Chapter 3: The Test
I was so grief stricken I almost didn't go to school, but after realizing there was no way I could fake to be sick, I decided to roll out of bed and get ready for school.
When I stepped off the bus and approached the front doors of the school building, I saw Winter with her iPhone, talking to her friends. including Julia. They didn't even notice me when I passed by.
I grabbed my science notebook and a pencil or two, and set off for Mr. Richard's class.
It was a long hour, I couldn't help thinking about Winter and Julia. They were probably the best of friends by now, they had probably even shared their numbers so they could text each other too.
I was distracted and couldn't think properly, which caused humiliation to myself, when Mr. Richard asked me where we were in our science books.
I stared at the page, lost among the sea of words and graphs.
My brain fizzed, trying to remember what page we were on. Once he knew I had no clue, he spoke loud enough for the whole class to hear.
"If you had been paying attention, Miss Patterson, then I'm sure you would have had no problem finding where we are." A few kids snickered. Others were either asleep or daydreaming.
Finally, lunch arrived. I was starving. I hadn't eaten anything for breakfast so, I wolfed down the cafeteria's disgusting food. I was too lazy to pack a lunch earlier that morning.
I felt lonely and empty inside, now that Julia wasn't around. It was like a gaping hole inside my heart was gnawing away at my last pieces of happiness.
The bell rang, history. I remembered what Julia had said about the weird test. I didn't care about it anymore now though, I was too upset to want to care.
Mrs. Hickory, a tall, skinny and wrinkly woman, walked around passing out papers with a smile on her face. Her chain glasses dangled from her neck.
"Today, you will all be taking a test, do your best and I will grade the papers carefully, this test is very important. I will give it back to you tomorrow, after it is graded."
Everyone groaned, I didn't complain. Finally, their was something to distract me from thinking about Winter and Julia.
I picked up my pencil, and wrote my name and the date across the top of the page, along with my hour.
Question one was difficult to understand, not that it was a question about the Greeks I was totally unprepared for, it was just.........quite odd.
1. Face to face with a cyclops, what do u do?
A. Run away.
B. Shoot an arrow into its eye.
C. Run between its legs.
D. Faint in horror.
What kind of a question is that? And what does it have anything to do with history?
I had no idea what to do, so I picked the most obvious answer:
B. Shoot an arrow into its eye.
Next question.
2. In a battle with a warthog, what weapon would you choose?
A. Potion: effect: knocks into sleep
B. Sword:effects: wounds and possibly kills with the right technique.
C. Magic: effects; any spell could effect the animal.
D. Any of the above.
This one took me some time, but I figured it out.
I knew a potion wouldn't work, because the potion would only make the pig fall into sleep and it wouldn't kill it.
A sword may work, but the effects said I had to use the right technique. I didn't know how to hold a sword, let alone use one.
Magic would work, but, it depends on what kind of spell I used.
D was definitely the wrong answer, because I knew letter A was wrong.
So, that left me with letters, B and C.
I went with B. Next question.
3. Which plant cures the disease Balwark?
A. Moonstem
B. Water hemlock
C. Poison ivy
D. Sunspeck
I had absolutely no idea. I did know poison ivy and water hemlock were not the answer. Both were poisonous.
So, I took a guess and went with Moonstem.
Question four, I was beginning to think something was wrong with my test.
4. You are surrounded by a ring of fire and have to escape using, a candy bar, a magic wand, and a sack carrying your most prized possession. *write your answer below*
I had just enough imagination to figure this one out. I wrote on the lines given below the question.
I would enchant a magic spell on the candy bar and eat it. Then, I'd sprout wings and fly out of the ring of
fire, with the sack of my most prized possession.
I took a short break from my test to look around the room. A lot of different students were looking like they had given up. Some were whispering with their friends and everyone else was at the teachers desk to ask a few questions about the test.
True. We hadn't learned any of this at all this year. Why would Mrs. Hickory give us a test like this?
Maybe it's a brain worksheet to get us to take a break for all the hard work we've done this year?
But, all of the brain worksheets teachers give out are usually something like puzzles, mazes or connect the dots.
I checked the time and realized I had a few minutes left to get my test done.
Better finish.
5. True or false? Swords are easier to control than guns?
A. True
B. False
Swords? Guns?
I thought about holding a gun in my hands. All I had to do to kill someone or something was pull back a trigger. It must take a lot of skill and practice to use a sword. Just like practicing a sport.
I chose B. False
Last question.
6. Would you leave your family forever in case of an emergency to save mankind?
(Circle one)
Yes or no
I thought about this for the rest of the hour. Would I leave everyone I loved? For how long? What if I failed and they died anyways? Or I succeeded, but I still couldn't see them?
I started to sweat and grind my teeth in frustration. By this time, everyone in my class was done.
Which one? Which one?
Your probably thinking: what's the big deal? Just pick one! It's just a brain break paper right?
But, this seemed real, this seemed like something was telling me this was life changing.
RINGGGGGG
THE BELL!!! I scrambled to get all my stuff together, MY TEST! I turned back to my desk and circled yes. Then, ran out the door to my next class.
