Chapter five
It had been moons since Fallenfeather found out she was expecting kits, they were almost due and Fallenfeather had moved into the nursery with her sister. Green-leaf had settled over the forest filling it with fresh prey, the sun was just above the horizon when Fallenfeather awoke. Glancing over at her kin she sat up to wash herself, a thought had nagged at the back of her mind all night. She wanted to make sure her kits were safe, she knew the clan would try their hardest to keep them safe but if Fallenfeather left to live with two-legs they would be far safer than the wild. The only thing that kept her in the clan was the fact that her sister lived in it plus the fact Shadowstep would probably be upset, giving a sigh Fallenfeather padded out of the nursery to grab something to eat. Grabbing a mouse from the fresh-kill pile Fallenfeather went to sit beside the nursery, rustling from the warriors den made her look up to see Flamewing padding out towards her.
"Hey Fallenfeather, you feeling ok? You look a bit distant," Flamewing whispered nudging her, Flamewing had been so helpful to her the past few moons. Fallenfeather sighed and sat up, she couldn't wait any longer her decision was made.
"Flamewing I'm leaving the clan, I'm going to live with the two-legs and have my kits in the safety of their dens, I know that everyone will hate me but I don't want my kits to be born to starve in leaf-bare, Shadowstep can hate me too but I'm not changing my mind, tell the clan for me," Fallenfeather explained almost sobbing, Flamewing looked shocked but he just pressed his muzzle to her cheek.
"I respect your decision, don't worry I will tell the clan for you, but best leave now before the clan stops you," Flamewing meowed with a flat tone, Fallenfeather padded away her head low but she lifted it as she left the camp. There were clouds starting to gather in the sky by the time Fallenfeather reached the border, she decided to go to her favourite two-legs place. When she was a kit she had been stolen and almost killed by some dogs but was saved by the two-leg, every time she had the chance she visited him. Now with her belly round with kits she began to head there, his scent was fresh in the garden which meant he had done his morning walk. Leaping over the fence Fallenfeather sat down at the entrance to his den, giving a sigh Fallenfeather began to paw the door and meow. It didn't take long before he opened the door, a smile went across his face when he saw his favourite kitten. Fallenfeather brushes up against his legs purring, he let her in and closed the door softly behind them. She had never seen his den like this before, he fetched what smelt like a bird from the frozen tree. It had been plucked to the skin and it smelt amazing with its flesh slightly burnt, she took a nervous nibble before digging in. Once finished what she could eat the two-leg took the half eaten bird and put it back in the frozen tree, Fallenfeather leapt up onto one of the two-legs nests and curled up there. He sat down beside her and stroked her gentle, she could tell he was trying to feel for kittens and by the smile he was giving her he could feel them stirring. A claw of regret grabbed her heart but she ignored it, this was for her kits safety and her own. The sun rose further in the sky when her two-leg left to do something, Fallenfeather decided to explore her new home. The den was massive, there were some sort of climbing things that led up like a tree. Those led to more dens, Fallenfeather was fascinated. Never had she seen a den hold more dens, only ever nests. All in all the den was massive, plenty of room for her kits to grow instead of a small cramped camp. After exploring the entire den she heard the door close so she went down the slope to greet her housefolk, he greeted her with pats and she greeted him with purring. He had brought home some strange things, he had brought her a nest of her own, two dishes for her food and water, something like a tree to scratch and some food for later. Fallenfeather sniffed her new things carefully, they all had strange smells but she nuzzled her housefolk in appreciation. He then went outside to water his garden and Fallenfeather sat at the door watching him do so, she was amazed that two-legs could make it rain but only in certain spots at a time. Fallenfeather spotted some eyes watching her, her fur rose along her back until the stranger left the bushes and she recognised Maplestar. Her two-leg walked back inside and kept the catflap unlocked, Fallenfeather padded towards the fence slowly.
"I see Flamewing wasn't lying," Maplestar meowed, Fallenfeather shuffled her paws uncomfortably.
"I'm sorry Maplestar but I just wanted to make sure my kits were protected from the harshness of the wild, I will tell them tales of how great the clan is, and if they want to live in the clans then that is their choice, if you will accept them that is," Fallenfeather explained, Maplestars expression looked like one of hurt and understanding.
"That is fine, if they choose clan life then I will welcome them like a clan born kit," Maplestar meowed touching her muzzle to Fallenfeathers shoulder, she then turned and leapt over the fence leaving Fallenfeather alone. Giving a sigh Fallenfeather turned and padded inside, her housefolk welcomed her with soft strokes of his paw. The sun began to set over the horizon leaving a lovely glow over the forest, Fallenfeather felt exhausted so with what energy she had left she padded over to her nest and curled up to sleep.
