five
jimin made himself comfortable as he relaxed against the soft mattress of his bed. the clock read one forty-six by his bedside table and all he wants to do was drift off into the blissful world of dreamland.
he hears an adorable faint chuckle echoed not far away, his lids opening half way only to lock gazes with jungkook's dark hazel ones. he was staring fondly at him, his lips curved into a small smile as his shoulder leaned against the frame of his door. to say he was beautiful was truly an understatement because at this very moment, jimin finds jungkook looking utterly gorgeous.
no homo though.
jungkook had always hated his smile. he thinks it's too girly and feminine, and that he also looks like a bunny. but personally, jimin disagrees. the younger's smile had always been his favourite asset among all of his great qualities. the way his lips curves into a grin filled with nothing but raw and genuine happiness was beautiful. he likes it.
"you should smile more often, kook." the words slipped off of his lips. "scowling makes you look old."
at this, the younger rolls his eyes playfully as he pushed himself away from the door frame, taking slow yet calculated strides closer before plopping himself on the bed just beside him. "y'know why i don't, hyung." he scoffs. "i hate it."
jimin could only chuckle at his best friend. jungkook had always been a drama queen. "hm, i like you like this." he says, his gaze directed at the ceiling above and the many messy astrology drawings he had pasted up there back when he was still a child.
through his peripheral view, he could see jungkook giving him a curious gaze. "what do you mean, hyung?" the question rolled off his tongue, confused.
at this, jimin snapped his gaze away from his ceiling and met the younger's hazel dark ones, a small smile exploring his lips. "this." he says, pointing a finger towards the other. "— happy, contented, and at peace. i like that kind of smile of yours."
"what smile, hyung?" the younger raised a brow.
"— the kind wherein your eyes smiles along with the curve of your lips. it looks pretty. it suits you well." he tells him without malice, just genuine judgement from a best friend to a best friend.
or is it? hmm
jungkook was silent for a while, probably still trying to process the compliment. the younger's round doe eyes gazed back at him like an arrow piercing through an apple. jimin just watches as the younger's brows subtly creased into a faint frown, before a low chuckle escaped his lips as he shook his head. "you think i'm pretty?" he smirks. "oh, hyung, are you by any chance in love with me?" he teased.
"no, that was me telling you look decent for once." he interjects, rolling his eyes at the younger.
"excuse you, i'm fabulous." jungkook scoffed. "— i could probably get any guy i want if i wanted to."
"hmm, not taehyung though."
"You take that back, you miniature being!" Jungkook playfully jabs his forearm, earning a chuckle from Jimin. For a while they bantered and threw insults here and there before ending up in a pillow fight to which Jimin won by the way. How? Nobody knows.
When all were calm and settled, Jimin plopped back on the bed whilst Jungkook stared down at him and seemed to be out of breath from their fight. But he was smiling and his eyes seemed to be in glee. He seemed happy and contented— the genuine kind.
"Kook-ah," Jimin finds himself reaching a hand up to him. He could see his action confused the younger, seeing as his brows frowned at his outstretched hand. "This is nice." Jungkook gave him a look but Jimin brushed it off with a chuckle.
"You're acting kinda weird today, hyung, are you ok?" The younger asks him, worry evident in his gaze as he takes slow strides closer to the bed, plopping himself down beside his best friend.
Jimin could only look up at the ceiling, his hands supporting the back of his head. "Don't you like nights like this? Not worrying about anything at all and just having a laugh with me?" he utters the words carefully, watching through his peripheral vision as the younger reaches for a pillow to rest that pretty head of his on. "I mean, it just doesn't make sense."
"What doesn't make sense, hyung?"
"This." He says, frustration evident in his voice. "You...risking everything for some guy who never even saw you for who you are. Taehyung-- the guy who did nothing but hurt you over and over again. It just doesn't make sense how you're still in love with him."
"Well, sometimes we don't get to choose who we love, hyung." He hears him whisper. "---we just do."
And at that, all Jimin could do was stare blankly up at the ceiling and swallow the lump forming in his guts, shaken as he mutters, "You're right." this time, moving his gaze away to stare at the younger. "We just do." a bittersweet smile fading subtly at the corners of his lips as he looks away and closes his eyes.
