Chapter 8

FoxStripe's P.O.V.

FoxStripe watched cats leaving for the gathering, TigerPaw and FernFeather watching him intensely. He listened to their hushed whispers, knowing he was being talked about. ".....Shouldn't be here.......not one of us...." The apprentice had hissed. FernFeather nodded, looking in his direction. He flicked his tail, showing that he had heard. "You know I can hear you whispering about me." He mewed. TigerPaw's eyes widened, and he strode over. "You don't belong under the trees, hunting mice. You belong on the open moor, hunting rabbits." He hissed. FoxStripe stood up, looming over the young apprentice. "You belong over there with your mentor, watching me. You don't belong in my space, bugging me and not obeying your leader." He sneered lightly. TigerPaw flinched, then after shooting FoxStripe a final glare, he stalked back over to FernFeather. The two cats whispered for a few more heartbeats. Then, FernFeather strode over. "TigerPaw has a point. You do belong out on the moor, where you were born. You don't belong under trees, your ancestors never did." She snarled. FoxStripe stood still, not affected by the insult. "My ancestors are pure ThunderClan. Don't you remember the litter of kits who were taken during a battle when we were kits?" He murmured. FernFeather's eyes widened. "FoxKit, BadgerKit, and BrackenKit. Yes, I remember that battle." She mumbled. Then her eyes brightened. "Is that why no one was affected when LeafStar announced you as those apprentices' father?" He nodded, scanning the clearing for someone he knew. "I'm going to check on the elders, give them some prey, too." He muttered. FoxStripe bounded to the fresh-kill pile, picking up a mouse and a sparrow. He slowly went to the elder's den, stopping from a loud yowl. "FoxStripe is going to kill the elders!" He spun to TigerPaw, his eyes clouded. "He is going to kill the elders!" He yowled again as the clan started to come out of their dens. "No, TigerPaw. He went to give the elders some prey!" LightPaw snarled at his littermate. He hung his head, obviously embarrassed. "Can't you see the mouse and sparrow he is carrying!" He hissed, pointing at the prey with his tail. The warriors went back to their dens, muttering sleepily to one another about TigerPaw's stupid mistake. FoxStripe turned back around, pushing his way into the den. "SnowWhisper? RainDrop?" He whispered. The 2 cats lifted their heads, looking to the warrior. "FoxStripe, you've come home?" SnowWhisper mewed. He nodded, setting down the prey. "Can you tell me about the battle when me, BadgerFang, and BrackenFur were taken?" He asked. RainDrop sat up, her eyes thoughtful.  "WindClan attacked our camp around moonhigh. Your mother was sleeping with you three curled beside her. Your father was in the medicine cat's den with a wrenched shoulder. Their warriors streamed into the hollow, attacking anyone on sight. Your mother, being the only queen, wasn't protected from the fierce warriors. A warrior named HeatherShine and her newest apprentice IcePaw attacked LilyPetal, your mother." She mewed, turning to SnowWhisper to finish the story. He sat up, letting RainDrop lay down again. "IcePaw was told to steal the kits, so she did. The small apprentice picked you three up, running off. HeatherShine killed your mother, then raced out to the battle. It ended, LeafStar loosing her first life. When WindClan left, we found LilyPetal dead in the nursery, you and your brothers missing." He told FoxStripe. "Did anyone look for us?" He asked the elder. RainDrop nodded, her eyes clouded. "Your father was on every patrol to find you three. He didn't care about his shoulder, he just wanted to find you, BadgerKit, and BrackenKit." She whispered. "Where is my father, who was he?" FoxStripe muttered. "ReedFeather was one of the most loyal warriors in the clan. He died after the final search patrol was set out, though." SnowWhipser mewed. "What happened?" He asked. "We can tell you later, let us rest for a while." RainDrop yawned. FoxStripe nodded, backing out of the den. He looked across the clearing, seeing StreamShade and his sons appear through the tunnel. OwlPaw and EaglePaw bounded over, there eyes shining. "The gathering was great! We met apprentices from every clan!" EaglePaw purred. OwlPaw stared at him with obvious anger. "You almost killed our deputy. Go back to the moor." He spat. OwlPaw stormed off, leaving him with EaglePaw.
