Ruby's Excuses
Ruby, with her baggage and all of her trinkets, was stuck walking behind two people amid the crowds of New York. She wanted to excuse herself, but she was anxious to do so. She had always detested raising her voice to be heard and much preferred skirting around people in her way as much as she could.
However, in this one circumstance, the two people in front of her were rather elderly and slow movers. Walking briskly past them, at least in her eyes, would be rude. She did have the interview at the domestic service agency that required timeliness, but she could not afford time to lose.
"Excuse me," Ruby said, hoping that she would be heard. "Coming through."
The old man with his white hair smiled aand led the old woman, Ruby presumed his wife, to the side. They were dressed remarkably well, too. Ruby noticed the dress that she had been wearing, was something that she frequently made for one of the wealthier women who lived outside of Manhasset. Such lovely crinoline.
"Such polite manners in a young woman," the old man said. "I hope you have a lovely day, Miss."
"You as well, sir."
That was not so bad. At least this man was kind.
Ruby continued keeping a steady pace. The luggage was beginning to become heavy on her arms and her body begged for rest, but she needed to get to the interview as soon as possible. Time was of the essence.
Hoping that she had at least been going in the right direction, Ruby took out the sheet of paper from the telegram that she had received earlier in the week. 42 Greenwood Park Avenue. Which was apparently one street over from Greenwich Street.
But where was Greenwich Street? It felt as if she had been walking for miles, but never found it. She sighed, putting the sheet of paper back into her clutch.
She took a few more steps and paused when she found a police officer standing by a lamppost.
"Excuse me, Officer," she said. "But may you please direct me toward Greenwich Street?"
He smiled and said, "I think you're headed in the right direction. Just keep heading on this street, it is the first stop and then turn right."
"And Greenwood Park Avenue?"
"Just beyond that," he said. "Do you need anymore assistance?"
"No," she said with a shake of her head. "You have helped plenty. Thank you, Officer," she said, hanging in Officer hoping for a name.
"Franklin. Officer Thomas Franklin."
"All right, Officer Franklin. Have a blessed day."
"You as well, Miss. God bless."
She took in a deep breath and concentrated on getting herself to the interview. Ruby was glad to know that she was headed in the correct direction at least. Every step she took was one step closer. As she passed rows of dark, chocolate brown buildings, she realized how small she was compared to the massive expanse of New York.
"To the future," she whispered.
