Chapter 5: The Future
I woke up to bright lights blurring my vision. There was a scalpel on the table next to the operating table I was lying on, and men in operating uniforms standing around me. They hadn't noticed I woke up, and I didn't want them to know. I moved slightly and felt that nothing was holding me down.
I sprang up and hit the nearest surgeon. He fell down surprised and I hit him again, causing his head to slam on the floor and he knocked out. I turned to the other two and slammed them into the wall. I took chloroform that I found on a table next to the operating table and grabbed the bottle, hitting both of them with it. They fell to the ground and I poured the chloroform on all three of them. I then quickly ran out of the room. I saw that the halls were nearly empty.
I sank down to the ground and took deep breaths of air. I was calculating how exactly I would run to the exit. In about 400ft of where I was, was the exit. But there was also two operating doors open, both filled with surgeons. One was about 25ft and the other one was probably 90ft. I cracked my neck, and looked behind me. The operating room I was in was the last one in the hall. There wouldn't be anyone able to get me from behind. Until I passed the first operating room. But hopefully they'd be too engrossed in whatever poor soul they were working on that they'd never know I passed by. Well, it was time for me to find out.
Being light on my feet, I sprinted down the hall. As I made it to the exit, a shot was fired at me. I turned to see it was Avery, frowning at me.
"Where are you going, mia cara?" he asked me. I frowned and continued to run. His footsteps were close behind mine.
"I need back up for an escapee," I heard him shout into a device that I couldn't name. I kept running down the stairs and saw that we weren't too high. If I could, I'd find a window and jump out of it. If I died, that would be better than getting turned into one of those things.
I heard more footsteps join Avery and I's, and I swallowed down my fear. One more floor, one more floor. As I got to the first floor, I knew there would be people waiting for me. They'd be bent down, and aiming. That's always how they operate. So I'd jump.
When I rounded the corner, as I had calculated, there were about ten men, aiming at me. They had one knee on the ground, and one knee in the air as if they were about to marry me. But instead of a ring in their hands, there were guns.
I quickly, using my momentum, jumped over them head first, and then rolled. They all seemed shocked so I wasted no time in running again.
50ft
40ft
30ft
I rolled and dodged as another man hiding around a corner shot at me. I jumped up again and ran.
20ft
10ft
Come on, the exit is right there!
I ran and jumped through the glass door of the exit. Glass shards went everywhere. There was no time to open the door with people on my heels. As I did, I ran again. I managed to not hurt myself. My training really came in handy.
I saw I was in the city of Seattle because of the Space Needle in the distance. My stomach dropped as I realized there was no easy way in getting home, and I was surrounded by the communist-like government.
People saw me and gasped, backing away from me like I was some monster. And I realized that us Voices were probably made out to look like horrible people. I looked behind me to see Avery running at me. I turned and continued to run.
If they caught me, I would be doomed to forget everything and everyone.
Or would I be?
Avery remembered me, and said he still was in love with me. Did that mean everyone remembered me? Mom, dad, and the other Voices that were captured? Maybe I could find them here. Hopefully the rest of the Voices escaped, including Avery's ex, Saorise.
But for right now, there was nothing I could do. So I kept running and dodging, praying for my life.
