, pressed the trigger at the same second, and...
Everything ended.
-And started.
