Chapter 4
I stood with my siblings at the end of the day. Alice was explaining in a low voice to the other three what she had seen -- her torn decision between me or Edward. I crossed my arms and leaned against the silver volvo. It was easier to think of her scent out here, in the light rain. I couldn't smell it, even though it was burned into my memory. It made me feel weak, shameful. How could one measly human affect me this way? I thought I was better then that.
Sure, it was more difficult for me over my siblings because of the first century of my existence, but I was doing well and I liked to think my resolve was getting stronger. A bright color caught my eye, and I turned to see the happier twin get into a rusty red truck. She closed the door and brought her knees up to her chest, relaxing into the car.
Despite her -- now underlying -- tone of yellow, she was feeling aggravated, and I could see from here as she closed her eyes tightly. My emotions shifted as well. It bothered me, to know that she was upset or mad in a way. I began to think of what could've annoyed her -- I rolled through each period in my head after I had seen her; I had followed her emotions as I went to the next class. She couldn't feel me keeping tabs on her emotions, so there wasn't a harm in it. And she was so pure that I was almost afraid to let her out of my sight, for fear she was only a figment of my mind and she would disappear.
My frown must've caught Alice's attention, because she turned to follow my gaze. Michael, Emmett and Rose did too, and all their emotions flooded with realization when they saw who was in the car.
"Why do you keep staring at her?" hissed Rose, her voice low next to me. I sighed.
"It's her emotions," I started off, "it's just...different from other people."
Emmett became suspicious, overarching his still wounded pride and anger. "What'd you mean?"
Alice interrupted. "Explain in the car, please, Jasper, Edward wants to leave soon and he won't wait for us to get in the car before leaving."
We all got into the car silently, and Emmett turned to me first, impatient. "Well?"
"Her emotions are pure, if that makes sense," I began to explain quietly, still keeping my eyes on her. "She's very happy, and it's constant. But it's different from, say, you, for example, but I can't figure out why."
"So she's pure," Rose shrugged. "That doesn't mean much, sure they're more rare, but who cares?"
Her emotions reflected her words, and a bit more. She was bothered by the humans. They either didn't give her any attention, or too much. Her emotions shifted and rolled along with theirs, one of the reasons I tried to avoid spending time with her around humans.
Edward came storming out of the main office a moment later, moving too quickly. We all watched him, our attention taken by his dark frown and too-fast walk. He got into the front seat and slammed the door, the car sliding out of the parking spot a moment later.
His emotions were dark colors; bloodlust, self-repulsion, anger. I watched as everyone's emotions raised. Their curiosity was peaking, but so was their worry. In turn, my normal white began to teeter off too.
Edward's emotions shifted in a dark swirl, reaching out in tendrils to hit Alice, in the front seat, and me, who sat right behind him. He was breathing harshly, his voice passing his scent straight into the front windshield.
"Edward?" Asked Alice, registering the near-black mood he was deep in.
His head seemed to shake on his own. The car was swiftly thrown in reserve, and he sped out of the parking lot.
"What the hell happened to you?" Emmett demanded, distracted for a moment from me and my emotions. He was still wounded from the match last night - like I was going to let him challenge me again and win.
He hit seventy by the time he was on the road. I could feel my own emotions beginning to spiral down that path too. My hands clenched into fists, and I found myself glaring out of the window.
That stupid human. How dare she have such good smelling blood? How dare she affect me this way? It was ridiculous. I was over a hundred years old. She had no affect on -
"You're leaving?" whispered Alice, breaking me out of my revere. Edward's emotions were trailing out to the entire car - it was going to be a bloodbath soon.
I set to work, narrowing my eyes at the space between him and Alice. Slowly, carefully, I pictured the dark trails folding in on themselves, heading back towards Edward. At the same time, I pictured the rest of the car mellowing out, swaying them gently enough that if they hadn't been paying attention, it wouldn't have been there in the first place.
Alice looked into the future, her eyes suspended for one long moment. Rosalie was still put off, curled into Emmett's side as the car moved forward. He wrapped his arm tightly around her, almost losing her behind it.
"You're leaving?" Alice got flooded with surprise. Michael, as always, piqued his interest. Anything that occurred to Alice he had to know.
"Am I?" asked Edward, the same time Michael asked, "Is he?"
I turned back to what I was doing. Edward's emotions were fluctuating back and forth in accordance with whatever thoughts were racing behind them. He and Alice began on one of their conversations back and forth - excluding the rest of us. Michael was sitting behind Alice, trying to guess what was going on. His frustration echoed back to us, but it was easy to contain.
That was the reason I didn't like spending too much time around them. It was difficult. They changed their emotions just as quickly, if not more, than humans. And my presence amplified it all. It was common to see Emmett and Edward going at it - playful or not.
"Drop us here," Alice instructed. My eyes flashed to the front window. It wasn't surprising that we were already home. The driveway was just around the corner. "You should tell Carlisle yourself."
He nodded, and the car squealed to a stop.
We all got out in silence; I felt a breath of relief once I was away from his emotions. I disappeared slightly into the undergrowth, not far enough so that they would lose me but enough that my amplification would be lessened.
Once Alice joined Emmett and Rosalie, they melted into the underbrush with me. We were gone before we even heard Edward leave.
