Chapter 5: Life Changing
Monday, the day for groaning, the day for moaning, the day every one was in a bad mood.
The moment I stepped off my bus and onto school grounds I thought, somethings different about today. I could smell it in the air.
I walked through the doors of the school and their they were, just as I suspected, Winter and Julia along with several other wickedly gorgeous female demons.
Just walk past them. Just walk past them.
I should have walked silently by without any of them noticing me, but one girl, one idiotic, gloss addicted, mascara monsterous girl (A friend of Winters,) pointed me out and whispered something nasty.
I felt all their eyes on me. All of them. It was too much. I began to run, which caused more giggles. Winter called after me,
"Trying to catch your imaginary friends?" A burst of screaming giggles and laughs exploded through the hallway.
It felt like a dream. A very very bad dream. The kind of dream that ended horribly. Where you discovered you weren't wearing anything in school.
Finally, after what seemed like ages, I made it to my locker. Unpacking everything. I didn't even pay attention to what I was throwing in my locker, I just wanted to get to Mr. Richards class.
Once I was there, I tried not to cry, but I couldn't help shedding a tear or two.
Lunch was terrible. As always. No one to sit next to and no one to talk to. The day dragged on endlessly, every Monday took at least four years to get through.
History class. Mrs. Hickory didn't even mention the test I took Friday. After learning about Ancient Greek gods and goddesses, the bell rang again, and everyone started to pack up for the next class.
"Levine, wait, I want to talk to you for just a little bit." Mrs. Hickory said.
A few kids looked at me and knew I had gotten a good grade on something. Everyone knows history is my best subject.
I left my stuff at my desk and walked towards Mrs. Hickory's desk. She would probably give me a pass so I wouldn't be tardy for my next class.
Mrs. Hickory was a tall, wrinkly, skinny and bony old lady who looked like she knew everything.
"You, Levine Patterson, have the highest grades on the team. That's some accomplishment." She eyed me like I was her blue ribbon winning tomato.
I nodded and looked bashful. I was usually the favorite in all my elementary classes.
"But, what really surprised me, was your score on the test we took last Friday."
My eyes popped and I stared at Mrs. Hickory.
"That was for a grade?" I gasped.
That test was too wacko I couldn't believe she would grade it. Maybe Mrs. Hickory was getting too old to be a teacher?
"Yes, Levine I told you that before you took the test. You got the highest score. I'm very proud. All my other students, hardly even tried." She snorted. "You did get one question wrong. It was the question with the healing plants, it was Sunspeck. Not Moonstem. Oh no, Moonstem is very deadly."
"But, I've never heard of-" before I could finish, There was a loud knock and kids were yelling and laughing outside.
Mrs. Hickory's sixth hour kids were lining up at the door and goofing off. But, Mrs. Hickory didn't even take a glance at her door. She was too busy gazing apon me.
Suddenly, her eyelashes fluttered and the desks and walls started to shake. My legs had trouble standing, but Mrs. Hickory looked perfectly still.
She snapped her fingers and everything stopped and I mean everything, everything just....... Stopped.
The yelling and screaming had silenced like a light being flicked on or off. A robin with a fat chest outside the window was perfectly still, only, it was flying. No. It was floating in the air. The worm in its beak didn't move a muscle.
A fly that was buzzing around my teachers apple, had stilled and was floating in the air too.
Mrs. Hickory hadn't noticed any of this. She just sighed happily.
"Finally, some peace and quiet." Then, just like everything had stopped, everything swirled and spun.
I was being tossed around the room like some ball. Stars spun around my head and I was feeling very dizzy.
The room stretched and began to disappear. Mrs. Hickory and I, were flung out of the school and were shot across the world, all the way into space.
Above the stars, over planets. I saw things indescribable and unimaginable.
Everything was so confusing. I closed my eyes. This is a dream. Definitely a dream. I felt cool, wet grass under my hands. I had curled myself into a ball without realizing it.
"Levine!" I was being shaken now, by someone screaming my name.
"What?" I raised my head and stared into the eyes of Mrs. Hickory.
"We're here darling."
Levine looked around. They were in a large field with treeless hills that stretched as far as she could see.
"Uh, where exactly?"
Mrs.Hickory's eyes twinkled with amusement.
"Levine, dear, there are four realms. Well, five but the fifth is very small and no ones established any particular name."
This was wrong. I was dreaming. None of this was real. She took my hand and helped me stand.
"Now first, let me get out of this old body."
"What?!" My eyes nearly popped! Did she say what I think she said?
Suddenly, Mrs. Hickory took a wand from under her arm and touched the tip of her nose.
"Ximenose!" She barked.
Mrs. Hickory's body was forming into something with large feathers and long long legs. Her nose turned into a beak and the tip of her wand was no longer in her hand. It was floating over her head!
My history teacher was an ostrich. I nearly fainted. This is a dream. It's definitely a dream. Yes, I'm home right now. Lying in bed. Waiting for my alarm to awaken me.
Mrs. Hickory now had large grey feathers and her chain glasses were still dangling from her long, skinny, pink neck.
She must have seen me about to collapse, because she reached forward with her wings and caught me before I could fall.
"Ah, this is much better, my true form was always more attractive than my human form."
I didn't find this very true. In fact, I did not think my teacher looked attractive at all, no matter which form she was in.
"Could you maybe, um-" I tried to be polite about it, but it kinda came out a little scary.
"TRY EXPLAINING WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON!?"
Mrs. Hickory- I mean, the ostrich, looked frazzled.
