Chapter Nine

Rain overtook the wandering pair, the gruff stony ground underpaw was ragged and riddled with dead grass, the tree roots from the forest behind them sprawled across the rock and riddled into holes to reach nutrients. The clouds overhead were shades of dark grey and faded blue, swirling and twisting and racing across the sky until all you saw was the vacant, monotone, storm riddled landscape. It was as if one was colorblind, suddenly no ferns existed, only the near peaks and ravine. Simply the colorless spillage of water descending down the face of the sheer mountain, snow capping the very top in areas, and shrubs dotting its slope. Caves and indents shadowed and shimmied their way across the summit as well, until everything was now taken over by the blank, emotionless, weather riddled lack of plant nature.
In the midst of this haze, Sparrow and Locustkit struggled forwards, the white furred cat had grown more lithe and thinned since her departure from IvyClan, now she sheltered in wake of her new companion, who took the heavy water droplets full force. Despite slight shelter, her fur was quite matted in rain and the lack of time to groom since the quest began. She had insisted they not keep going in the rain, and instead find a tree trunk to hide under or a cave to pass the rapidly approaching dark clouds; of course, with only strong and profuse tail gestures and senseless yowling, there wasn't much argument to have. Now, they followed the wolf's desire, to keep going, he was still paranoid about the new omen, believing this fall of great proportions was the thing to cause the flood, and that going forward was the best solution. Some of this could be interpreted in a gaze, but the two were distant, sworn separate by both species, gender and language.
There was nothing to speak of, for neither could speak in a way for the other to understand, neither could rest, the apprehension and the instinctive tug in their bellies led them further, each edging the other farther until neither could continue. It was odd, Locustkit could not imagine a fantasy of her being an apprentice, it had been two days only since that horrible occurrence, two days since she accepted anyone connected to her life was slaughtered. Now, the only connection that remained was the fierce ambition to rebirth IvyClan new and the odd symbiosis she and Sparrow owned.
The dusty but smaller than average wolf could do nothing either but struggle on across the coarse, barren ground with a companion trailing under him for shelter from the rain, for many moments he couldn't tell she was there, and trusted nothing swept her away. It had been moons since he was reminded of the tragedy in his former summit home, where more than half of his Pack then became ancestors rather than friends and partners. Including Falcon, the bouncy, odd brained little pup who was chosen to give them words of mysterious advice that did more confuse him and provide an excuse for his continual walking than really help. Now, he was plunged into the heart of the storm in hopes to distract himself from the sorrows of his past, and keep him focused on the present and future. He didn't just have his own destiny to protect, but a tiny Little-Claw's as well.
That was when they reached a gorge, he stopped in time, having planned ahead after realizing its existence, but he to swat his wide paw in front of the still advancing Locustkit to stop her from continuing and possibly slipping. Imagination only portrayed events worse when he tried replaying them. She squealed in indignation but fell silent upon realizing of the ground level, gaping hole with tumbling water below's existence. If there was a river, there was a source, and the chances were it wasn't the waterfall. Sparrow was pretty sure he'd seen the cascade in the other direction before the foggy, wet, cold weather pierced through like a fang strike.  To acknowledge this to the white furred, measly framed little-claw, he pointed his muzzle in such direction, attempting to ignore how her flattened pelt made obvious her lack of food recently.
"Keep on going" he yapped quietly to himself, the whistling winds now drowning out all other noises, it might be impossible to track the waterfall now, and they were in the middle of a flat area, the worse place to be in a case of flooding. They just hadn't gone fast enough! Sparrow flattened his ears with determination, nudging Locustkit forwards, fast, she broke into a run ahead as he galloped evenly behind her, careful to to leave or overtake the now leading creature. This would be a long day.
The white furred kit narrowed her eyes, recently, she assumed it was from the loud doglike noises wolves made that caused ones ears to ring, she'd had hearing issues, each time she heard Sparrow mutter or make any noise in particular it seemed fairly muted, same going for the rain mercilessly pounding down atop everything. On a normal day for her, it would make her feel like elders were having a shrieking chorus, but now, it was oddly faded as if a simply background noise in camp, when the crickets called or the birds chirped far away. She didn't let it bother her too much, because who needed noise anyway when you lived with a predator that didn't speak your own ways? For now at least, it wouldn't pose a problem; and no one exactly had a medicine cat anymore. Thank his pack for that.
