Chapter 20

Snowflight's POV

I opened my eyes to find myself in a beautiful forest.

At first, I was overwhelmed with confusion, wondering why in the name of StarClan I hadn't slept in the medicine den last night. Had I taken a walk out in ThunderClan territory and fallen asleep?

But, it didn't take me long at all to realize that this definitely wasn't the ThunderClan forest. In fact, I gasped as I began to process my surroundings. It was almost as if everything around me was glowing - the grass, the trees, and even a little stream that flowed in the center of my vision.

Oh my StarClan, It's so beautiful! I thought as I continued to look around, my eyes trying to flit over everything from where I sat.

I decided to stand up and look around some more, and even though I hadn't completely come to terms with it yet, I had already realized where I had woken up.

I'm... I'm in StarClan, I thought, letting out a sigh. I was filled with so many different emotions at once as this thought came to me. I didn't even know how to take it all in. Ashfur killed me... What will the Clan think? Or my family?

I sank to the ground again and began to whimper. My whole life was gone! All because Ashfur's strength was too much for me. I had gotten a full warrior's training as an apprentice before I became the medicine cat apprentice, but Ashfur's experience and size had basically thrown that all away. And hence why I was where I was.

Oh, Goldenshine, Lilypetal, Thornclaw... and Jayfeather... I'm sorry that I had to leave you all so soon. My heart suddenly felt physically broken. I never would get to see my parents again. I would never get to talk and gossip with my sister again...

And Jayfeather... only StarClan knows what would've happened with us going forward, but nevertheless, never getting to be with him again was heart-wrenching. Not only did I love him, but he was my mentor who taught me so much...

I let out another shaky sigh, almost as if to try to release my grief. Oh, StarClan...

After what seemed like moons of me being overwhelmed with sadness, I flinched and let out a startled yelp as I felt a tail set itself on my shoulder.

"It's alright, Snowflight," a soft voice whispered to me.

I quickly opened my eyes, lifting up my head. "Who's there?" I asked urgently, beginning to shake slightly.

"It's alright," the sweet voice repeated. "Get up." I then felt a nose lightly nudge my shoulder.

I stood up slowly and turned around to see a beautiful tortoiseshell she-cat. She struck me with a strange feeling, but I was sure that I had never seen her before. All I knew was that I was comforted by her calm demeanor and her warm gaze.

I tried to return the warm gaze as I took a step closer to the she-cat. "Who are you?" I asked, my voice shaking slightly.

The she-cat took a step closer to me, and her sweet scent flooded through my nose.

"I am Spottedleaf," the mysterious cat meowed. "I was ThunderClan's medicine cat long before you came along."

I nodded, my eyes glowing with fascination as the tortoiseshell answered. Hm, Spottedleaf...

I had heard of Spottedleaf when I was very young, and had been been a brilliant medicine cat. She had been killed by one of ShadowClan's fiercest cats, Clawface. She had been far too young when she was killed. Like me, I suppose, I realized, trying to push down grief once again.

So, I decided to focus on the cat that was in front of me. "Why are you here, Spottedleaf?" I asked her, beginning to calm down more and more even at just the sound of her soft voice.

I tilted my head to the side as I noticed Spottedleaf's amber eyes glitter with humor for just a heartbeat.

"Well... we have come here to tell you something," she meowed, lashing her tail almost as if to beckon someone. Or rather, many someones.

And sure enough, suddenly countless cats appeared behind Spottedleaf, almost all of them looking completely unfamiliar to me. I couldn't help but gasp with alarm, overwhelmed by all of the foreign faces. "What is going on?" I asked shyly, backing away a few steps.

I sat down and tried to breath more slowly as the cat I immediately recognized as Bluestar stepped forward. I wasn't alive when she was leader, but no cat could mistake her noble presence and that blue-gray fur.

Realizing that I was facing a past leader, I took a deep breath and decided to stand up again, waiting to hear what Bluestar had to say.

"Snowflight," the former ThunderClan leader began. "We are here to tell you that your journey as a Clan cat has not yet been fulfilled."

What?!

I tilted my head to the side, suddenly overwhelmed with intrigue and more confusion.

"You were so young when Ashfur killed you," Spottedleaf continued, her eyes briefly flashing with sympathy and sadness. "You haven't fulfilled what you were meant to do as a Clan that."

You keep saying that, but I still don't understand...

I nodded slowly as I tried to process what these StarClan cats were saying to me. I already knew that I would have to listen intently and thoroughly, for StarClan's words were never completely clear, always cryptic.

The cat that I knew as Yellowfang almost seemed to sense my pleas for more information. "What we're saying is," Yellowfang, a previous medicine cat rasped, "We are sending you back to ThunderClan."

No way! I couldn't help but gasp at the former medicine cat's words as my eyes widened in disbelief. "Send me back to ThunderClan? Send me back to ThunderClan?" I repeated, completely baffled.

"Yes, Snowflight. But, we are not sending you as the cat you are now," Bluestar meowed, padding up to stand next to Spottedleaf. "We are going to reincarnate you."

I felt a shiver run down my spine at that word, reincarnate, having a hard time processing the fact that this word was being paired up with me. It was so strange, thinking that I was almost being given another chance, a whole new life ahead of me. But would I know that? Would I remember anything from my past life, and the fact that Goldenshine was my sister, or that Lilypetal and Thornclaw were my parents.

Actually, I found myself very excited to find out. I wondered what this next life would bring to me, what it would be like. So, I nodded eagerly, and lashed my tail back and forth. "Reincarnate me..." I repeated out loud. "H-How will it work?"

"We are going to send you back as a young kit, lost in the forest," Bluestar explained. "ThunderClan will find you and take you in."

"Can you be sure?" I asked nervously. I wouldn't want to be in any other Clan!

"That is where you are meant to be," Spottedleaf meowed, dipping her head. "So, yes."

"Wow," I breathed. I'm going back to ThunderClan... I'm not going to be returning to StarClan for a long time, aren't I? I then began to delve into possible reasons why this was happening to me - why my destiny hadn't been fulfilled, and why all of these StarClan cats believed that it should happen.

But, whatever it was, I trusted them, and was going to comply with their wishes. I then sighed, bowing my head and nodding to the many cats before. "I accept your request," I meowed clearly.

It was after I lifted my head up that I suddenly realized something. My heart suddenly felt like it was going to burst out of my chest as it welled up with nervous and began to beat faster.

"Wait a moment," I began nervously. "Will I be able to become a medicine cat again?" Oh, how I wish that I could be back in that medicine den right now...

My heart sank a little as I watched Spottedleaf shake her head. "That cannot be determined now," the she-cat answered. "Your fate will be chosen once you are grown. All you should know, is that you have a new destiny ahead of you, and we trust that you will fulfill it."

And I will.

Bluestar padded up to me and met my widened gaze. "Are you ready?" she asked.

I found myself hesitating at the ThunderClan leader's question. As I began to come to terms with what was going to happen to me, it made me realize - what if I don't recognize the relationships that I had from my life as Snowflight? What if I am found as this kit, and they had no idea that it was me? I must say goodbye if I am able to...

Suddenly feeling a twinge of panic, I shook my head shyly, not realizing it might upset the previous ThunderClan leader. So, I made sure to explain myself as soon as possible. "Can I make a few visits first?" I asked Bluestar quietly, my eyes filled with hope and eagerness.

At first Bluestar sighed with exasperation, but after a few heartbeats, the blue-gray she-cat finally nodded, her blue eyes gleaming with understanding.

"As you wish."