"I'm sorry dear, of course, lets walk and talk,"
I nodded and tried to clear my head. All my questions were kind of mixed and whenever I tried to figure out what was happening, I ended up in a heaping mess of confusion.
"Like I said before, there are four realms. The Spirit Realm, The Demon Realm, The Mortal Realm, and this one: Warrior Spell. I know it sounds different from the rest."
"Anyways, The Mortal Realm is the place you grew up in, the place you know and love. Warrior Spell is a magical world full of wonderful things, like creatures you've never even thought would ever be possible to come by, or foods that are unimaginable! Hot Garbles are my favorite!"
This crazy ostrich seemed to be going on and on and on!
"The Demon Realm is a place for monsters and things that are horribly rotten and evil. Everything's polluted and everywhere you look, there's fire, ash, molten lava and just death death death."
"These demons are ruled by the Demon Lord. He's the scariest creature ever to be born. It's said his face can take away your soul with just a few blinks of his gleaming silver eyes."
"His people, or monsters, are greedy and always want more treasures and land or anything that could make them wealthy. The demon lord wants more territory. He wants to concur all the realms."
This scared me. All my life I had grown up in a nice home with a good family, in a safe neighborhood. I never knew there were realms with demons and monsters!
"The Demon Lord wants to take over The Mortal Realm first, it's so weak and small. The Mortals aren't very smart either, which makes them an easy target. They don't realize there are other worlds around them! NOOO they believe in SCIENCE!"
The ostrich ruffled her feathers in disgust.
"What kind of people are they? They think Bigfoot and the Lochness monster are myths and fairy tales! They are actual monsters who were sent from the demon lord to warn the mortals of WAR!"
The ostrich looked at me and suddenly looked guilty.
"Well, not that I don't like you. You Levine, are something special."
She stopped and tapped my nose with her wand. Her eyes lit up in laughter and wrinkles of age creased with delight.
"It's our job, the Warriors, Gardians, and witches/wizards to stop them. You see, they have to travel through a portal to get to Warrior Spell and make It through these lands to get to the portal that leads to the Mortal Realm."
It was my turn to speak.
"Well, that's stupid. Why don't they just take a portal straight to The Mortal Realm?"
The ostrich smiled somehow. How you can smile with a beak? I don't know, but she did.
"Dear child, they do not have access to that portal. A powerful headmaster long ago, set a spell on the Demon Realm. It took all of his power, he couldn't use magic for the rest of his life because he had used to much of it. He had even grown pale and nearly died after he cast it. The spell closed the portal to The Mortal Realm and only Warrior Spell has access to your realm."
I interrupted her again.
"So,let me get this straight,"
The ostrich stopped to look at me.
"Warrior Spell has the only Mortal portal right?"
"Yes,"
"So, the demons have to travel through Warrior Spell to get to the Mortal Realm?"
"Right again,"
"And the Warrior Spell people, whoever they are, have to stop them?"
The ostrich nodded.
"Don't worry, if you choose to stay here, everything will make sense."
I wanted to believe her, and what makes her think I'd choose to stay in an entirely different realm I just learned of a minute ago?
"So, where are you taking me? Are you gonna force me to fight monsters? This is because I circled yes on my test wasn't it? OH NO! Now I'll have to leave my family!" I started to cry and seriously freak out.
What if I never. EVER. Got to see Arthur again? Or my parents?
"Calm down! Everything is going to be fine. And realms no! I would NEVER force a young, innocent child to fight a monster with no training whatsoever." The ostrich squawked.
I instantly felt better. But, did that mean I was going to get to see my family again? Poor Arthur would be all alone and wonder where I had disappeared to.
My parents would call the police but they'd never be able to find me. It was just like what my ostrich teacher said: "Mortals aren't very smart, which makes them an easy target."
The ostrich saw me moping.
"Do not worry, you'll see your family again and choose to stay or leave Warrior Spell. I'll be taking you to a school of magic and power. Where kids just like you, train to help stop the demons from entering the Mortal Realm."
"One professor from every class of the Diamond Academy, has entered the Mortal Realm to gather students for another year of school. A few professors go to a different school each year in a different state, and disguise themselves as teachers. They give students a test, the same test I have your class, and whoever passes comes back to Warrior Spell, to discover the realm."
"Wow" I whispered.
We were climbing up a steep, grassy hill now. It had obviously rained in the night, the cool grass brushed up against my ankles, they grew wet and grass gathered around the soles of my shoes.
"I'm professor Flacks, a teacher of detention, I'm sure I won't ever catch you in my room, your such a perfect student." She patted my head with her wing and a few stray feathers caught in my hair.
So, professor Flacks was her name.
"Are all the professors um, animals?"
I was scared to ask but my curiosity won over my fear.
She didn't look very offended, she just laughed a high-pitched squabble.
"No, most are humans, I'm a creature of Warrior Spell. My kind live in grasslands in tall huts made of straw and leaves. We're a village. My goodness! I saw a documentary on my magic box in the Mortal Realm once, and wow! Never have I ever thought a creature like me would be so unintelligent! In the movie, my kind were behaving like animals!"
I laughed. Professor Flacks had called a tv a magic box, and I thought it was strange there were ostriches that grew up in villages and made huts.
We were approaching something tall that stretched sky-ward as far as I could see. When we grew closer I realized it was a fence. A giant wire barbed fence that ran into the clouds.
A sign above a giant electric gate read: Entrance to Warrior Spell.
