Chapter 1
A beam of light filled the warrior's den creating glowing dark pelts. Stormfall stood up stretching out his hind, and forelegs. He stepped over his Clanmates so he could proceed out of the den.
"Watch where you put your paws!" Pinefoot- a senior warrior hissed at him.
"Sorry," Stormfall apologized. He's always grumpy now days. I won't be surprised if he joins the elders soon, he thought.
Stormfall glanced around the clearing. Cats were stirring from their dens, kits scampered out of the nursery, and apprentices were play fighting.
"Stormfall," a tom's voice sounded behind him.
"Yes Nightclaw?" Stormfall asked his deputy.
"I want you to lead the hunting patrol at sunhigh."
"Any certain cats you want me to bring?"
"Nope."
"Alright then."
The dawn patrol arrived back at camp looking satisfied. "Any trouble with the other Clans?" the Clan deputy asked.
"None. We re-scented the borders and no other Clan cat has trespassed," Stormfall's sister Mooncloud reported.
Just before sunhigh Stormfall remembered his patrol. I haven't picked any cats yet! he panicked a bit. The tom padded around looking for which cats to bring. Then he spotted Duskheart. "Would you like to join my hunting patrol?" Stormfall asked her hoping she would reply with a "yes."
"Sure. Can Shadowpaw come with us? I'd like to get him hunting for once," Duskheart mewed.
"That'd be great," he answered flicking his tail as he padded off to find one more cat.
"Owlfur!" He called to the young warrior.
A small brown tom with wide yellow eyes walked up to him. "What is it Stormfall?"
"I want you to come on a hunting patrol with me," Stormfall told him.
"Of course I would! When do we leave?"
Stormfall looked up to the sky. "Now," he replied.
He bounded to the camp entrance with Owlfur where Duskheart and her apprentice Shadowpaw, were waiting. "Are you both ready to go?" the she-cat asked. Stormfall nodded. He padded out of camp with his Clanmates right behind.
Stormfall kept his ears pricked for the sound of prey. Greenleaf had brought plenty, so finding prey wasn't so difficult. He heard movement, about to drop into hunter's crouch, but Shadowpaw beat him to it. He watched the apprentice move lightly on his paws. His tail is in the air. Luckily we don't live in ThunderClan territory. He snorted at the thought. Touch a leaf, and your prey's gone.
"Lower your tail," Duskheart whispered. Shadowpaw obeyed, and lowered his tail just above the marshy ground. A squirrel scampered about the roots of a tree when Shadowpaw dashed for it, capturing the brown furred creature in his claws. "Well done!" Owlfur praised the apprentice. Shadowpaw dipped his head and the patrol continued on.
As the patrol was returning to camp their jaws were filled with fresh-kill. Stormfall had caught two mice and a squirrel, Duskheart was carrying a sparrow and a shrew, Owlfur got a grasp on two squirrels and two voles, while Shadowpaw had caught a frog. They dropped their prey into the pile and went off to other duties.
"A very successful hunt if I say so myself," a she-cat mewed laying next to Stormfall.
"Thanks Silverwing," he purred.
"Are you going out on any other patrols?" she asked licking the top of his head.
"Not that I know of," he mewed between swift licks to her flank.
Stormfall stood up and picked out a plump sparrow from the fresh-kill pile. "Would you like to share?" he set the lifeless animal in front of the grey cat. Silverwing dipped her head and took a bite from the black bird.
The grey tom sat next his Clanmate and started to eat.
Moonrise had fallen and Stormfall's Clanmates padded to their dens. He curled up in his nest while Silverwing laid nearby, her flank touching his. He closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
Stormfall awoke in a starry environment that led into a dark forest. "Greetings Stormfall," a deep voice mewed. He turned around to see a black she-cat with stars in her fur. "I am Shadowstar, the first leader of ShadowClan," the she-cat said. She stared into the dark forest. "Great danger is coming to the lake that will cause great destruction. You are one of the destined cats to restore what shall be lost."
Stormfall stared in astonishment. What did she mean? "But Shadowstar, I don't-"
"Evil shall kill, like leaf-bare takes prey, yet four will restore, like newleaf brings growth," Shadowstar whispered fading away.
Everything he had seen was fading away. "Wait! Tell me more please!" Stormfall cried out.
"Farewell young warrior," Shadowstar flicked her tail goodbye.
"Shadowstar!"
"Stormfall?"
The grey tom snapped out of his dream now back in his nest. "Stormfall are you alright? You were howling as if you were being attacked by a badger!" Silverwing hissed so no one else heard her. Evil shall kill, like leaf-bare takes prey, yet four will restore, like newleaf brings growth. The prophecy still rang in his head.
"I'm fine," he mewed. "It was just a chaotic dream."
"Well let's hope you don't have one again," she purred curling her tail around her small body.
Stormfall tucked his paws underneath his chest. He couldn't fall back asleep no matter how hard he tried. The ancient ShadowClan leader's word surged through his mind. Evil shall kill, like leaf-bare takes prey, yet four will restore, like newleaf brings growth. He pondered for a bit. Was he one of the four who will restore? Who were the other three? And what would they bring back? What was going to be lost?
The sky grew brighter as Stormfall stared blankly at the den entrance. I might as well go out hunting. Then I can clear my head and support the Clan.
The grey tom got to his paws and quietly padded out of the warrior's den. He scanned the camp for any sign of stirring cats, but only Paledawn sat still at the camp entrance.
Stormfall walked past his Clanmate out of camp. "Stormfall! Where are you headed to so early?" the tom called out.
"I'm going to take a quick hunt," he mewed.
Paledawn dipped his head understanding.
Stormfall raced through the pine scented territory. Why was this prophecy pestering him so much? It was getting in the way of his current life.
Kept in thought, he didn't realize the slope ahead. Letting out a hiss a shock, his paws fumbled around trying to grip at the ground, but it was no use. Stormfall's body hit the earth with a hard thud.
As the world around him went dark, the next thing he remembered was water swirling around him.
